What Has Werner Herzog Done Now?

It seems like Werner Herzog never sleeps. The 67-year-old Bavarian buccaneer of cinema astounded hungry-eyed cinephiles back in 2005 when he had four documentary features in theaters ("The White Diamond," "Wheel of Time," the decade best "Grizzly Man" and the sci-fi quasi doc "Wild Blue Yonder"). This fall, Herzog's again kept our senses busy with back-to-back narratives: first up was "The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans," a hilariously addled live-action Nicolas Cage cartoon destined for the cult classics shelf.
Equally nervy is "My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done," which Herzog himself has called "a horror film without the blood, chainsaws and gore." Loosely based on the real story of Mark Yavorsky -- a University of San Diego grad student who killed his mother with an antique sword -- this ominous if sensitive portrait of mental illness stars "Revolutionary Road" Oscar nominee Michael Shannon, here renamed Brad McCullum.

Likely no one was surprised when it was announced that A Memory Of Light, the planned final entry in Robert Jordan’s mega-bestselling Wheel Of Time fantasy series, was so large that it had be split into three volumes. Jordan died in 2007, leaving the then-11-book saga incomplete, but even before his death, the Wot had bogged down in needlessly complex plotting and a dearth of forward momentum. Brandon Sanderson, the fantasy writer Jordan’s wife selected to finish the tale of the Dragon Reborn and his battle against the Dark One, has an unenviable task; working from Jordan’s

The Los Angeles Times has an informative update on the "fourth" film in each of these fantasy franchises: Pirates of the Caribbean, the works of Tolkien, Spider-man, and X-Men.
James Cameron is an insane genius (and, it sounds like, a bit full of himself). A great New Yorker profile of the filmmaker, and an another interesting piece on how the revolutionary CGI effects in his upcoming Avatar were done.
By contrast, Terry Gilliam thinks 3-D and other expensive effects tend to corrupt movies: "You're not there to disturb people when you're given 200 million dollars -- you're there to reassure them." God, I love that man.
The Gathering Storm (the first book in the trilogy conclusion to The Wheel of Time) debuts at #1 this week on the New York Times and Publishers Weekly bestseller fiction hardcover lists, #2 on the Washington Post list, and #4 on the combined USA Today list.

J.J. Abrams Leaves The Dark Tower

J.J. Abrams finally said no to a project. Unfortunately, MTV Movies is reporting that project was an adaptation of Stephen King’s wildly popular The Dark Tower series that he and Damon Lindelof were previously attached to. While Abrams cited his reluctance to delve into a new story immediately after finishing Lost, Lindelof mentioned the difficulty of adapting an immensely popular work. “Having seen Zack [Snyder] go through what he went through on Watchmen in terms of saying where can I digress from the material, I just get headaches from changing anything,” he said. Hear that fanboys and fangirls? Your reputation for intense scrutiny has gotten so bad it’s scaring people away from good projects. Keep it up and you can kiss that Wheel of Time adaptation goodbye.

The Gathering Storm, the 12th book in The Wheel of Time series -- the first in a "trilogy" finale -- will be released today.
The book is by Brandon Sanderson, chosen to complete the series by the widow of original author Robert Jordan and Tor Books, the publisher of the series.
Sanderson worked from Jordan's notes in writing the book.
The publisher has apparently embargoed preview copies, so there are no industry reviews, although several fansites have weighed in with praise.
The book is currently #7 on Amazon.com.
Below, find video interviews from the publisher with the author and Jordan's widow.
(Incidentally, is it just me, or is that a really bad cover?)

Many fantasy fans have been wondering what to expect from Brandon Sanderson since he was chosen from relative obscurity to complete Robert Jordan’s mega-bestselling Wheel Of Time series. So it’s worth noting how much his newest standalone fantasy novel, Warbreaker, is focused on expectations. The characters are constantly forced to reexamine their images of themselves, their roles in the world, and the other individuals around them as the story itself plays with readers’ impressions of what’s going on.
Set in a world where people periodically return from death to be worshipped as gods, and magic users can
