The Best Films of the Decade (aka "The Naughties")

Best Films Of The Decade (aka The Naughties) From Alex & Terry

List # 1

By Alex Simon

When Terry and I initially discussed writing these lists, I had a tough time thinking back on 20 films over the past decade which I was really taken with, thinking that movies have sunk so low over the past ten years, that even choosing a dozen would be a short-order job. Thirty minutes into it, my list had nearly 60 titles! After much cutting, pasting, and re-cutting and pasting, here are my top 20 films (in no particular order) of the first decade of the 21st century, dubbed by many as “the naughties.” --A.S.

1.No Country for Old Men (Coen Brothers, 2007) An elegiac blend of stark beauty and full-throttle despair from two of our finest filmmakers, set in the contemporary American West. Every frame is damn near flawless, and would have been an even more perfect vehicle for the late Sam Peckinpah. »

What are the best music videos of the noughties?

24 December 2009 3:07 AM, PST | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

Let us know your favourite pop promos of the decade

What makes a great pop video? Explosive action? Mind-bending animation? Bling? Bottles of Cristal? Being ripped off in the latest TV advert? One viewer's masterpiece is another's dross, and they will never agree.

And there are simply more videos now than there used to be. In the 70s and 80s, quality videos stood out because there wasn't much else around – Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Jacko's Thriller and Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer were events. Now videos cram every corner of YouTube, blogs and TV channels from Viva to MTV.

In the noughties, having a director for your video wasn't enough – they had to be a big name. Hype Williams was one of the busiest, shooting videos such as Kanye West's Gold Digger and Stronger, Beyoncé's Check on It and Coldplay's Viva La Vida. Other directors such as Mark Romanek »

Top 10 Dramas of the Decade

24 December 2009 2:38 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The ReelzChannel 100 began when we asked Leonard Maltin for his favorite Hidden Gems of the decade. His list led the web team into a general discussion about the best movies of the decade and — after no small amount of debate, arguing, and (we're not proud to say) some petty name-calling — we decided we'd better bring it to an end with a company-wide vote. Then it was just a matter of tallying up the votes and hoping for the best. Lucky for us, ReelzChannel is filled with a staff ranging from movie lovers to movie fanatics. What turned out isn't what you'll find on a critic's best of list — instead it's what movie fans really enjoyed.

In day four of the ReelzChannel 100, we highlight the Top 10 Dramas of the Decade.

Knight and Day Trailer Starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz

23 December 2009 11:44 AM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

I know what you're thinking... oh great, Tom Cruise in another spy movie. With Cameron Diaz. Mission: Impossible meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith, right? Well, not quite. After watching the trailer for Knight and Day, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the storyline wasn't entirely what I expected. It seems Cameron Diaz is just an innocent woman who happens to cross paths with a secret agent, and then gets dragged along for the ride. I was prepared to roll my eyes, but the tone of the movie is light and comedic, and the action still looks solid. This is the kind of action comedy I want to see... not Date Night with some crazy car chases added in! Although Tom Cruise still seems to be in a lot of people's shit books these days, he's still making good movies, and this looks like another perfect role for him if you ask me. »

The Notable Films of 2010: Part Five

23 December 2009 10:10 AM, PST | Dark Horizons | See recent Dark Horizons news »

Hippie Hippie Shake

Opens: 2010

Cast: Cillian Murphy, Sienna Miller, Max Minghella, Emma Booth, Lee Ingleby

Director: Beeban Kidron

Summary: Follows the love story of Oz editor Richard Neville and Louise Ferrier. Neville and his cohorts launch the London edition of Oz amidst the 1960s counterculture and are subsequently put on trial for distributing a sexually explicit issue.

Analysis: One of the most troubled productions in Working Title's history, 'Hippie' began development back in 1998 but failed to get beyond script stage both in 1999 and in 2002 when "Elizabeth" helmer Shekhar Kapur was attached to direct. Filming finally got underway late 2007 with director Beeban Kidron in charge and shooting seemed to proceed without issue aside from feminist author Germaine Greer being vehemently unhappy about being depicted on film.

Actually the film scored quite a bit of free press for a skinny dipping scene where full-frontal shots of actress Sienna Miller shooting the sequence »

Brilliant New Trailer For Knight & Day

22 December 2009 6:14 PM, PST | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

A fantastic new trailer has been released for what can only be described as a cross between Mission Impossible and a romantic comedy – Knight & Day, starring Hollywood heavyweights, Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. The film is directed by “Walk The Line” and “3:10 To Yuma” director, James Mangold.

In the film, Cruise plays an Ethan Hunt-esque type character, while Diaz is an unwitting member of the public who finds herself caught up in his latest mission. The dialogue is pretty classy, with some funny one-liners and the kind of script you’d expect from a rom-com and the action is looking pretty swish too. Check out the trailer below:

An action-comedy centered on a fugitive couple (Cruise and Diaz) on a glamorous and sometimes deadly adventure where nothing and no one – even themselves – are what they seem. Amid shifting alliances and unexpected betrayals, they race across the globe, with their »

‘Knight and Day’ Trailer Goes Online

22 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

The very first trailer for Knight and Day, the Cameron Diaz, Tom Cruise action movie that we showed you the poster for the other day is now online. With James Mangold (Walk the Line) directing the film, it looks to be a great action-comedy with both Cruise and Diaz looking like they’re having a good time.

Seeing these two actors together for the first time since Vanilla Sky, I’m reminded of the chemistry they had on-screen; and it’s fully evident again here. The trailer’s funny moments seem to be a continuation of Cruise not taking himself so seriously, much like in Tropic Thunder – which really helped to lighten the atmosphere around him, after all the Scientology and “Katie-gate” snafus.

Of course, the comedy meeting the action scenes make this seem like a perfect match for everyone involved. Diaz is showing her comedic side, such as she did in her hits, »

Tom Cruise Returns to Action in 'Knight and Day' Trailer

22 December 2009 12:02 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

For those of you disappointed that Tom Cruise bailed on the upcoming action film Salt (Angelina Jolie took his place), we've got the trailer for the equally ridiculous-looking spy thriller Knight & Day (formerly Wichita), courtesy of E! Online. The movie reunites Cruise with his Vanilla Sky costar Cameron Diaz in a plot about a lovelorn woman romanced by a secret agent. And against her wishes, she ends up involved in his latest mission. On paper it sounds like 27 Dresses meets Mission: Impossible (with a little Bourne Identity mixed in), and unfortunately there's not much shown in this spot to make it look any better than that.

Given that it's directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line; 3:10 to Yuma) and features the always appealing Peter Sarsgaard, I'm trying to overlook the sitcom-friendly title, contrived premise and, most of all, Cruise's smiley performance, which seems to combine Ethan Hunt with Jerry Maguire. »

Knight And Day Trailer Is Here

Coming off as a cross between a Mission: Impossible movie and a high concept rom com, the first trailer for Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz' big cinematic reunion, Knight And Day, has arrived on the web.Directed by 3:10 To Yuma/Walk The Line's James Mangold, the film finds former Vanilla Sky co-stars Cruise and Diaz in what the official synopsis suggests is a glamorous and sometimes deadly adventure where nothing and no one – even themselves – are what they seem. Amid shifting alliances and unexpected betrayals, they race across the globe, with their survival ultimately hinging on the battle of truth vs. trust.”On screen, that boils down to the pair meeting when Cruise takes out a plane-load of bad guys and keeps intruding on Diaz's live, to the somewhat shocked reaction of those around her, like pal Marc Blucas. Not everything about the promo works, but Cruise is back to his twinkly, »

‘Knight & Day’ Trailer Starring Cruise & Diaz

22 December 2009 4:13 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The very first trailer for 20th Century Fox’s Knight & Day, an action-comedy starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, has finally been released along with the film’s first poster from a few days back.

There hasn’t been much news surrounding this film despite its high profile cast other than its name change from “Wichita” back in October to what we now know the movie as.

Knight & Day is directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma) off a Patrick O’Neill script. Joining Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz are Maggie Grace, Peter Sarsgaard, Paul Dano, Marc Blucas, Olivier Martinez and Viola Davis.

Here’s a brief synopsis from Variety if you are unfamiliar with Knight & Day:

“Cruise plays a man of mystery who links up with Diaz. They become fugitives, there are betrayals and shifting alliances all around them, and they must figure out whether to »

Knight & Day Trailer

22 December 2009 2:25 AM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma) is directing a new action film called Knight & Day, which stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz as a fugitive couple who have adventures about trust and betrayal and all that. The concept probably isn’t as important as the way in which it’s portrayed, and the trailer below should convey much of what the film is about. I kind of like the humor, which is a prerequisite for glib action films, but I also really like the way in which the Cruise character comes off as a con man who isn’t a trickster with the things he says (which, as you’ll see, are sometimes contradictory) but by his sheer audaciousness. The action doesn’t look bad, either. »

Knight & Day Movie Trailer

20th Century Fox has released the first teaser trailer for the new Tom Cruise action/comedy Knight & Day. Directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line / 3:10 to Yuma / Girl, Interrupted), the film centers on a fugitive couple (played by Cruise and Cameron Diaz) on a "glamorous and sometimes deadly adventure where nothing and no one – even themselves – are what they seem. Amid shifting alliances and unexpected betrayals, they race across the globe, with their survival ultimately hinging on the battle of truth vs. trust." The film also feratures Maggie Grace, Peter Sarsgaard, Marc Blucas, Paul Dano, and Viola Davis. While the comedy at moments falls flat (which is a shame, as I loved Cruise's appearance in Tropic Thunder) the Bourne-style action sequences might be enough to earn my $10. 'Knight & Day' Trailer Is Up

21 December 2009 9:45 PM, PST | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Is the world ready to embrace Tom Cruise again?

That may be an even more important question than "Will he save the world/get the girl?" in the new action/comedy Knight & Day, heretofore known as the top secret Wichita. Reunited with his Vanilla Sky co-star Cameron Diaz, Cruise appears to play a nigh-invulnerable badass who drags Diaz’ character on a globe-trotting adventure.

The action sequences look cool (there’s a motorcycle-related one that I assume is a spoof of Mission: Impossible 2), but personally, whenever I see Cruise, I half-expect him to start babbling about the joys of Scientology/myth of post-partum depression, or to jump up-and-down on a couch. I guess what I’m saying is, love him or not, I don’t know if I trust him to be my movie star anymore. But in a movie like Knight & Day, that might end up working in his favor: after all, »

First Poster and Footage from Knight And Day Starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz

Thanks to Entertainment Tonight, film geeks have gotten their first look at the upcoming action-comedy Knight and Day, starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz.  The film, directed by James Mangold (Walk The Line), follows a mismatched couple– Diaz and Cruise– as they travel the world, engaging in hijinks and various misadventures.

The film was formerly known as Wichita, but that title was abandoned following the realization that Wichita is one of the least-descriptive, audience-repelling titles ever conjured.  Knight and Day seems to fit the »

First Poster For ‘Knight and Day’

21 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Instead of getting a trailer for Piranha 3D, as reported to be attached with this week’s release of Avatar, most people got the trailer for Cameron Diaz and Tom Cruise’s upcoming action-thriller, Knight and Day. Directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line, Cop Land) and written by Patrick O’Neill, in his first produced, feature screenplay, the film is centered around Diaz and Cruise’s characters being chased around the world where “no one and nothing is what it seems – even themselves.”

The trailer was pretty funny, and looked like the 20th Century Fox film is going to feature some fantastic action including Tom Cruise crash-landing a plane to jumping from a motorcycle onto the hood of Diaz’s car. The film also features Peter Sarsgaard (Orphan and An Education), Maggie Grace (Lost, Taken), Paul Dano (There Will Be Blood) and Viola Davis (Law Abiding Citizen and Doubt). Unfortunately, »

The Decade’s Film: 2005-2009

21 December 2009 7:33 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

It had been a successful decade for the comic book movie, with that trend continuing into the latter half of the decade. Just as looked like the public demand for irradiated heroes looked to be diminishing, with lacklustre showings from the likes of Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four, out came Iron Man. Coupled with a brilliant script and an excellent performance from Robert Downey Jr as the titular zillionaire industrialist/playboy/freedom fighter/all-round genius, the end result was something truly special. Downey’s career was also revitalised, earning him a role in Tropic Thunder (which would earn him an Oscar nomination). Louis Leterrier’s The Incredible Hulk took a similar approach, this time giving Edward Norton of Fight Club fame a shot at getting under the skin of the green goliath.  They set a tough act to follow, but followed they were by one Christopher Nolan. Knight And Day Poster is Bond-errific

21 December 2009 4:39 AM, PST | WeAreMovieGeeks.com | See recent WeAreMovieGeeks.com news »

The flashy silhouettes of a dashing man and a sexy woman.  The stylish pistol the man holds as he runs from…something.  The splotches of strange color against the backdrop indicating things are about to get bloody (for someone who bleeds yellow).  Just about everything on this poster (save for Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz’s names) cries out Bond.  That’s not necessarily a bad thing.  It’s a cool poster we have above for Knight And Day, a film with a title that could almost pass as a Bond title, as well.

Nonetheless, the film is directed by James Mangold (Girl, Interrupted, Walk The Line, and 3:10 To Yuma) and also features Peter Sarsgaard.  I hope beyond hope that Sarsgaard plays the film’s villain.

The film’s official site is also live, and we are sure to have a trailer hitting very soon.  Knight And Day hits theaters on July 2nd, »
