Last night got busy in Twitter-Wood on a few fronts. Former "Remote Control" host Ken Ober's passing surprised a number of tweeters, including Brian Posehn and Jeff Katz, who both noted his loss.
L.A.'s Westwood village theatre, meanwhile, was epicenter for all of the "Twilight" Twitterverse during the "New Moon" premiere. BooBoo Stewart posted a pic from the red carpet, Rachelle Lefevre posted her reasons for missing the event, Brett Ratner was in attendance and Kevin Smith made a date out of the night with his daughter. You can check out what they had to say after the jump along with Twitter Pic pick that I selected more for its significance than its shock value, as Neil Patrick Harris officially moved into the Twitter-Wood neighborhood. It's all in the report for November 17, 2009.

When young Billy Batson says "Shazam," he transforms into the adult superhero Captain Marvel. The character is nearly as old — and as powerful — as DC Comics' premiere hero, Superman. Yet, he's had far less exposure than the Man of Steel. In fact, most people who recognize Captain Marvel think his name is actually the magic word he says to access his powers. This name confusion stems partially from the fact that DC Comics is forced to market Captain Marvel under the name Shazam! because Marvel Comics owns the rights to the name.
Captain Marvel has appeared in film serials, a live-action TV show, and several cartoon series. There's also long been talk of adapting the comic book into a live-action movie along the lines of Big meets Superman. New Line Cinema had been working on an adaptation but when it folded, the scripter of the intended adaptation, John August »

With all the hub-bub surrounding the 20th anniversary of "Say Anything," it seems a little weird to think of actor John Cusack as a potential lead for "Preacher," Sam Mendes' in-development adaptation of Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon's very adult-oriented comic book series. However, that could indeed be the one comic book movie he's chasing these days—or something very similar to it.
In an interview with io9, Cusack described a comic book movie floating around Hollywood that he's trying to get involved with—and the description sounds an awful lot like a certain story about an ex-Preacher, his trigger-happy girlfriend and a vampire who set out to teach God a lesson.
"It's a vampire and a killer, and they're on the road, and it's this really strange story," said Cusack.
Asked whether it "Preacher" he was thinking of, Cusack said, "I think it might have been 'Preacher, »

Cow films appear to be the official successor to the unseen prequels tag that was trending on Twitter earlier this week. Both Jon Favreau and Steve Agee made contributions today, while John August offered some criticism of ABC's new "V" series and Brian Lynch commemorated the 40th birthday of "Sesame Street."
In the "Twilight" neighborhood of Twitter-Wood, meanwhile, Peter Facinelli discussed an accidental oversleeping incident that resulted in a late arrival on-set. David Slade responded by thanking him for not ever being late during "Eclipse." Check out all of those tweets after the jump. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for November 4, 2009.

2009 and 2010 will see the release of two films by master visionary directors — Alice in Wonderland by Tim Burton and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus by Monty Python alum Terry Gilliam. In a world that’s full to the brim of remakes and reboots, unoriginal thought after unoriginal thought, you’d think we’d be happy to see some artistic ingenuity. And before you start: yes, I’m aware that Alice in Wonderland is in no way a “new” idea, but it’s been quite a while since it has been brought to life on screen effectively.
This got me thinking though, with the release of Alice in March and Parnassus this coming December, that here we have two directors whose stylistic flair is almost inseparable from their body of work. Each has had their share of blockbuster successes as well as flops. When they flop, they tend to flop hard. »

Big Fish (2003) It doesn't make sense, and most of it didn't happen. Synopsis Will Bloom struggles to reconnect with his father Edward as Ed's entire life is retold in epic, tall tale-style. Why We Love It First and foremost, I should admit that most of the reason I love Big Fish is that I've seen it 15 times and cried every single time. Its light and airy, creative with a great sense of humor, and yet the true story of a lost connection between a father and son is important enough to get those waterworks going every time. The main reason this movie is so great is the story itself. It's a return to a storytelling that we'd forgotten about. The recreation of fairy tales that are brand new but seem familiar. Every segment of Edward Bloom's life is mostly believable and just partially fantastical. Instead of delving deep into a false world, Tim Burton »

"Shazam!" apparently isn't as dead as what has been reported earlier this year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, actor-turned-writer Bill Birch has been picked up by Warner Bros. Pictures to reboot this adaptation of a DC Comics series that features Captain Marvel. In scripting the screenplay, he will get a helping hand from DC Comics writer Geoff Johns.
Currently writing Warners' "One Finger Salute", Birch who has starred in such series as "The Unit" and "Just Shoot Me!" is the sixth writer brought into the project to pen the screenplay. "The Princess Bride" scribe William Goldman, "The Basketball Diaries" writer Bryan Goluboff, "Garfield" screenwriters Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow, and "Big Fish" penner John August have all taken a crack at adapting the comic series.
Birch's co-writer, Johns, is one of the three DC Comics heavyweights hired by the studio to act as consultants on DC projects. With the tapping of Birch and Johns, »

A couple of new screenwriter updates today. Warner Brothers has hired former actor Billy Birch and DC Comics writer Geoff Johns to kick-start and co-write a new version of the Shazam! movie that never got off the ground. Birch is the sixth writer to take a crack at adapting the character Captain Marvel following William Goldman (The Princess Bride), Bryan Goluboff (The Basketball Diaries), Joel Cohen and Alec Sokolow (Garfield) and John August (Big Fish, The Nines). Last we heard in back in January, the project was dead, but apparently Get Smart's Peter Segal is still attached to direct and is waiting for the new script. In other news, Spielberg's new DreamWorks has hired Oscar winning screenwriter Bruce Joel Rubin (Ghost, Jacob's Ladder, The Time Traveler's Wife) to write an English remake of the 2002 Japanese cult hit Resurrection, which has tentatively been re-titled to Rainbow Bridge. Yesterday's Daily TwitPic, featuring Jeremy Piven launching himself off of a WWE turnbuckle, is about as far from today's as you can get. Does anyone really not know who Miley Cyrus is anymore? Even if Disney's "Hannah Montana" is outside your personal lens, she's sort of hard to avoid. You might not recognize her music, but the name and face are pretty household by now.
A random bit of trivia I picked up while prepping this post: Cyrus was in Tim Burton's "Big Fish" as the character Little Ruthie. News to me.
Anyway, your Daily TwitPic proves that Miley doesn't need makeup and stage lights to look adorable. As this pic proves, all she really needs is a beach, a slightly canted camera angle and that radiant smile of hers.
For an early look at the Daily TwitPic, make sure you check out Brian Warmoth's Twitter-Wood column!

Writer/director John August ( Charlie and the Chocolate Factory , Big Fish ) has optioned Steve Hely's novel "How I Became a Famous Novelist," reports Variety . August will adapt the book and may direct the film. In this blistering evisceration of celebrity culture and literary fame, a roguish loser sets out to write the best-sellingest best seller of all time. When he actually pulls it off, he winds up tearing like a tornado across America's cultural landscape. "It's about thinking you have the system all figured out, realizing you don't, then faking it," said August. »

A great announcement tonight from one of the most beloved screenwriters in Hollywood. John August has optioned Steve Hely's novel "How I Became a Famous Novelist" and will adapt and potentially direct the project. August, who is finishing up screenplays for Preacher and Dark Shadows, also previously wrote Go, Charlie's Angels, Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Corpse Bride. He broke into directing in 2007 with The Nines but hasn't slated any other directorial projects since. While he does have a lot of good scripts in the works, I'm excited to see him take on a more personal project like this once again! Description from Amazon: "Biting, hilarious and improbably affectionate, comedy writer Hely's debut skewers the literary world with a sendup of the quest to write the Great American Novel. Words are Pete Tarslaw's thing, and after watching a bestselling novelist prattle on about the truth, his calling, »

John August is a screenwriter I've been following for the last decade. He broke onto the scene with a spec script titled Go, which was directed for the screen by Doug Liman (a film I highly recommend). Since then August has written a bunch of adaptations and remakes, mostly in association with director Tim Burton (Big Fish, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Corpse Bride). He made a fantastic directorial debut with an original independent sci-fi mystery drama The Nines, which was a hit at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival, but flew virtually under the radar of most (I also recommend this film, although I'll admit that it has gotten a polarizing response). I've been waiting and hoping for August to journey behind the camera once again, but his much in demand screenwriting duties have kept him away. He's producing Prince of Persia, wrote Preacher, and is also attached to Burton's Frankenweenie »

There were plenty of responses to last week's Tim Burton poll, and in the end it was Ed Wood that just barely beat out Edward Scissorhands to take the top spot as his finest work to date. I can certainly understand how many would rank these two the highest, followed by Beetlejuice, although I do think Pee-wee's Big Adventure is a little underrated here. And as much as I expected to see Mars Attacks down at the bottom, I was hoping a few more supporters might come out of the woodwork. Now for the all important question: how would Burton's Planet of the Apes remake have fared in this poll? 1. Ed Wood -- 19.9% 2. Edward Scissorhands -- 18.1% 3. Beetlejuice -- 14.2% 4. Big Fish -- 13.7% 5. Batman -- 13% 6. Pee-wee's Big Adventure -- 8.3% 7. Sleepy Hollow -- 6.2% 8. Sweeney Todd -- 2.8% 9. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory -- 1.8% 9. Mars Attacks! -- 1.8% For more posts like this visit FilmJunk.com. »

San Diego — What man wouldn't enjoy getting naked with Angelina Jolie? What woman wouldn't be thrilled at the notion of seeing Danny DeVito in the buff?
Ok, so maybe the answer to that second question is "most of them." But nevertheless, when the always-unpredictable DeVito met up with MTV News at Comic-Con, he said he was eager to give the world what they didn't want — and make them laugh while he was at it.
"In one episode, you'll see more of me than you have in the past, and more of me than you'd probably like to see," DeVito said during a conversation about the new season of his hilarious FX show, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia." "[I'm nude] in every conceivable way — I'm being literal. »
