Clip joint: the best film clips featuring bridges

3 December 2009 4:31 AM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

This week, nilpferd wants us all to link up, join together and only connect with the best film clips featuring bridges

Bridges are essential film furniture. And not just because they are large, iconic objects whose construction, capture or destruction can take up whole afternoon matinees. A dauntingly high bridge is the ideal suspense building bottleneck in an action film – and if it happens to be a hanging walkway with rotting boards and fraying twine, so much the worse for vertigo-stricken heroes and the better for us viewers.

Slow the pace down, and the bridge's function as a connector comes into focus – crossing it can bring irreversible changes, but it can also act as a facilitator of exchange and interaction. Yet beyond these functional roles, bridges possess magical qualities which make them ideal for cinema. Neither here nor quite there, they exist somewhere in-between.

Exclusive: El Mayimbe Watches Hunter Prey Plus Brand New Pics

23 November 2009 2:05 PM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Remember Sandy Collora? The guy who made that really hot short fan film called Batman: Dead End, where Batman fights the Alien then the Predator that was all the rage during Comicon 2003? The film that even Kevin Smith said was "An amazing piece of work, possibly the truest, best Batman movie ever made."If not then check it out the short by clicking Here to refresh your memory. The short was an excellent calling card and made so much noise it that got Sandy signed to Icm and soon he was being set up around town on the meeting circuit to meet with some pretty big folks at studios and production companies to pitch his other ideas. I always run into filmmakers who want to make a short film as a calling card and I always tell them that if their stuff isn't cool, high concept, or the execution isn't …

DVD releases for Tuesday October 20, 2009

20 October 2009 7:34 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Some decent DVD news today gang. Echo Bridge Home Entertainment is finally giving Logan McMillan's New Zealand made slacker zomedy, Last of the Living, (review) a release here in the Americas so check that out.

One film I've really been waiting to see on the ol' flat screen is Chris Nahon's live action Blood the Last Vampire (review). I can't explain it. It's just one of those films that, despite middling reviews, still beckons me with outrageousness.

Probably the film I'm most looking forward to having kill two of my prescious life hours though is British assassin actioner, The Tournament (review) which comes at us like a bullet from Weinstein Co.

And of course how can we forget Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead, the lastest in the decreasingly decent Wrong Turn legacy. Actually scratch that, "Dead End" wasn't bad at all. In fact, Henry Rollins totally made the film awesome. …

Check Out This Trailer for Harry Doright !

12 October 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

I dig the hell out of this. It's the official trailer for filmmaker Erwin van den Eshof's Harry Doright's Prelude to Hell Trailer . The short film was completed last year in Belgium, runs about 15 minutes and is making its Screamfest debut this month ( more details ). Here's the synopsis, but I say watch the trailer first, then give it a read. Before this Erwin van den Eshof directed and co-wrote 2006's Dead End (aka Dood Eind ). At his 60th birthday, Harry Doright and his family are acquainted to a most unwelcome guest. A demon who claims the souls of Harry and his loved ones. In order to save their souls, Harry plays a terrifying game with the guest, only to remeber his own horrible past, which he had long forgotten. Why must Harry Doright go to Hell and who of his …

The Devil Is Coming To Dollhouse – Ray Wise Joins the Cast

15 September 2009 4:23 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Fresh off his stint as Lucifer on TheCW's Reaper, Ray Wise is joining the increasingly star-studded cast of Dollhouse. According to EW's Michael Ausiello, Wise will be joining the Dollhouse cast in the role of Howard, a Dollhouse higher up with heavy duty influence.  Ausiello's piece describes him as having "intelligence and humor."

Along with Wise, Dollhouse has either added or will have as guest stars: Jamie Bamber (Battlestar Galactica), Keith Carradine (Dexter), Alexis Denisoff (Angel), and Whedon alum Summer Glau (Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles).

Wise has had some iconic genre roles in the past, perhaps most notably as freaky poppa Palmer in Twin Peaks. He's given some very memorable turns in lesser known genre pics such as Dead End, not to mention bringing his intense presence to such flicks as Robocop, and Jeepers Creepers 2. Suffice to say, Wise never crafts a wallflower – his Dollhouse character is bound to be something special. …

This Week On DVD and Blu-ray: September 15, 2009

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed X-Men Origins: Wolverine I wish DVD and Blu-ray sales were more readily available, because it will be interesting to see what kind of business this title does. Fanboys seemed to hate this film across the board, so I can't help but wonder how many of them will buy it on the down low and hide it under their bed when their friends come over. I, for one, actually didn't think it was all that bad. It was, at the very least, entertaining. This isn't to say I think you should buy it, but it works as a one-time watch. The Ultimate Force of Four

Hero / Zatoichi / Iron Monkey / The Legend of Drunken Master Buena Vista Home Entertainment sent me these and I am going to be watching all four and bring you a review hopefully by the end of the week. …

Them Crooked Vultures Unleash More Music

20 August 2009 12:17 PM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

Them Crooked Vultures, the strangely-named supergroup that brings together members of Led Zeppelin, Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age, made their live debut two short weeks ago at a Lollapalooza after-party in Chicago. They surfaced for their second show ever last night in Amsterdam and also released a teaser video that shows the trio — drummer Dave Grohl, bassist John Paul Jones and guitarist Josh Homme — messing around in a recording studio while a clip of their song "Nobody Loves Me and Neither Do I" plays over it. Though they have an album done, the band has been mysterious about when those songs might see the light of day, and they've been similarly secretive about their live shows. Rumors are swirling (via the band's official message boards) that they'll be making a few festival stops in Europe over the next couple of days. But most details remain hazy — even …

Summer Horror: Top 10 Road Trip Frights

22 July 2009 4:20 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Get your motor running and head out on some abandoned roads where your car will more than likely break down in front of an inbred ax emurderer’s shack.

As summer is in full swing and the roads heat up, our hearts yearn for adventure on the open road.  Here are our top ten films that might just make your forget about any road trip you had planned.

1.    The Hitcher (1986- original) – Labeled as gore fest featuring a brutal death every ten minutes, The Hitcher firmly established Rutger Hauer as one creepy mofo.  And what can be better than one Jennifer Jason Leigh?  Two Jennifer Jason Leighs!

2.    Joy Ride (2001) – The golden rule of any road trip: don’t piss off a truck driver.  This film did make me crave a candy cane for some reason.

3.    Jeepers Creepers 2 (2003) – A basketball team gets trapped on a bus with their cheerleaders in the middle of nowhere. …

A Proper Trailer For Thanapon Maliwan’s The Sanctuary

9 May 2009 3:42 PM, PDT | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

[Updated with new poster and much higher quality trailer.]

Thanapon Maliwan’s The Sanctuary is a film that we’ve been tracking here for a good while now.  Maliwan rose to attention as one of the directors in the Pechpanna Productions stable, the Thai action outfit where both Panna Rittikrai and Tony Jaa got their starts, Maliwan directing both Jaa and his mentor is at least one early pre-Ong Bak film together.  And then there’s star Mike B, a Thai stunt man who was one of the key stunt performers in Ong Bak who Maliwan has been grooming for stardom for a little while.

This particular project began life as Dead End before finance troubles forced it to be suspended for a while and Maliwan and Mike B went off and made inconsistent action-comedy Brave instead.  That project out of the way the materials from Dead End were reworked and redeveloped and the project re-launched as The Sanctuary

The world’s first big budget (well, $30,000) fan movie, Dead End was crafted by concept designer Sandy Collora (who worked on flicks like Jurassic Park and The Crow) who figured it could kick-start his career as a director, it’s an impressive tale of the Caped Crusader battling Aliens and a Predator.
