Interview With Kevin Rankin: "Trauma" Character Just Happens to be a Gay Emt

9 November 2009 2:52 PM, PST | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Talk about traumatic!

NBC recently announced that they are canceling Trauma, their new show about paramedics set in San Francisco (although they have said they will air the remaining few episodes).

This is a shame for gay viewers, because the show's cast includes Tyler, a major gay character who is actually complicated and gets actual screentime. In the October 26th Halloween episode “Masquerade,” Tyler, played by Kevin Rankin, revealed a mask of a different kind when he came out to his riding partner, Boone, an African American man who is clearly uncomfortable with gays.

In other words, the show is "going there" on the complicated emotions and politics of homophobia in the African American community.

Recently, we talked to Kevin, who might also be familiar to viewers from his reoccurring role as a paralyzed athelete on Friday Night Lights. The interview took place before NBC had made a final decision regarding Trauma's fate. »

'Gossip Girl' threesome: do parents really have reason to worry?

6 November 2009 4:05 PM, PST | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

Tantalizing promos that tease a possible sexual threesome during the Nov. 9 episode of Gossip Girl may have ticked off the Parents Television Council but it seems unlikely the CW will give the advocacy group anything to complain about to the FCC. Though the CW wouldn't comment on next week's episode, those familiar with the network's standards and practices procedures say the infamous Without a Trace teen orgy scene on CBS had a big impact on how the CW depicts sexual intercourse between teen characters, especially on Gossip Girl. In 2006, the FCC fined 111 CBS affiliates a record $3.6 million for airing what »

"Law & Order: Criminal Intent" nabs two new leading ladies

3 November 2009 6:00 AM, PST | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Talk about your shift change. Law & Order: Criminal Intent is getting an overhaul and then some as its adds bisexual actress Saffron Burrows and Oscar-nominated actress Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio to its upcoming ninth season.

The new cast members come in the wake of the departure of four series regulars: original stars Vincent D’Onofrio and Kathryn Erbe along with Eric Bogosian and Julianne Nicholson. Jeff Goldblum will be the only remaining principal cast member.

Nicholson’s Det. Megan Wheeler is being replaced by Burrows, who will be Goldblum’s new partner. Mastrantonio, meanwhile, will become the first female captain for the Major Case Squad, taking over for Bogosian.

Mastrantonio had a recurring role on Without a Trace, but this will be her first regular TV gig. I’m glad to see she is back; I had a little thing for her back in her Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves days. »

First Female Captain of 'Law and Order: Ci' Hired

2 November 2009 12:16 AM, PST | Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news »

"Law & Order: Criminal Intent" is refreshed with the arrival of a new captain in the ninth season. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, known for her recurring role as Anne Cassidy on "Without a Trace" will join the show as the successor of Captain Danny Ross who is leaving after three years in his position. There is no name of the character yet.

Shift in the captain position has been taking place since James Deakins headed the Major Case Squad division and was replaced by Ross in 2006. The casting of Mastrantonio marks the first time a woman is assigned as the captain.

Other four characters are also making an exit from the show as its focus is given to Jeff Goldblum and Saffron Burrows' characters. The regulars who will not be seen in the new season would be Vincent D'Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, Eric Bogosian and Julianne Nicholson. According to EW, one of »

Kidman And Jackman Snubbed At AFI Awards

29 October 2009 5:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Baz Luhrmann's epic Australia has been nominated for six Australian Film Institute awards - but stars Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman have been passed over for the country's most prestigious ceremony.

The $130 million (£81 million) blockbuster, the most expensive film ever made Down Under, was expected to lead the pack at the upcoming awards show, but missed out on nominations in the main categories - including the coveted AFI Best Film prize.

Both Kidman and Jackman were also noticeably absent from the best actor/actress lists.

Luhrmann's romance was nominated for the New Member's Choice Award, Best Sound, Original Music Score, Production Design, Costume Design and Best Supporting Actor for young star Brandon Walters.

Australia was outdone by director Robert Connolly's Balibo, which earned 14 nominations, and Samson and Delilah, which scooped 13.

Both will compete in the Best Film category against Beautiful Kate, Blessed, Mao's Last Dancer and Mary and Max.

Russell Crowe is in the running for the AFI International Award for Best Actor for his role in State of Play, alongside Martin Henderson of TV hit House, Anthony Lapaglia from Without A Trace and Guy Pearce for Bedtime Stories. »

Christina Hendricks wants to reach gay women

16 October 2009 11:00 AM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

Whether you caught on to AMC’s Mad Men in its first season, or the buzz is slowly drawing you into its third, most of us by now know of Sterling and Cooper’s gorgeous, red-headed office manager, Joan Holloway. Who we should be getting to know more, however, is Christina Hendricks, the woman who makes Joan our favorite, and apparently has become Mad Men’s gay icon.

In the November issue of the Advocate, Hendricks somehow manages to make herself even more drool-worthy. She’s witty, hilarious, loves the gays and “would love” for Joan to “explore bisexuality” at some point on the series, to which I say "please, please do."

In the interview, Advocate writer Brandon Voss declares that Joan is key in attracting a gay audience to the show, but the actress claims she has yet to feel the lesbian love:

Nicole Steinwedell Discusses The Unit

8 October 2009 7:07 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

After going through the usual string of career-starting roles in guest-starring TV stints and small film roles, Nicole Steinwedell found her big break when she was cast as Bridget Sullivan in The Unit, although sadly that break was short-lived when the series was canceled earlier this year. Thanks to the magic of DVD, though, the series can live on in homes forever with the recent release of the 19-disc complete series set The Unit: The Complete Giftset, which was released on DVD on September 29 along with the final season DVD sets The Unit: Season 4 on DVD and Blu-ray. I had the chance to talk to this lovely young actress over the phone recently, and here's what she had to say.

So, can you first talk about how you came on board with The Unit and maybe your first experiences meeting with (creator) David (Mamet) of (executive producer) Shawn (Ryan)?

Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: 'Three Rivers' might need some CPR

5 October 2009 1:51 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

My name is Alynda and I am an organ donor. There, now everybody knows and we don't have to go through any confusion or sticky sitches in the hospital, Three Rivers-style. What did you think of the Rivers debut, the few of you who watched it? (If you missed it, by the way, you can catch it here.) I'm still trying to decide if I'm giving it too much leeway because star Alex O'Loughlin is in my imaginary-boyfriend stable (and we're pretty serious, with his having met my mom and all). But I'll try to be objective. Let's start »

Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: Oh yeah, 'The Forgotten.' I almost well…you know

2 October 2009 2:31 PM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Is it just me, or does it seem like The Forgotten kind of snuck onto the fall TV schedule? Like it picked a quiet little corner opposite the much-more hyped (and deservedly so) The Good Wife, and Jay Leno doing all he can to keep a network afloat? I point out the oddity of it because Christian Slater is in the lead role. Of course, the last time he tried this network TV thing it didn't work out so well. Don't get me wrong, I liked My Own Worst Enemy, his NBC show about a suburban dad who doesn't know »

TV Review: ‘Medium’ Jumps Networks, Still Delivers Thrills

25 September 2009 1:24 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – When NBC committed five hours a week to “The Jay Leno Show,” we knew a few corners would have to be cut when it came to scripted programming at the peacock network but no one really expected that the consistent (both creatively and in the ratings) “Medium” would get the axe. NBC’s unwanted program has found a new home on CBS and makes the network jump largely unaltered and ready to keep delivering the thrills that fans expect.

Television Rating: 3.5/5.0 In what would have been a cruel joke on the audience if CBS hadn’t save the day, the fifth season of “Medium” ended with Allison Dubois (Patricia Arquette) in a coma. After playing with the traditional “dream sequence opening” of the show, the sixth season premiere of “Medium” opens with Allison coming back to life. But has she returned the same?

Poppy Montgomery Dishes on Her Boundary-Pushing Boy

22 September 2009 5:00 AM, PDT | People - CelebrityBabies | See recent People - CelebrityBabies news »

Freeman/Empics/Abaca Time moves fast, and Poppy Montgomery wants to make the most of hers with son Jackson Phillip Deveraux, 20 months. “I have been working since he was born,” she told Celebrity Baby Blog at the Pink Party to benefit the Cedars-Sinai Women’s Cancer Research Institute in Los Angeles on Saturday, “so I am going to take the rest of this year just to be with him.”

Although she will “re-evaluate” the situation in January when Jackson begins preschool, for now the twosome have been passing the time much like any other mother and son. “We’re just hanging out,” Poppy shares. “We have a toddler group and we go to the park…I’m just ‘Mom,’ which has been really fun for me.”

Most of the time! Jackson is “testing every boundary under the sun,” Poppy concedes before adding:

“Everything he is not supposed to do, he wants to do. »

Lapaglia Explains Shaved-head Look

15 September 2009 3:01 PM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Aussie star Anthony Lapaglia celebrated the end of each season of recently-cancelled missing persons drama Without A Trace by shaving off his hair.

The actor played a no-nonsense detective in the show for seven years and spent every summer with no hair, growing it back for the start of each new season.

Currently sporting a Mohawk-style buzz cut to celebrate the end of the drama, the Lantana star tells WENN, "Every year, as soon as I get a break from work, I'd shave my head. I like shaving my hair off.

"The first time I did it was for a play and I really liked it because people's attitude towards you change. Suddenly I'd get in an elevator and people would be afraid of me. I thought that was very interesting to see that people really do identify with their hair. If you take their hair away they get freaked out seriously. It's a whole psychological thing.

"It's a good thing I have a good shaped head, instead of a gnarly bump somewhere."

And now he's thinking of turning his summer haircut into a new documentary.

He explains, "I had some friends who had to go through chemotherapy and even watching them go through that seemed to be more disconcerting to them than the cancer itself, which I found odd. I would've been much more concerned about the cancer.

"I realised there's a documentary in here somewhere - if I can get five friends willing to shave their heads and see what happens. I remember the first time I shaved it off, I looked in the mirror and said, 'Jesus, who's that?' You do actually identify with your hair a lot more than you think." »

Bruckheimer Pilot Coming To NBC

12 September 2009 11:49 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

NBC has picked up an unnamed pilot from Jerry Bruckheimer that is toted as an action procedural series.  (Hmm, sounding like a cop show.)

A generic outline to the pilot says it’s a about a team that is charged with the responsibilities of making sure fugitive criminals don’t evade justice.

That sounds like Dog the Bounty Hunter on A&E!

The latest TV project that I know of from Bruckheimer is the wonderfully gritty undercover cop drama, Dark Blue, with Dylan McDermott, and he’s also brought out the soon-to-be-airing pilot of The Forgotten with Christian Slater.

Sadly, for me, Bruckheimer has been the driving force behind other shows that have hooked me, such as CSI: NY, CSI: Miami, CSI, Cold Case, Without a Trace, Eleventh Hour and oddly, The Amazing Race.

Even though the outline of this new mystery show seems familiar, Bruckheimer may just bring it »

Judge Dismisses Managers Suit Against Sanchez

11 September 2009 1:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

A lawsuit brought against actress Roselyn Sanchez by her former management team over claims the star cut them out of commission has been thrown out of court.

Bosses at the Collective Management Group sued the Without A Trace actress in May over allegations they were due more than $135,000 (£90,000) for helping Sanchez land her regular role on the hit TV drama.

They also claimed they were owed at least $30,000 (£20,000) for helping Sanchez land a role in a movie called Yellow.

But a judge sided with Sanchez, and dismissed the suit on 1 September.

Cole Denies Marriage Reports

British model Lily Cole has laughed off reports she's set to wed her actor boyfriend.

The 21 year old has been dating Without A Trace star Enrique Murciano since last year.

The couple sparked speculation they would marry, after Cole was spotted wearing a band on her ring finger earlier this year.

But the beauty is adamant she's not going to be exchanging vows with Murciano just yet - insisting the rumours are false.

Cole says, "No (we are not getting married), that was all speculative. But we are very happy together - incredibly so." »

Prime Suspect Heads For U.S.

3 September 2009 9:06 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Dame Helen Mirren's award-winning British TV drama Prime Suspect is to be remade in the U.S.

The Queen actress is famed for her role as police chief Jane Tennison in the crime series, which ran from 1991 until 2006, for which she won two Emmy Awards.

Now television bosses in America want to base a new show on the hit programme's format, which will have its two-hour pilot written by Without A Trace's Hank Steinberg.

NBC's Angela Bromstad says, "Our intention is to create another classic television show from this brilliant original format. Hank Steinberg was key in helping us secure this project, and we are incredibly excited about this modern vision for the show."

The programme marks a new collaboration between networks ITV and NBC - earlier this year the British company signed up to create a U.K. version of NBC's Law and Order. »

NBC opens its Prime Suspect division

3 September 2009 12:30 AM, PDT | Corona's Coming Attractions | See recent Corona's Coming Attractions news »

When some British program is a success in its homeland the odds are very good that an American version of it will get made. Proving that there is no exception to this rule comes today's news that NBC is developing a two-hour version of Prime Suspect, the acclaimed English police procedural that considerably raised the profile of Helen Mirren with American audiences.

NBC has picked Hank Steinberg, writer on Without a Trace and a consulting producer on the peacock network's Kings, to write the backdoor pilot. No casting has been done yet but obviously Mirren's role as the leader of a police homicide division is going to be a highly coveted part for middle-aged actresses. As Detective Chief Inspector Jane Tennison, Mirren won two Emmys for two of the seven Prime Suspect mini-series that ITV produced between 1991 and 2006. Critics gave high marks not just to Mirren's portrayal of a tough-as-nails »
