Why Superman Is On Hold

8 hours ago | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

We've talked about this on the site before, but here's a pretty good rundown on why the Superman franchise is in (inexplicable) limbo right now.The project is on hold as the studio waits to emerge from legal limbo over the fate of the Superman heirs. It’s about who controls what divided rights going forward and who owes what to whom when. Warners may be trying to settle with the Siegel and Shuster families, who in 2013 will retrieve the copyright of the Superman material published in Detective Comics’ Action Comics Vol. 1, in order to merge all the Superman rights. As the studio is waiting to resolve the legal dispute, there’s no movement on the project. Production execs at Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have been culling the various pitches that have come in, and are eager to start development on a sequel. Who knew, when Brandon Routh played »

‘Superman’ Continues to Face Legal Kryptonite

14 hours ago | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

The Superman franchise continues to struggle as more details emerge from Warner Brothers.  In short, Warner Brothers still isn’t doing anything with the project. According to Warner Brothers insiders:

“The studio is still seeking the right direction. No writers are working on a Superman script. ‘We’re working on a strategy for DC,’ says one Warners exec. ‘Superman is the trickiest one to figure out.’ “

Still “seeking the right direction”? No writers? Tricky to figure out? How “tricky” can this be?  You only have several movies and hundreds of comics to draw inspiration from. Get it together Warner Brothers.

Now, there is the legal matter to deal with which is rather tricky. I can appreciate the fact WB wants these legalities with the Siegel Estate put to rest but seriously, get moving. Providing some indication that you’re actively developing a new movie could certainly help your case instead of simply squandering time. »

Superman Locked in WB's Fortress of Solitude

26 November 2009 6:27 AM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

There is an inescapable point at the end of a new article by Anne Thompson relating to Superman. After several paragraphs devoted to the big black hole of movie nothingness the world's most famous comic book character finds himself in at the moment, Thompson says pointedly that people still care about the character, and that no matter what happens over the next couple years, that alone should indicate we'll get a meaningful attempt to recapture their interest in the megaplexes.

For me, the climate just isn't right for Superman. It's true that, as Thompson argues, you can make the Man of Steel darker. But I don't know if Warner Bros. would be doing itself any favors taking that road. It's certainly risky, although if there's one thing Superman Returns definitely lacked, it was a sense of danger. But I think the overriding expectation is for Superman to be a superman, »

Warner Bros. still looking for more ‘Superman’

26 November 2009 6:25 AM, PST | ReelLoop.com | See recent Reel Loop news »

Warner Bros. has had to tread lightly with talks of pursuing a follow-up to Superman Returns. News of a reboot of the series along with potentially talking an extended break on production of any Man of Steel feature has dominated Super-news.

Warner’s goal is to settle with the Siegel and Schuster families then work out a deal with them to merge all the Superman rights into a “collective.” Warner now seems to want to movie forward with a Superman film and is reportedly “eager.” The studio has been receiving a flood of pitches though no writer is assigned to the project and won’t be until their shenanigans in the courts are wrapped up.

The studio is still seeking the right direction. No writers are working on a Superman script. “We’re working on a strategy for DC,” says one Warners exec. “Superman is the trickiest one to figure out. »

Superman Franchise Finds Lawsuits as Debilitating as Kryptonite

25 November 2009 6:39 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Who knew that after all these years it wouldn’t be Lex Luthor who ultimately stopped Superman but legal disputes?  According to Anne Thopmson, Warner Brothers wants to do a complete reboot of the series but they need settle with the families of Superman creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster because the families will regain the copyright in 2013.  If Warners can work out a deal with the Siegel and Shuster families, then they could merge all the rights and confidently restart the series without worrying about losing the sequels.  Sequels is why we’re experiencing this delay.  As lucrative as a new movie could be, it won’t matter if Warners loses the sequels because even the ridiculous success of this year’s Star Trek which resurrected the franchise, pretty much broke even after all the legal wrangling necessary and investment to get the Enterprise flying again.  But because the »

Needed: A good Superman idea. For those of you wondering what’s happening with the next iteration of Superman, which has been stalled for years now since the Bryan Singer 2006 revamp Superman Returns was deemed not entirely worthy, I have the answer. Kevin Spacey Would Be "Delighted" to Play Lex Luthor Again

24 November 2009 8:31 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Even though Bryan Singer's Superman Returns grossed $390 million worldwide, it is still considered a failure by many. Critics often compare it to Warner's other top superhero property, The Dark Knight, which grossed more than $1 billion and had a smaller production budget.

Still, Superman topped the list of a recent MTV poll that asked which DC Comics character should be fast-tracked to the big screen next. In a recent interview with MTV, Kevin Spacey said that he would be "delighted" to reprise the role of Lex Luthor in a sequel to Superman Returns.

If I ran Warner Brothers I could tell you definitively we'd be making that movie. But I don't, and they haven't called me to tell me. Literally, all I know is what I've heard from press reports. I can't even confirm whether those are true or not because I haven't spoken to Bryan.

Kevin Spacey Says He'd Make 'Superman Returns' Sequel If He Ran Warner Bros.

24 November 2009 5:31 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

"Superman Returns" raised a lot of questions about what kind of sequel might follow the 2006 film and who would come back, as well as whether Warner Brothers would simply start from scratch with the next film about the Man of Steel. "Ninja Assassin" director James McTeigue was once rumored to replace Bryan Singer, but DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson recently said the company doesn't "have any current plans for Superman."

Well, Kevin Spacey doesn't have any Superman plans either, but that doesn't mean he wouldn't return to the role of Lex Luthor.

"If I ran Warner Brothers I could tell you definitively we’d be making that movie," Spacey told MTV News. "But I don’t, and they haven’t called me to tell me."

The "Men Who Stare at Goats" star sounds like he's in the same boat Superman fans are, waiting to read a headline with some good news. »

Kevin Spacey Wants 'Superman Returns' Sequel

23 November 2009 9:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Kevin Spacey wants another crack at killing the Man of Steel.

Now if only Warner Brothers would bite. Recently, the star of The Usual Suspects and American Beauty stated that if he had his way, he’d be reprising the role of Lex Luthor for a Superman Returns follow-up.

"If I ran Warner Brothers I could tell you definitively we’d be making that movie," Spacey said. "But I don’t, and they haven’t called me to tell me."

The 2006 superhero adaptation was heavily-hyped, but not a big money-maker. For a while, Ninja Assassin director James McTeigue had expressed an interest in replacing director Bryan Singer, and subsequently rebooting the franchise.

But DC Entertainment President Diane Nelson recently said the company does not have "any current plans for Superman," and McTeigue has moved on, claiming executives are unsure what direction to take the franchise.

Trading DVD2Blu Not So Lucrative

23 November 2009 3:41 PM, PST | JustPressPlay.net | See recent JustPressPlay news »

Warner Brothers has launched a new service that sounds fantastic on paper but turns out to be useless in practice. On DVD2Blu.com, for a low price, you can trade up your old DVD for the Blu-ray equivalent. Sounds good, right? Except you're limited to only 55 barebones releases to select from, and you have to pay additional shipping and tax to get it delivered to you in 5 weeks. It adds up to not being worth the effort.

A standard order of one title will set you back $7.95 + $4.95 in shipping, for a total of $12.90. Some of the newer/biger releases (Body of Lies, Speed Racer, Superman Returns) are $9.95 a piece, for a total of $14.90. Not including tax, depending on where you are. The website says that you get free shipping if your order is more than $25, but that number is obviously a con, since in order to pass $25, you'd have »

James McTeigue talks Ninja Assassin, Raven, Superman

21 November 2009 10:00 AM, PST | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Fellow film blogger Alex Billington at FirstShowing.net has conducted an insightful interview with Wachowski Brothers’ protege, James McTeigue. As well as answering questions about Ninja Assassin and why he opted for CG blood, he talks about his first film V for Vendetta, his upcoming project The Raven, a bit about his filmmaking background, but most interestingly about his thoughts on his proposed Superman movie.

McTeigue states that he would want to make substantial changes to the traditional Superman mythology in order to update the character so he can exist in modern society. After the disappointment that was Superman Returns, all the legal problems between the various owners of the Superman property, and Diane Nelson (head of newly formed DC Entertainment) announcing that any proposed Superman films are currently on hold, things are not looking too good for The Man of Steel.

All legal issues aside, I do believe that »

Brandon Routh and Martha MacIsaac Exploit Twilight’s Menstruation Loophole for Comedy

20 November 2009 1:32 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It’s unnecessary to poke fun at Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon because both films are funny (albeit unintentionally) enough on their own.  However, parody of these silly movies is always appreciated.  Earlier this week, Conan O’Brien had a very special message for parents as he warned them of some of the risqué behavior in New Moon.

Today, Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) and Martha MacIsaac (Superbad) have a goddamn hilarious send-up of an overlooked question of the Twilight series as well as other vampire-human romance stories: wouldn’t menstrual blood drive vampires insane?  And how could you keep your dumb romance alive if your vamp boyfriend literally wanted to kill you during your period?  The painfully hilarious answers to these questions are after the jump.

What X-Men 3 Could Have Been

Mike Dougherty, director of the long-delayed and mistreated Trick ‘r Treat and co-writer of X-Men 2 joined the /Filmcast over the weekend and in their special “After Dark” segment, where they talk about whatever’s on their mind, their conversation hit on the interesting subject of X-Men 3, for which Dougherty and Singer were not a part of, but would have been had Singer not swung over to DC to make Superman Returns (for which Dougherty helped write).

In the audio clip, Dave Chen, Adam Quigley and Devindra Hardawar bring up the subject the X3 and quiz Dougherty on his thoughts of the movie, for which he answered reservedly and professionally. The interesting parts however, came afterward, when Dougherty moved on to explain some of the ideas he pitched to Bryan Singer for what of been their version of the third installment of the X-Men film franchise.

Upgrade Your Warner DVDs to Blu-ray for as Low as $7.95

17 November 2009 11:02 AM, PST | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Warner Home Video just announced a new program where you can upgrade several of your DVD titles to Blu-ray for as low as $7.95, and right now the price doesn't go any higher than $9.95. This is a similar program to the Red2Blu offer they made allowing customers to upgrade their HD DVD titles to Blu-ray, a program I actually took advantage of and loved it as a result.

The process to upgrade is simple. Consumers select the titles they want to upgrade on DVD2Blu.com, mail in their standard DVDs with pre-paid postage and a short time later receive copies of the same film on Blu-ray Disc. Consumers who place orders over $25 will receive free shipping. For a complete list of titles visit DVD2Blu.com, but I have included the most recent list of titles and prices directly below. 10,000 B.C. Warner Bros. Launches DVD to Blu-ray Upgrade Program

17 November 2009 10:57 AM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Warner Bros. has announced a DVD to Blu-ray upgrade program.  While the list doesn’t include all their titles, it’s at least a start.  According to WB, the process to upgrade is simple.  Consumers select the titles they want to upgrade on DVD2Blu.com, mail in their standard DVDs with pre-paid postage and a short time later receive copies of the same film on Blu-ray Disc.  If you mail in one DVD, it’s $7.95 plus shipping.  If you order more than $25, you’ll receive free shipping.

While some people haven’t been converted to Blu-ray, I’m all in.  I think the picture quality is amazing on Blu-ray and I definitely see a difference between DVD and the HD format.  All I can say is, if you have an 1080p TV, the format is absolutely worth the investment.  For a complete list of what WB is willing to »
