Monkey Uncaged: The Ten Worst Gay Movies of All Time!

13 October 2009 5:59 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Send it to aftereltonflyingmonkey@yahoo.com! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

A Note from the Flying Monkey: Of the many emails I receive every week for my column, some are so good that they simply can’t be answered in just a few words. So from time to time, the editors have decided to let me out of the “cage” of that regular column, in a feature we’re calling Monkey Uncaged!

Q: What, in your opinion, is the worst gay film ever made? Why? – A.R.

A: A couple of months ago, I wrote a list of what I considered to be the ten most “important” gay male films – not what I felt were the “best,” mind you, but the ones that I felt had had the most impact either on the Glbt community or society at large. »

An Interview with Dee Wallace - From Cujo to Superbeasto

29 August 2009 8:48 AM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Dee Wallace is a horror icon and Fango Favorite. Having appeared in such classic fright fare as Cujo, The Howling, and Wes Craven's The Hills Have Eyes, Wallace has become a familiar face who's appearance is welcomed by genre fans around the globe. With upcoming roles in Ti West's acclaimed The House Of The Devil and Rob Zombie's The Haunted World Of El Superbeasto, Fango contributor Lee Gambin has unearthed a retro interview with the actress to present here on Fangoria.com for the very first time.

Fangoria: How did you get started in show business?

Dee Wallace: I got started in acting very early.  My mom directed all the religious plays at church, Dad built the scenery, and Grandma did the costumes!  I modeled quite a bit and did commercials. I got started in the actual business, that is being paid for work, at 27 when I left Kansas City, »

White Behind Action Comedy Babe in the Woods

4 August 2009 9:47 PM, PDT | TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news »

Columbia Pictures has acquired Babe in the Woods, an original action-comedy spec script written by scribe/actor Mike White, say the trades. White’s credits include Orange County and School of Rock. He made his directorial debut in 2007 with the Molly Shannon dramedy Year of the Dog. The script is about a female freshman from the Midwest who arrives at Yale and becomes a target of the New Jersey mob. White will produce through his Rip Cord Prods. banner with David Bernad. He'll do a polish on the script before it goes out to directors and cast. White's Rip Cord, which has its deal at Paramount, recently completed Gentlemen Broncos, written and directed by Jared Hess, for Fox Searchlight, which will release it in October. That film is an outgrowth of White's relationship with Hess from Nacho Libre, which White wrote and Hess directed. Rip Cord is also producing Oh »

Orphan (2009)

20 July 2009 10:14 AM, PDT | Pretty/Scary | See recent pretty-scary news »

By Jim Hemphill

It’s hard to think of a recent American movie that’s as smart and ambitious as Orphan but has so little regard for its own audience’s intelligence. There’s a great horror film buried somewhere underneath the gimmicky sound design (in which the audio is either dead silent or pitched at the level of a Motorhead concert), false scares, and contrived plot twists, but clearly director Jaume Collet-Serra and writers David Leslie Johnson and Alex Mace don’t trust their viewers to appreciate it. They take a challenging, deeply unsettling meditation on the horrors of parenthood and marriage (among other things), and turn it into something so comforting and pat that it makes Ghosts of Girlfriends Past look like Taxi Driver...

Orphan tells the story of Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John (Peter Sarsgaard), a couple whose marriage has been plagued with problems: Kate’s alcoholism, »

'G.I. Joe' Drama: Rumored Firings at the Top

11 June 2009 1:27 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Did Paramount can G.I. Joe director Stephen Sommers? It's the day's big rumor, and if the specifics about the story weren't so believable, it would be much easier to let this one go.

The story goes that the test screenings of the film returned the worst reviews in the history of Paramount. I find that part a little dubious; after all, this is the studio that made Alfie, Supsect Zero, and The Stepford Wives in a five-month span. But it doesn't seem out of the realm of possibility that the test screenings were bad, maybe even surprisingly so.

And because this is one of the studio's big ticket items (you don't waste Super Bowl commercials on movies you want to bury), Paramount likely would react strongly to those screening results, perhaps even overreacting. Producer Don Murphy posted a very long and detailed explanation of what happened next (which has »

Celebrity Birthdays - 03/21/09

21 March 2009 7:35 AM, PDT | PopStar | See recent PopStar news »

Can you guess whose birthdays are today based on the following clues? He was an important character in the Harry Potter world but did not live past TOotP. Although he has many interesting credits to his name, he is best known for portraying Lieutenant Groves in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. She plays the role of Blair Cramer in One Life to Live - in over 300 episodes! He's done everything in his power to control the life of his ex-wife, Britney Spears! One of his very first movies was WarGames, a cult classic now. He's famous for many reasons, but perhaps you'll remember him best as Inspector Gadget? We're not quite sure what originally made her famous, but she's a household name, sort of like Madonna, but we call her Rosie. First up, Sirius Black of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Gary Oldman, 51, has quite a long and distinguished career. »

Renecks vs. Robots in Leigh Scott's Chrome Angels

19 January 2009 7:15 AM, PST | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

I almost ignored this low budget Bitch Slap meets The Stepford Wives scifi thriller when it was scooped to us by tipster Avery, but after watching the film's high octane trailer I couldn't resist sharing the fun this fine Monday morning. I mean, it's got everything you need to get up first thing in the am - babes, bikes, bots. John Woo and Robert Rodriguez would be proud.

Chrome Angels is due out from Bullet Films in summer 2009. Trailer after the break.

The birds of prey are circling

8 January 2009 7:46 PM, PST | blogs.suntimes.com/ebert | See recent Roger Ebert's Blog news »

Why do we thirst for movie stars to fail? Why are so many showbiz journalists like hyenas circling a crippled prey? Why do so many gossip columnists behave like jilted lovers or betrayed investors, livid with anger at what they once valued so highly? Why are a few stars singled out like the victims of school bullies? Why do the box office receipts of "Australia" appear in almost every news outlet, but an actual review of it appears in so few?

Here is a recent headline: "Australia" Another Nicole Kidman Letdown. We learn in the attached story from Reuters:

Twentieth Century Fox appears to have given up on director Baz Luhrmann's latest period epic in North America, and is hoping that foreign sales will rescue the costly picture. The movie has sold just $44.3 million worth of tickets at the U.S. and Canadian box office after five weekends, and »
