Ridley Scott & Universal Unleash Robin Hood Trailer

16 December 2009 3:55 AM, PST | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Haven’t heard much about Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood for a while, perhaps it’s been lost amidst the buzz of Ridley’s myriad other projects — including the Monopoly Movie, an Alien prequel, etc.  Anyway, Universal’s released a teaser trailer, available via TrailerAddict.

Universal promises ‘the true story behind the legend’ — a strategy that worked wonder’s for Antoine Fuqua’s magnum opus, King Arthur, five years ago (wow, has it really been that long?).  Scripted by Brian Helgeland, there’s plenty of room for optimism when one looks at the strong cast Scott’s assembled (Mark StrongDanny HustonCate Blanchett!) to back Russell Crowe. The notion is also made exciting by Scott’s recent track record with historical epics (if you haven’t seen the Director’s Cut of Kingdom of Heaven, you honestly haven’t seen the film).

Anything that postpones Monopoly is fine with us. …

Knightley 'Poses Nude For Artist'

14 December 2009 4:16 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

British actress Keira Knightley has reportedly stripped off to pose naked for an acclaimed artist.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actress, who bared all to film a bath scene with Sienna Miller in their 2008 movie The Edge of Love, has allegedly been shedding her clothes during sessions at London's Halcyon Gallery for Mitch Griffiths.

A source tells The Mail on Sunday, "It’s considered a great honour to be painted by Mitch. He is a highly respected nude painter and is painting a number of subjects for an exhibition next year. He is delighted Keira agreed to take part."

Last year body-proud Knightley demanded that promotional adverts for her 2008 movie The Duchess were left untouched after the promos for 2004's King Arthur were changed to enhance her breasts. …

Ray Stevenson Talks Fat Volstagg in Thor

11 December 2009 8:32 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Ray Stevenson made his mark playing Titus Pullo in the incredible Rome series, but he also made a splash earlier this year playing the title character of Frank Castle in Punisher: War Zone. Unfortunately the film was a bit of a disaster critically and at the box office but he was perfectly cast and did his job right.

Stevenson has also played some cool characters in King Arthur and Outpost among many others, but the best is yet to come as we’ll be seeing a lot more of the growing star in the next few years with him being cast and working on a few big films including a role in the Denzel Washington starrer, The Book of Eli. For the Rome fans out there, a feature film based after the series is also in development so we can expect to see Titus Pullo back in action yet again. …

Plot Summary: Burned out veteran Eddie Dugan (Richard Gere) is just one week away from his pension and a fishing cabin in Connecticut. Narcotics officer Sal Procida (Ethan Hawke) has discovered there’s no line he won’t cross to provide a better life for his long-suffering wife and seven children. Brooklyn's Finest gets a trailer

4 December 2009 3:44 AM, PST | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

The trailer for Antoine Fuqua's new film has hit the web. Brooklyn's Finest appears to cover similar ground to Fuqua's Training Day, which is no bad thing. The film follows three New York cops whose loyalties and morals are tested over the space of seven days. It looks like it could be a return to form for Fuqua after so-so movies Tears of the Sun, King Arthur and Shooter. Cheesy voiceover-man aside, the trailer shows a lot of promise, and looks like Ethan Hawke could deliver another decent performance for Fuqua. It might...

How Hollywood destroyed our classical legends

3 December 2009 2:05 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

It took a millennium for western civilisation to create a canon of classical literature – but just 10 years for Hollywood to destroy it

When I think back on this decade's spate of movies based on the great legends of European history, I remember how fantastically it started – with Gladiator – and how badly things went downhill after that: with Kingdom of Heaven, Troy, 300 and Beowulf. When I saw Gladiator in 2000, I thought this was going to be just the best millennium ever. It had everything you could want in a movie: glory, gore, guts, gladiators. It was a sweeping epic with a computer-generated cast of thousands. Augustus Caesar would have been proud of it. Julius and Tiberius, too.

Yet the thing I liked most about Ridley Scott's superb film was how closely it hewed to the historical record, in its portrayal of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) as the depraved son of Marcus Aurelius, …

Brooklyn's Finest trailer

For screenwriter Michael C. Martin's first produced script Brooklyn's Finest, he got quite the casting jackpot. The intertwining tale of Brooklyn cops lured in Ethan Hawke, Richard Gere, Don Cheadle and Wesley Snipes (!!), not to mention more familiar faces like Will Patton, Ellen Barkin, Lili Taylor, Vincent D'Onofrio and that guy who's on "FlashForward." The movie comes from Antoine Fuqua, who seems to be evading Director Jail since Training Day (despite King Arthur and Shooter). …

Following several actors who have been previously confirmed to join "Thor", Kat Dennings also has a part in the film. The news was first spilled by the film's star Natalie Portman when she was interviewed by MTV Splash Page. "Well I'm really excited. Kat Dennings is going to be in it with me and she's a good friend and an amazing actress, so I'm looking forward to that," the depicter of Thor's first love Jane Foster said.

Dennings' inclusion in the cast ensemble for the film was later confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. However, there has been no word on what character that will be played by the 23-year-old beauty as the site claimed Marvel Studio keeps a closed lid on her role.

Dennings is perhaps best known for her role as Norah Silverberg in "Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist", which aided her to receive nomination as Breakthrough Performance Female at 2009 MTV Movie Awards. …

Antoine Fuqua, Spike Lee Together on 'Miss'

18 November 2009 11:10 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Who says there’s better living through crime? Antoine Fuqua and Spike Lee, that’s who.

Fuqua, who has directed films ranging from the crime thriller Training Day to the adventure saga King Arthur, will be directing an adaptation of "Miss: Better Living Through Crime", a French graphic novel. The book revolves around a poor white girl and a black pimp — named Nola and Slim, respectively — who partner up as killers-for-hire in early 1900’s New York.

Spike Lee, the groundbreaking director of such films as Do the Right Thing, Jungle Fever and He Got Game, will serve as executive producer, Variety reports. Lee’s most recent film was the 2008 war movie Miracle at St. Anna.

Fuqua’s latest, Brooklyn’s Finest starring Richard Gere, Don Cheadle and Ethan Hawke, will be released next March.

Miss will be produced through Vigilante Entertainment, and John Ridley, who wrote the upcoming World War …

John Woo Not Directing Caliber, Has no Interest in Superhero Movies

18 November 2009 9:50 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Remember that announced movie based on the comic book called “Caliber”, that re-imagined King Arthur and his knights as gunfighters instead of, well, knights? Word was, John Woo was coming onboard to direct the film, but that was over a year ago. According to Woo, who is currently in the States promoting his “Red Cliff” martial arts epic, the time was never right for him to direct the movie, and from the sounds of it, it doesn’t look like he’ll be going anywhere near anything that can be called a “superhero movie” in the future. Curiously, Woo cites his aversion to superhero movies being their general lack of believability, that he prefers to do movies that are more “realistic”. Which begs the question: how realistic were any of John’s Hong Kong movies? You had one guy with two guns running around shooting about 200 bad guys in one locale. …

Spike Lee And Antoine Fuqua To Adapt 'Miss: Better Living Through Crime'

18 November 2009 7:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Critically acclaimed filmmakers Spike Lee and Antoine Fuqua will adapt Philippe Thirault, Marc Riou and Mark Vigouroux’ graphic novel "Miss: Better Living Through Crime" for Vigilante Entertainment.

Originally published by French comic publisher Humanoids, “Miss” is a crime thriller set in the 1920s that follows an unusual partnership between two killers for hire: a poor white girl named Nola who becomes a tough femme fatale and Slim, an African-American pimp from Harlem. “Miss” was also published in the U.S. in 2002.

According to Variety, Fuqua will direct “Miss” while Lee is onboard as an executive producer along with Pierre Spengler, Fabrice Giger and Vigilante Entertainment founder Hicham Benkirane. The project is currently being shopped around to film studios.

Lee is widely known for films like “Do the Right Thing”, “Malcolm X” and “Get on the Bus,” while Fuqua’s best-known film is “Training Day” — which earned Denzel Washington the …

Antoine Fuqua and Spike Lee Team Up for Adaptation of Graphic Novel Miss: Better Living Through Crime

17 November 2009 10:39 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It’s been twenty years since Do the Right Thing but Spike Lee has continued to grow and innovate as a filmmaker, pushing himself to work outside his comfort zone while never completely leaving his deep-seated convictions about race in America.

It’s been eight years since Training Day but Antoine Fuqua has yet to make another successful film and even Training Day succeeded more because of Denzel Washington than because of Fuqua’s direction.  While he did receive positive notices for his most recent film Brooklyn’s Finest, which played at Sundance earlier this year, it’s been a long dry spell for Fuqua.  Can he finally up his game by joining forces with Lee?  Their collaboration in adapting the graphic novel Miss: Better Living Through Crime may answer that question.  Hit the jump for details.

Here’s what Variety has to say about the source material:

Dff: An Evening With Ed Harris

14 November 2009 4:27 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

It's always very strange to see actors out of costume, dropping character, and sitting in front of you for a Q&A. This is especially true of an actor like Ed Harris, who has such a distinctive voice and presence that it's pretty odd to see him begging Kleenex from the audience so he can remove the fingerprints off his latest award. The man who seems so cool and collected in front of the camera (think of A History of Violence, Nixon, Gone Baby Gone, or any film where he's been unflappably tough) admitted that he lacked social skills, and was dreading the dinner to follow because he never knows what to say.

Well, for not knowing what to say, he still managed to be a very entertaining presence for an hour. When asked when he realized he was "pretty good" at acting, he cited an Oklahoma City production of …

Clive Owen Gets Back

By

Alex Simon

Clive Owen is one of those actors that keep surprising you. Just when you think the audience, and the Hollywood establishment, has pegged him as an action hero, a leading man, or a romantic comedy pin-up, Owen pulls an about-face and does something unexpected.

It all started October 3, 1964 in Coventry, England. Owen’s father, a country music singer, abandoned the family when he was just three. His mother later remarried, with Clive and his four brothers raised by his mother and stepfather, who worked for British Rail. Owen has characterized those early years as "rough." A self-described “solidly working class” kid, Owen was bitten by the acting bug at age 13 and followed his dream to The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art several years later. Initially cutting his teeth on high-profile British television programs such as “Chancer” and “Sharman,” as well as art house …
