Palisades Tartan’s Asian Horror: Essential Collection Review

30 October 2009 3:34 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Just in time for Halloween, Palisades Tartan has grouped together three of the most successful Asian horror films of recent years in one region 2 DVD collection. Although terms such as ‘essential’ are woefully overused when it comes to such compilations, in this case it certainly rings true, as the three titles are arguably among the most important and influential examples of the modern Asian genre – not least since two of them have been the subject of markedly less successful Hollywood remakes. The films in question, “Audition”, “Dark Water” and “The Eye” also provide a showcase for three highly acclaimed directors in the ever prolific Takashi Miike (still best known in the West for his infamous “Ichi the Killer”), The Pang Brothers (who recently headed for the Us themselves with “The Messengers” and a remake of their own “Bangkok Dangerous”) and Hideo Nakata, whose “Ringu” launched the new wave of Eastern horror. »

Subtitled Trailer For Danny Pang’s Upcoming Seven 2 One

20 October 2009 8:15 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Hong Kong director Danny Pang’s cinematic output is certainly a mixed bag. Sometimes he can knock one out of the proverbial park — 2006’s “Re-cycle” immediately springs to mind — though this is usually followed up with something along the lines of “The Eye 10″ or “Forest of Death.” 24 Frames Per Second recently posted the trailer for Pang’s upcoming horror/thriller “Seven 2 One,” which, judging by the trailer, could go either way. I’m willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt on this one, mostly because the premise sounds promising. Cliche and a little tired, mind you, but promising. Here’s the lowdown: Convenience store clerks Chrissie and Katy decide to get back at their sleazy manager Leo by having their friends pose as robbers and hold up the store, but events escalate out of control into murder. What started as an elaborate prank sets off a butterfly effect of crime, »

Casting News: Channing Tatum to Star in 'The Darkness'

29 August 2009 10:26 AM, PDT | Channing Tatum Unwrapped | See recent Channing Tatum Unwrapped news »

Channing Tatum has a ton of potential projects in the works, and the horror film site Bloody Disgusting just reported some casting news on a new one. I read this particular news item when they first posted it on July 28th, but wanted to confirm it before I reported it to you all.

I have now confirmed that Chan has indeed signed on to star in 'The Darkness', the latest film from The Pang Brothers Danny Pang Fat and Oxide Pang Chun who directed the Asian and English remakes of 'The Eye' and 'Bangkok Dangerous'. Like Chan's current movie, 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra', the film will also be based on a comic book adaption.

"The Darkness" comic series was created by Marc Silvestri, Garth Ennis and David Wohl, under the Top Cow Productions banner. Ironically, Top Cow is the same comic book company that's »

Channing Tatum in for The Darkness, Out of Mafia Flick

11 August 2009 6:34 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Model-turned-actor Channing Tatum has not impressed me much in the few movies I have seen him in. Most recently, his performance as Duke in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was almost universally panned, but it's hard to judge an actor's true potential in a movie where the script is terrible and the focus is entirely on action and special effects. I know he has had a few dramatic roles in films like A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints and Stop-Loss, but I think most of his stock in Hollywood currently comes from starring roles in the dance flicks She's The Man and Step Up. Bloody Disgusting [1] reports that Tatum has signed on to star in The Darkness, the latest film from The Pang Brothers (The Eye, Bangkok Dangerous). Based on the comic book by Marc Silvestri, Garth Ennis, and David Wohl, he will play Jackie, a hitman for a New York mob family, »

Channing Tatum to star in The Darkness adaptation

30 July 2009 10:27 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Channing Tatum has been cast in the film adaptation of The Darkness, based on the series of American comic books, according to horror site Bloody-Disgusting.

The film is to be directed by The Pang Brothers, who helmed the original Hong Kong version of The Eye and the original and remake of Bangkok Dangerous.

In the Top Cow Productions comic book by Marc Silvestri, Garth Ennis and David Wohl, mafia hitman Jackie Estacado learns he has the powers of The Darkness, a malevolent spirit that has inhabited his family for generations.

The ancient force, passed down from father to son and manifesting on their 21st birthday, allows him to create any object, including living creatures, from darkness.

Estacado battles other mob groups as well as his archenemy The Angelus, a woman who wields the primal power of light.

In 2004, Dimension Films had paid a six-figure sum to develop a movie based on the comic, »

Channing Tatum To Star In ‘The Darkness’

According to Bloody-Disgusting, Channing Tatum (G.I. Joe, Step Up) has been cast in the latest comic book-cum-movie, The Darkness. The film is to be directed by The Pang Brothers, who were responsible for the original Asian version of The Eye and Bangkok Dangerous (both the original and the English language remake).

The Darkness comic series was created by Marc Silvestri, Garth Ennis and David Wohl, under the banner of Top Cow/Image. It follows Jackie Estacado, a hitman who “was targeted for assassination by the don of the New York mafia, ‘Uncle’ Paulie. He finds his body possessed by ‘the Darkness,’ a malevolent spirit that has inhabited his family for several generations, with the benefit of giving Jackie supernatural powers that feed off the dark.”

Apparently Dimension paid a six-figure sum to develop The Darkness back in 2004, originally hoping for a release in 2008. Needless to say that year has »

The Pang Brothers’ Storm Warriors Trailers and Clips

1 June 2009 1:27 PM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Let’s face it, when some guy name Lord Godless shows up wanting to do damage, it’s your duty to get up and knock him down a couple of pegs. And hey, if you happen to know those fancy martial arts that lets you fly and hop around mountains, that’s cool, too. Check out some new footage and two trailers (one a teaser) from the Pang Brothers’ (to my knowledge) first martial arts movie, “The Storm Warriors”, a sequel to 1998’s “The Storm Riders”. In the sequel, super warriors Wind and Cloud (returning players Ekin Cheng and Aaron Kwok) find themselves up against a ruthless Japanese warlord name Lord Godless (Simon Yam) intent on invading China. The sequel will co-star Nicholas Tse as Heart, Charlene Choi as Second Dream, Suet Lam as Piggy King, and Yan Tang as Muse. Bros Oxide Pang Chun and Danny Pang, most known »

Badass First Trailer for the Pang Brothers' Storm Warriors

31 May 2009 8:46 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

After the dismal debut of Bangkok Dangerous, the Pang Brothers have returned to China for their next film - The Storm Warriors. This is latest their exploration into martial arts - not that they haven't already featured martial arts in their films, but this is a period epic. For those who have forgotten who the Pang Brothers are, they're a directing team out of Hong Kong who brought us the original The Eye in 2002, The Messengers in 2007, a remake of their own film Bangkok Dangerous in 2008, and a handful of other Chinese features. And if you're hesitant about watching this trailer, don't be, it kicks some serious ass. This reminds me a bit of Kazuaki Kiriya's Goemon, but not as stylized as that. I'd love to check this out, I think it just looks like some badass martial arts fun, despite being from the Pang Brothers. Thoughts? Watch the »

Pang Brothers open new Eye in 3-D

23 March 2009 7:36 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Thailand’s Danny and Oxide Pang, best-known for the much-sequelized and U.S.-remade The Eye, are developing The Child’S Eye In 3D, Asia’s first dimensional fright feature, with Universe Films. It’s part of a 10-year exclusive deal Universe signed with the Pangs, whose actioner Bangkok Dangerous also spawned an English-language redux.

The Child’S Eye is set during the anti-government protest last November at the Bangkok airport, where six travelers from Hong Kong become stranded after the terminal is shut down. Three of them mysteriously vanish, and the others subsequently experience supernatural phenomena, including an underworld city with buildings, vehicles and people made up entirely of paper. There will be plenty of in-your-face 3-D tricks, the Pangs promise, including a creature. “We always enjoy new visual styles, so we went to see the 3-D Hollywood films the first chance we got, »

Pangs Give Audiences an Eyeful for 3D Sequel

23 March 2009 12:41 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Well, I guess it’s commendable that the Pang Brothers (Danny and Oxide) are aiming pretty freakin’ high for their next project. In their return to the genre that put them on the map, the Pangs are ready to offer up some more chills for horror fans with their newest movie, The Child’s Eye in 3D . Their first scare-fest, 2002’s The Eye , is of course the source material for the 2008 Jessica Alba debacle/film.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Child’s Eye will mark the first Asian film to be offered in the 3-D format.

Danny told THR that both he and his brother have been big fans of the new trends in filming styles, saying, “We always enjoy new visual styles, so we went to see the 3D Hollywood films the first chance we got. The technology of 3D filming is now well-developed enough for us to try applying our horror style. »

Pangs to Deliver The Child's Eye in 3D

10 March 2009 11:26 AM, PDT | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Let's try and forget about that horrid American remake of The Eye (though that Being Blind is Lots of Fun song I made up still brings a smile to my face), shall we? Danny and Oxide Pang's original chiller is still very much the goods! Yes, the sequels suck, especially Part 3 but hey! The next one's gonna be in 3D. Joy.

Production Weekly reports this morning that the Pang Brother's are hot to get started on their third sequel, The Child's Eye, in 3D. The only other details to report about this new project is that Elanne Kwong & Rainie Young have been cast.

Hey, as long as people aren't farting to keep the ghosts away (Damn you Part 3) I'll be more than happy to give this one a chance! Keep it here for more!
