Is there a more annoying character in literacy history than Bridget Jones (Renee Zellweger)? This neurotic bint spends half her life building up her relationship with her live-in lover Darcy (Colin Firth), and the rest doing all she can to destroy it. Let's face it, she ain't the most attractive girl on the planet, so you'd think she'd be happy with a top lawyer, but no.. she watching him creepily for hours in the morning while he's asleep, bombards him with phone calls and texts during the day, runs into his meetings when he's with very important people.. surely this would be enough to drive any potential mate crackers. But this is Darcy we're talking about here, somebody who could never possibly exist in real life, who brushes off his girlfriend's psychotic behaviour and carries on his dull existence as though nothing had happened. Actually, I think they go well together.. someone with no personality and the other with WAY too much. Guess which is which?

Anyhow, I watched Bridget Jones: The Edge Of Reason with a very skeptical eye, feeling that all the story had been told in the first film and nothing more needed to be said. But huge grosses don't lie, so inevitably she had to be brought back for a second time. And what a fruitless, pointless exercise this has proved to be. This is like a greatest hits compilation, a movie for people who want a repeat of the first film but don't want to see the original again.. so we get encores of the unfortunate bottom close-up live on TV incident, sexually graphic phone messages being heard by all the wrong people, the fist-fight between Darcy and her treacherous ex-beau Cleaver (Hugh Grant, not nearly in the film for long enough) and even the snowman sweaters get a second showing, as if they couldn't be bothered to think of any new jokes. The ones that they have come with range from slightly amusing (The "Jellyfish Woman") to being just plain embarrassing (Who on earth thought that a jail cell full of Thai prostitutes doing a bad cover version of Like A Virgin was funny?) A pall of desperation hangs over the proceedings, and as the picture starts to chug off to it's highly predictable conclusion, you may wish to amuse yourself by counting the amount of bad cover versions of old pop songs there is on the extremely unsubtle soundtrack (I counted four). Oh, and a little note to non-UK residents: London isn't THAT rainy!

Basically, there's not much to see here and even less to laugh at, so unless you're a fanatical lover of the books or prefer your sappy romantic comedies to have a lot more rom than com, I can't honestly recommend this. And that goes double if you're missing a Y chromosome.. 4/10
