There Can Only Be One Highlander but Director Justin Lin Wants a Remake

22 September 2009 2:23 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Highlander” is such a delightfully silly movie.  Christopher Lambert’s Swiss accent, original songs by Queen, Clancy Brown decapitating folks as he makes his way through the story, and Sean Connery all make for a movie that is cheesy 80s action but through a camp-fantasy filter.  You can’t really call it a “franchise” because that implies that anything after the first film was successful.  The biggest success following “Highlander” was that the title of the sequel had the sub-title, “The Quickening”.

And now “Fast & Furious” director Justin Lin wants to remake it.  Hit the jump to read the full press release and why this remake could work but not because of Justin Lin.

Sure, the “Fast/Furious” movies are dumb but next to “Highlander” they look like an in-depth documentary about the world of modified cars and the culture of street racing.  Screenwriters Art Marcum and Matt Holloway wrote …

Liv Tyler in Talks for Neuromancer

11 May 2009 9:29 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

It's been a while since we heard anything about the upcoming film adaptation of William Gibson's classic cyberpunk novel Neuromancer. Joseph Kahn (Torque) is slated to direct, with Hayden Christensen rumoured to be playing the lead [1]. This week it appears that we finally have a small update on the project. The good news is it's still happening... the bad news is that Liv Tyler is in talks to star. I hate to say it, but this movie is definitely shaping up to be a bit of a disaster. A lot of fans were upset when it was first announced that Kahn would be directing the film, and although I haven't seen Torque, based on some of his commercial work I wasn't quite ready to write him off. The Hayden Christensen report further annoyed some folks, but still I held out hope for the project (I don't hold Christensen solely …

Writing the Afterburn

29 January 2009 2:41 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

The post-apocalyptic comic Afterburn is being adapted to feature film by producer/webslinger Tobey Maguire and noise machine Neal Moritz (of Stealth, XXX and Fast And Furious infamy), and now the project has a writer. Matt Johnson is working on the script, and this makes me happy for a couple of reasons: he wrote Into The Blue and Torque. While Blue is a guilty pleasure (if only for bikini Alba and the underwater flaying of Josh Brolin), I firmly believe Torque is an inspired work of …

Scribe Nabbed for Afterburn

29 January 2009 1:48 AM, PST | DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news »

Red 5 Comics’ Afterburn is making its way to the big screen, and this morning THR has learned that Matt Johnson (Torque, Into the Blue) has been tapped to pen the screenplay.

For those not familiar, Afterburn is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which the entire Eastern Hemisphere has been destroyed by a solar flare, leaving what life remains mutated and twisted. A group of treasure hunters enter this wasteland to find priceless treasures and artifacts and have to deal with mutants, rival hunters, and pirates.

Sounds like it could be a helluva lot of fun if done properly, no? Relativity Media is producing alongside Neal Mortiz’s Original Films and Toby Maquire’s Maguire Entertainment. If none of that matters to you, just focus on the fact that this’ll be filled with irradiated monstrosities, something we’ve not seen on the big screen for a while!

Matt Johnson to Write Afterburn Comic Book Adaptation

28 January 2009 11:30 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Into the Blue and Torque screenwriter Matt Johnson has been hired to adapt a big screen version of the Red 5 comic book Afterburn for producers Tobey Maguire and Neil Moritz (I Am Legend, xXx). No director has been attached.

The sci-fi comic book follows a group of treasure-hunters for hire in the future who “recover” exotic valuables from an Earth half-destroyed by a devastating solar flare, which has left a wily world roamed by mutants, rival pirates and assorted derelicts.. Described as “Indiana Jones meets Mad Max, but instead of ancient artifacts in cob-webbed temples in traditional pulp adventure” the characters raid more contemporary treasures from felled museums. For instance, in the first issue the team must claim the Mona Lisa from a Louve in shambles. Sounds like an interesting concept, but Johnson’s credits thus are far from confidence inducing.
