Carl Rinsch Hired to Direct Universal's Black Lagoon Remake

We've written quite a bit about the Creature From the Black Lagoon remake in development over the last year or so. However, Hero Complex is now reporting that director Breck Eisner (who is finishing up his Crazies remake) has been replaced by Carl Rinsch, the commercials director who was originally thought to be directing the Alien prequel then got hired to take on 47 Ronin instead. It looks like once Rinsch is done with 47 Ronin sometime late next year, he'll get to work on this Creature From the Black Lagoon remake. The studio is supposedly going "back to the drawing board" this time and throwing out any old screenplays.
Breck Eisner had originally been set to direct a script written by Gary Ross (Big, Pleasantville, Seabiscuit). Ross is still producing, although it looks like they'll be finding a new screenwriter who will whip up a new draft before moving forward.

For quite some time, Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) was developing a remake of Creature From The Black Lagoon for Universal. After what seems like an eternity, the film has finally found its director. Universal is in talks with Carl Erik Rinsch, son-in-law of Ridley Scott, to direct the film. While you might not know much of Rinsch's work yet, he was in talks to direct the Alien prequel and recently signed with Universal to direct 47 Ronin with Keanu Reeves.

He may have lost his chance to direct the fifth Alien movie, but director Carl Rinsch is doing pretty well for himself. Last month, we told you that Rinsch would be behind the camera on 47 Ronin, the film adaptation of the Japanese Chūshingura legend. Now it looks like Rinsch has lined up an even higher profile film with Hero Complex reporting that Rinsch is in talks to direct the remake of The Creature from the Black Lagoon. The 1954 original involved a scientific expedition encountering a dangerous amphibious humanoid who may or may not be from a darkly colored body of water.
Multiple directors over the past three decades have tried to revive Creature, from John Landis to Peter Jackson to the most recent director to depart, Brick Eisner. Eisner, who recently remade George Romero’s 1973 horror film The Crazies, has now moved on to remake David Cronenberg’s 1979 horror film,

Tobey Maguire has just been linked to the role of Bilbo Baggins for "The Hobbit", but his camp was quick to come out with a denial. Responding to the circulating rumor was the 34-year-old's publicist Kelly Bush, who told Movieline the debunking statement. Steering clear of "no comment at this time", the rep insisted, "This is false!"
Speculation of the "Spider-Man 4" actor could be taking on the fantasy film's lead role was sparked by Latino Review (Lr). On Monday, December 14, the site came up with the scoop, mentioning "agency sources" have told Lr that the actor is "in the early stages of talks between CAA and the producers of The Hobbit."
Maguire himself has told Lr back in November during the promotion of his film "Brothers" that he would love to work with "The Hobbit" director Guillermo del Toro. When pressed further, the Red Pollard of "Seabiscuit" was quick to add,

For me (and many others), Venom — the black-clad, toothy, evil version of Spider-Man — was one of the weaker elements in Spider-Man 3. But some contingent of the film-watching community must have liked the character, because a Venom movie has been rumored for weeks now.
But according to Sam Raimi, who has directed all the 'Spider-Man' films to-date, and is on-board for the next three installments, the potential spin-off would not necessarily be connected to his movie. That is, Venom going solo doesn‘t mean the character will be re-appearing in any 'Spider-Man' film he helms.
"It hasn't come up to me," Raimi told MTV News about his Spidey sharing universes with Venom. "I think that the studio is just letting me work with the writers and trying to make the best stories possible for this universe. I don't know if Venom is a separate universe or not.

Children are so hard to incorporate into film and theater. The actors always are pesky, uncooperative, and rarely any good. However Max Records of “Where The Wild Things Are” stands out among today’s young actors with composure, emotion, and charm.
Records plays Max, an innocent boy who throws tantrums in a bratty, boisterous manor. He acts exactly as a child should though, beginning the film playing in the snow, throwing snowballs, and building an igloo. He ends up getting hurt and crying like a child should, but in return we see the wrath of Max and the love of his mother. Later Max plays out the scene from the book step for step by throwing a tantrum at the kitchen table and gets sent to bed. Flash forward and we see Max traveling to his own world toward the wild things. Max interacts and has an uneven time with the creatures.

Last week we reported Gary Ross was in talks with Sony Pictures to write and direct the Spider-Man spin-off Venom. Now it seems the comic book movie will have to wait because Ross is close to directing Matt Helm for Paramount.
The movie would be based on a series of 27 novels by author Donald Hamilton about a counter-agent and similar in tone to the Bourne franchise. Steven Spielberg was once considered for the director’s chair, but may end up getting a producer’s credit on the film. (Spielberg has since moved to remake Harvey.)
According to The Playlist, George Clooney and Jon Hamm were considered for the title character, but eliminated for separate reasons. Bradley Cooper (The Hangover, The A-Team) is the front runner for the lead. That guy must have a phenomenal agent, he’s popping up in contention for everything. I have to admit, the notion of Gary Ross, the guy behind “Pleasantville” and “Seabiscuit” writing “Spider-Man 4″ was kinda a shock already, but the idea of him writing and directing a “Venom” spin-off movie was just … strange, though not unheard of; Marvel has, after all, given “Thor” to Shakespeare guy Kenneth Branagh, and that’s possibly the biggest Wtf moment of 2008. Now, word from The Playlist is that Venom will have to wait, because Gary Ross has just hopped onboard “Matt Helm” with an eye towards writing and directing it.
Originally, Steven Spielberg was anxious to direct “Matt Helm”, a personal favorite of his, but apparently a recent split between Spielberg’s Dreamworks and Paramount may have dampened the uber director’s affections for the Donald Hamilton series of spy novels. As a result, Spielberg has voluntarily left the project, leaving space open for Gary Ross to take over.

Sam Raimi has said that the potential villains for the forthcoming Spider-Man 4 will depend on Peter Parker's story arc. Seabiscuit scribe Gary Ross was recently hired to rewrite the script for the fourth instalment of the Marvel superhero franchise, which will begin filming in February 2010 for a May 5, 2011 release. Raimi said that he is "not allowed to say at this point" who the bad guy will be in the follow-up. The last movie Gary Ross wrote and directed was 2003's Seabiscuit. Except for a little scriptwriting duties for The Tale of Despereaux, Ross has remained relatively quiet in Hollywood. But that's all changed.
While still finishing the script to Spider-Man 4, Ross was hired to rewrite and direct the Spider-Man 3 spin-off movie Venom, but that's not all. ThePlaylist reports that Ross will also direct Matt Helm, a project previously associated with Steven Spielberg.
A 33-volume, pulp novel series about a suave super-spy that began in the 1960s, Matt Helm was written Donald Hamilton. The series has already been adapted into four movies with Dean Martin in the 1960s (The Silencers, The Ambushers, Murderers Row, The Wrecking Crew), and a TV show in the '70s with Anthony Franciosa in the title role.

Last week, I made an off-hand comment that I'd like to see writer-director Gary Ross work more often. I mean, Pleasantville and Seabiscuit are the only films he's directed, even though he has a couple other projects down the road a piece. He's been linked to Venom, the Spider-Man spin-off he would tackle after writing the script for Spider-Man 4, and now he might take on another hot property.
The Playlist writes that Ross may take over the director's chair for Matt Helm, which was at the center of the messy Spielberg-DreamWorks-Paramount fallout earlier this year. Spielberg was supposed to direct it for Paramount, but the studio won't let him go near its new Bournesque franchise.

Last week it was widely reported that after providing a successful rewrite of the Spider-Man 4 script, Gary Ross had been approached by Columbia Pictures to rewrite the screenplay for the spin-off film, Venom, and to direct it himself. This was noteworthy for a variety of reasons, not least of which was the fact that Ross' writing-and-directing résumé, which includes Pleasantville and Seabiscuit, wouldn't suggest he was the guy for a comic-based summer blockbuster about an alien symbiote that turns people evil.
But now The Playlist says that, according to an unnamed but well-placed source, whatever Ross is doing with Venom will have to wait -- first he's going to direct a Matt Helm movie. The source says it's supposed to go into production next summer, which would push the shooting of Venom into 2011 at the earliest.

• I mentioned back in June how, not to be outdone by Tokyo's life-size Gundam, Kobe decided to build a life-size replica of Gigantor (better known there as Tetsujin 28-go). The 60-feet tall statue was finally completed last week, and unlike the life-size Gundam—which has now been dismantled—the life-size Gigantor is a permanent fixture in Kobe's Wakamatsu Park.

At the Zombieland premiere on September 23rd, Zombieland screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick said they'd turned in a couple drafts of the Venom script. But now it looks as though writer/director Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, The Tale of Despereaux) will be finessing the script into production. Ross is rewriting to direct Venom, according to a report in Variety. He's also working on the Spider-Man 4 script.
It's not known if Topher Grace will be revisiting the character he played in Spider-Man 3. Apparently this Spider-Man spinoff will be a completely fresh look at the Spider-Man bad guy, so it isn't necessary they stick with Grace. Variety says Venom will find Spider-Man's nemesis protecting the innocent.
Venom isn't the only spidey-ish film in the works. Sam Raimi is currently readying Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst, with shooting set for next year. Spider-Man 5 and 6 are in the screenwriting stage.

Filmmaker Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) will write and potentially direct “Venom” spin-off, based on the villain from “Spider-Man 3.”
In the comic series, Venom is a parasite alien that bonds with Peter Parker and later his newsroom rival.
Back in 2006, Venom was introduced to the fans in “Spider-Man 3” as Topher Grace portrayed the evil Spider-Man look-alike, humanly known as Eddie Brock. Considered one of the greatest threats to humanity in the Spider-Man universe, the villain is a sentient alien with a liquid-like form which requires a human host to survive. By bonding itself to the host, it gives its host enhanced power to form a super-villain.
Avi Arad and Marvel are producing the movie. Ross will also take a part in producing. He is also scripting “Spider-Man 4” for Sony.
