'American Gladiators' And 'Jackass' Bring Their Stunts To 3-D

20 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

As long as Hollywood is turning board games into movies, why not also mine game shows? I'd love to see movies made out of "Press Your Luck" and that Japanese show where contestants had to guess what dangerous animal was atop their head. In a way, "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" has already been turned into a movie ("Slumdog Millionaire"), and now a producer of "300" is bringing "American Gladiators" to the big screen.

Scott Mednick, also an executive producer of this fall's "Where the Wild Things Are," has hired "Point Break" screenwriter Peter Iliff to script the previously announced adaptation of the physical competition series as a movie that, Variety says, will "feature the Herculean characters as superheroes." But will amateur athletes be cast as the villains? It would certainly be appropriate to the format of the show, which involved everyday contenders battling the gigantic male and female Gladiators »

Jackass 3-D: Why Not Go D-Box as Well?

20 November 2009 7:41 AM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Somehow, we knew it was coming. With the ever-growing need to make everything and anything a 3D movie event, Hollywood is finally (and I use that lightly) taking things too far. According to our friends at Cinematical, a new Paramount Pictures release slate for 2010 has a listing for Jackass 3-D. Yes, you read that right -- not just a clever title, but an actual 3-dimensional sequel in the Jackass franchise, a chaotic follow-up to 2006's Jackass: Number Two. Things have been quite on the homefront for Johnny Knoxville and his gang of goons since releasing Number Two in '06, a movie that was made for around $12 million and grossed nearly $85 million worldwide. It seems like a no-brainer for Paramount, who is yet to comment on this story. Why wouldn't they want to make another cheap movie that grosses big, no matter the quality? And why not do it in 3-D? 'Jackass' Returns...In 3-D

20 November 2009 7:06 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Well, all I can say is I hope there's still enough story left to tell: Cinematical reveals that Paramount is pushing a Jackass 3-D into theaters next year. Clearly falling into the "better you than me" category, watching the Jackass stunt players risk life and limb in the most ridiculous, grotesque fashion imaginable has been downright huge business for the studio, which of course, always had an inside track thanks to the show's MTV roots.

The two films have combined for over $150 million and cost about one-tenth of that amount, and I apologize for calling them "films." A term like "geek shows" seems more appropriate, and I'm sure Johnny Knoxville and company would find that rather flattering. And after four long years, they'll be back with more things you can't bear to watch. »

Is Jackass 3 in 3D Arriving in 2010?

19 November 2009 3:09 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It seems someone let the cat out of the bag a bit early.  Thanks to William Goss spotting Jackass 3D on Paramount’s 2010 schedule, it seems the adventures of Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera and Steve-o are going to continue on movie screens….but this time we’re going to get them in 3D!  While I thought the first Jackass movie was an amazing cinematic achievement, I didn’t think the second movie was worth anyone’s time and most of it played like a long deleted scene.  Of course I’ll be the first one in line for a 3D Jackass movie…but after my recent experiences on a movie shooting in 3D, I’m not 100% sold this is really happening.   My explanation after the jump:

While I cannot tell you where I was, I can use what I saw and learned on set to explain why this Jackass 3D movie might not happen. »

'Jackass 3-D' is Happening

19 November 2009 12:50 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Back in 2007, our own Christopher Campbell (who's back on staff, baby!) told us that, back in 2006, a third Jackass film seemed like a sure thing in the wake of Jackass: Number Two. Steve-o told Howard Stern then that they'd begin shooting at the start of 2008...

Cut to 2009, and the Paramount slate for 2010 in our inbox happens to list a Jackass 3-D, with a release date to be determined. Johnny Knoxville and company don't seem too busy of late, and even with the eye-popping added dimension, this sounds like a relatively cheap production to give the go-ahead to. If Wikipedia is to be believed (I know), Bam Margera confirmed in a much more recent interview for a Finnish newspaper that filming would begin this January around the world.

Since there's really not all that much else to report on this yet, let me just assure you that my pals »

Jackass Coming Back to Theaters in 3D?

19 November 2009 8:56 AM, PST | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

If some new web stories are to be believed, we might see Johnny Knoxville and his crazy crew in 3D. /Film discovered on William G Boss' Twitter account that Paramount has slated Jackass 3D for 2010.

The site discovered that a Whois Search revealed a domain name for the film was registered, so this really could be happening.

Of course, the studio hasn't released any details for a follow-up to Jackass Number Two, but we'll certainly keep you posted on any new details on Jackass 3D as soon as we have more information.

Where the Wild Things Are: A Monstrously Mediocre Children's Movie

13 November 2009 8:46 PM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

Spike Jonze had a pretty impeccable record, from directing Christopher Walken's triumphal dance in the video for Fatboy Slim's "Weapon of Choice," to producing MTV's transcendently stupid pain-porn Jackass, to his magnificent collaborations with Charlie Kaufman on Being John Malkovich and Adaptation. Nothing about that remotely suggests that he should adapt a children's book, though. He does a great job of evoking the weird and making it normal, but he's never quite pulled off believable emotion. Ultimately, that's what sinks Where the Wild Things Are. It's not just Jonze, though. The entire creative team is bizarre. Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, best known for fellating her mic at live shows, composed the soundtrack; Dave Eggers, best known for a fictionalized memoir (A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius) and a fictionalized biography (What is the What), adapted the 10 sentences... »

Exclusive photos, director comments: Savage County on-line shocker

10 November 2009 12:11 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Director David Harris sent along some exclusive pics (see them below) from his fright feature Savage County, an MTV production which will be presented in eight 10-minute on-line installments beginning next February. Lensed in Memphis, Tn this past summer, the movie (scripted by Harris and Dan Alvarado) is about a group of high-schoolers who run afoul of a vicious backwoods family, the Hardells.

Savage County is an unabashed homage to vintage rural horrors of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre breed, though Harris notes it has a true-life inspiration as well. “I grew up in Texas,” he tells Fango, “and as a kid, I was 100 percent sure that Chainsaw 1 and 2 were documentaries. We had a big woods near our neighborhood, with a 1800s house and a rambling old man with a shotgun and 100 cats—basically, a slightly less decrepit ‘Grandpa.’ That was the original big scare for me, and there was no »

Happy Birthday, Spike Jonze: Wake-Up Video

22 October 2009 6:00 AM, PDT | MTV Newsroom | See recent MTV Newsroom news »

If you happen to run into Spike Jonze today, be sure to give him a pat on the back for making a truly stunning film adaptation of "Where the Wild Things Are." But you can also wish him a happy birthday, as today he turns 40 years old. The man born Adam Spiegel spent his youth as a Bmx and skateboard enthusiast and got involved with filmmaking when he started filming his friends doing tricks and stunts. His warped visual style, wide-eyed innocence and sense of adventure have served him well, as he has become one of the most talked-about American film directors. 1999's "Being John Malkovich" and 2002's "Adaptation" were both formidable stories told with Jonze's slick mix of absurdist humor and childlike melancholy, but it's the recently-released "Where the Wild Things Are" that solidifies Jonze as a true genius.

Of course, the director has had a long history with MTV. »

Weekend Box Office - Where The Wild Things Are Grabs $32 Million. Paranormal Activity Breaks $20 Million

18 October 2009 11:41 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

People wanted to know “Where the Wild Things Are,” and it looks like they found out. The PG-rated boy-meets-beasts adventure took the top spot this weekend with $32 million in its first three days. The big story is still “Paranormal Activity” though, as it rises yet higher, landing at number three and proving to be one of the most successful indie roll-outs in recent memory. “The Stepfather” also performed better than a terrible movie should. Here’s the chart. The first number is what it made this weekend and the second is it’s total. More after the jump:

1 Where the Wild Things Are $32,470,000 - $32,470,000 2 Law Abiding Citizen            $21,250,000 - $21,250,000 3 Paranormal Activity            $20,163,000 - $33,717,000 4 Couples Retreat                 $17,949,000 - $63,339,000 5 The Stepfather (2009)        $12,300,000 - $12,300,000 6 Cloudy Meatballs                $8,100,000 -  $108,284,000 7 Zombieland                       $7,800,000 -   $60,823,000 8 Toy Story/Toy Story2 (3D)   $3,011,000 -   $28,594,000 9 Surrogates                        $1,922,000 -   $36,332,000 10 The Invention of Lying      $1,905,000 -  $15,495,000

Review: Where the Wild Things Are a Rowdy Rumpus (That'll Totally Make You Cry)

Review in a Hurry: Artfully oddball director Spike Jonze brings his aesthetic to the much-loved children's book about a rowdy kid who leaves home to become king of the monsters, only to find it's not easy being in charge. If you ever loved the book as a kid or parent (or both), you will cry. Yes you will. Don't fight it. The Bigger Picture: The director of quirky brain-teasers Being John Malkovich and Adaptation might not initially seem like a perfect fit to adapt a Maurice Sendak book, but his work on Beastie Boys videos and Jackass actually gives him the perfect understanding of a rowdy, 9-year-old sensibility. Glowing Early Review of ‘Where the Wild Things Are’

12 October 2009 10:21 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Our friend Harry Knowles over at Ain’t It Cool News has given the Spike Jonze film adaptation of the eponymous 1963 children’s book Where The Wild Things Are a glowing review.  Check out just one bit of praise they give give the film:

“…it could very well be the best film ever created about what it is like to be a 9 year old…it will conjure up primal childhood emotions of joy, regret, elation, confusion and you may realize that you’ve lost an awful lot, by simply growing up.”

Wow, to call that review “glowing” is an understatement!

The full review from AICN suggests the film, unlike almost every other, fulfills every wish that floods the mind when you imagine what Where the Wild Things Are could be.  On the other hand, it sets the bar really, really, high before even stepping into the theater.  Rarely is that a good thing. »

Directions to Zombieland

2 October 2009 2:28 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

If someone were to tell you about a new zombie comedy by a first-time feature director, shot on HD, most likely your thoughts wouldn’t turn to a large-scale adventure starring Woody Harrelson. Yet that’s exactly what Zombieland (now playing from Columbia Pictures) is: a loud, fun major-studio horror/comedy. As you can imagine, it was quite an undertaking for Ruben Fleischer to make this his big-screen debut—and one everyone around him was wary of.

“With a young director, the natural instinct is to question what they’re doing, especially when they’re dealing with people who are so experienced,” says Fleischer, whose background is largely in television. “There’s a degree of taking on the role of director, and you’ve got to step into those boots. I’m not the most confident or outgoing person in the day-to-day, but when you’re in charge of a »
