Lucy Kelson (Sandra Bullock) is a Harvard-educated lawyer and environmental activist in New York City. She spends her time working at the legal aid clinic and staging protests to stop the destruction of local landmarks. George Wade (Hugh Grant) is an immature, philandering billionaire real estate tycoon who relies on others to do his work. Lucy's hard work and devotion contrasts sharply with George's world weary recklessness and greed.

When Lucy confronts George in an attempt to stop him from tearing down the destruction of the Coney Island community center from her childhood, he offers her a job as his inhouse counsel. Though Lucy is wary of his playboy tendencies, he promises to protect the community center if she works for him.

Lucy soon finds that what George he really needs is advice in all aspects of his life, including choosing his ties and stationary, and he calls her 24 hours a day for every little thing. After he calls Lucy in the middle of her friend's wedding, she gets fed up with the situation and gives him her two weeks' notice of resignation. Deeply troubled, he tries to convince her to stay, and tries to block her from getting any other jobs. But he finally gives in, and Lucy begins training her replacement, the attractive and flirtatious June Carver (Alicia Witt), another young Harvard lawyer. When June begins a romantic relationship with George, and Lucy discovers that George is going to tear down the Coney Island community center after all, Lucy angrily leaves.

After she's gone, George realizes that his time with her has really changed him, and as that he needs to keep the promise he made to her in the beginning, even if it costs his company millions. Meanwhile, back at the legal aid clinic, Lucy misses him terribly. He goes in search for her and they finally confess their feelings for each other.
