'I Am Legend' Director To Shrink Humanity

25 November 2009 7:17 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

Word has surfaced concerning yet another project that director Francis Lawrence is developing."In the Small," which is based on a Michael Hague graphic novel, concerns a strange explosion that leaves all humans six inches tall, yet nothing else is affected. Those who survive the transition are forced to create a new social order and adjust in a world where man is no longer at the top of the food chain. As they attempt to find out what happened, humanity is faced with a new and existential threat.Regarding Lawrence's projects in development: No No and Double No on the "I am Legend" prequel. If ever there was a movie that screamed "this is a self-contained tale, leave it alone, a prequel is pointless because the meat of the story was already told and anything told before the time frame of the story is merely set up and besides we »

Francis Lawrence May Direct 'In the Small' Before 'Sgt. Rock'

23 November 2009 2:22 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

From one comic book to another. Pajiba is reporting that I Am Legend and Constantine director Francis Lawrence may end up directing an adaptation of a graphic novel called In the Small before he ends up directing the Sgt. Rock adaptation we wrote about a few weeks ago. They explain that Lawrence is attached to a lot of projects, but he doesn't have a "go project" yet, but if everything works out, he could be on In the Small, which is being produced by Akiva Goldsman. Apparently first-time writer Laura Harrington wrote a draft based on Michael Hague's graphic novel for Warner Bros. Sgt. Rock is in for rewrites, but this is ready. In the Small is about a strange explosion that leaves all humans six inches tall, yet nothing else is affected. Carl Rinsch to Direct Keanu in the Samurai Film '47 Ronin'

18 November 2009 3:33 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Carl Rinsch is a name perhaps best known to those in the advertisement world, but the commercial director has been poised to break into the feature film world for some time now. His name had been attached to direct Fox's reboot/prequel to Ridley Scott's Alien, until it became apparent that Scott wanted to direct as well as produce. All is not lost, however, as now Rinsch has been tapped to turn Keanu Reeves into a Samurai in 47 Ronin.

The project is being set up at Universal with a script from Chris Morgan, who has been earning the studio hand over fist lately with his scripts for the last two Fast & Furious movies as well as Wanted. Currently the immortal Keanu Reeves is the only actor attached to the project, meaning he's most likely to command the presumably effects-heavy film, something Reeves hasn't really done since 2005's Constantine. Sgt. Rock Coming To The Big Screen

10 November 2009 11:15 PM, PST | ShockYa | See recent ShockYa news »

According to a report by Heat Vision, Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman are producing a big-screen adaptation of “Sgt. Rock”, the WW2 comic book from DC Comics. Francis Lawrence (”I Am Legend”, “Constantine”) is directing the project, based on a script by Chad St. John (”The Days Before”). Andrew Rona of Silver Pictures is also onboard as a producer, and Kerry Foster is the project’s executive producer. Joel Silver has been trying to get the project off the ground for the past 20 years. Debuting in 1959, DC’s Sgt. Frank Rock was the leader of his WW2 infantry unit called Easy Company. He first appeared in “Our Army at War,” [...] »

Francis Lawrence Goes to War with ‘Sgt. Rock’

10 November 2009 3:30 PM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Director Francis Lawrence, who’s previous credits include I Am Legend, Constantine and TV’s Kings has picked up another directing gig. He will take on the big screen adaptation of DC’s comic character Sgt. Rock for producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman. The film, who’s previous director Guy Ritchie left to take on DC’s Lobo adaptation, will be scripted by relative newcomer Chad St. John.

Another change announced for this project is the shift from a WWII setting, where in the comics Sgt. Rock leads his “Easy Company” team of soldiers against the Nazis, to the future where, reportedly, the producers feel the film will be more universally accepted due to the comic’s current “pro-America” stance. Plus, the producers are worried about the relative box office success of a big budget WWII action film, Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds notwithstanding.

I guess both of those things make sense. »

Is Sgt. Rock Finally Happening?

10 November 2009 12:40 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Benjamin Franklin once said, “The only things certain in life are death and taxes.” Well, if the former Us President had lived to see the present day, he doubtless would have added one more thing to the list: “…and Joel Silver trying to make Sgt. Rock.”Silver has been trying to get an adaptation of the DC Comics’ World War II-based, cigar-chewing, bullet-spewing tough guy hero off the ground for as long as Empire can remember. So long, in fact, that Arnold Schwarzenegger was tipped to play Rock for a long time, and virtually every action writer worth a damn in Hollywood has taken a crack at the script, from Brian Helgeland to Steven E. DeSouza to John Milius. And all to no avail. Most recently, Guy Ritchie, of all people, took a stab at it, attaching himself to direct, before moving onto another comic book for Silver, Lobo. But »

Francis Lawrence Takes Sgt. Rock Into…the Future!

9 November 2009 11:00 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Looks like not all of Joel Silver's long-simmering DC Comics projects (er, sorry -- DC Entertainment) have been recalled. He's been moving veerrrryyy slowly on a Sgt. Rock adaptation, with a few scripts written over the years, but now finally has some forward momentum. If things go well, we might soon have a Sgt. Rock film written by Chad St. John and directed by Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend, Constantine). The character has been battling through the DC Universe since the late '50s, and became popular enough that his book Our Army at War was renamed Sgt. Rock in the late '70s. Appropriately enough, he was a WWII character, serving to shepherd a young reader's gestating image of Us soldiers in the aftermath of the Korean War, as Vietnam raged, and through the ugly fallout of the latter. It might not seem obvious, but this Sunday's 2009 Video Music Awards on MTV (coverage begins at 8pm!) is going to have a heavy Hollywood presence. Yes, yes... we all know that "Twilight" stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner will be presenting an expanded trailer for "New Moon." They're not who I'm talking about though.

See, a lot of music video directors these days have -- or soon will -- double-dip in the world of feature-length film. I'm going to be highlighting a few of them here on MTV Movies Blog in a series of Director Spotlight posts. First up is "I Am Legend" director Francis Lawrence, who's up for a Best Direction award for his work on Britney Spears' "Circus" video. Compare the video below with the "I Am Legend" trailer, embedded after the break.

British rocker Gavin Rossdale has been tapped for a guest appearance on Criminal Minds as a brutal serial killer.  How cool is that?  His criminally induced appearance is slated to show up in November in the police procedural.

Don’t fret.  This isn’t Gavin’s first fling with acting.  He’s been in How to Rob a Bank, Zoolander, Constantine & The Mayor of Sunset Strip.  Constantine… oh good, something I’ve seen!

Criminal Minds on CBS, premieres on September 23rd at 9 p.m.  I can’t wait.  This, is a Bruce Fave!

Is Gavin Rossdale the next Dexter?

9 September 2009 6:57 PM, PDT | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Stop laughing.  No seriously I mean it, stop laughing.  It was just a joke.  What's not a joke is that Rock Star Gavin Rossdale is going to be guest staring on Criminal Minds this fall.  CBS made the announcment today saying that Rossdale will be protraying a "Goth rock star who has become lost in the frightening alter-ego he portrays on stage – an alter-ego whom the Bau team suspects may be a brutal serial killer."

This won't be the first acting gig for Rossdale, who made his mark as the lead singer and songwriter for the grunge band Bush, but who has gone on to star in several movies including Constantine, Little Black Book, Game of their Lives and his most recent independent feature, How to Rob a Bank which also stars the late David Carradine.

Criminal Minds premieres on CBS on Wednesday, September 23 at 9pm (Et).  The full press »

Exclusive: 'Criminal Minds' nabs Gavin Rossdale

Here's an unusual combination: Gavin Rossdale and Criminal Minds. But the two shall meet this November when the British rocker and sometime-thespian guest stars on the CBS procedural. Rossdale will play a Goth rock star who may or may not be moonlighting as — what else? — a brutal serial killer. Rossdale's previous acting work has mostly been limited to the big screen. In addition to co-starring in the 2007 Nick Stahl-Erika Christensen heist flick How to Rob a Bank, Gwen Stefani's other half has appeared in Zoolander, Constantine, and The Mayor of Sunset Strip. "Disturbia" Movie Review

6 September 2009 9:17 PM, PDT | Reel Empire | See recent Reel Empire news »

Up and coming celebrity Shia Labeouf sure is making a name for himself in the movie business. Starting out as a troublemaking teenager gracing cable televisions across the country in the Disney sitcom 'Even Stevens', it wasn't long before Shia found his calling on the bigscreen with blockbusters including 'Constantine', 'I, Robot', and 'Holes'. Then comes 'Disturbia', a film I thought came out of nowhere. I mean, I hadn't heard of this flick a week prior to its release. »

Fox hires writer and producer to reboot Fantastic Four

1 September 2009 6:27 PM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Yesterday's announcement of Disney buying Marvel for $4billion (£2.5million) left superhero fans wondering about two key issues.

Firstly, what would happen to Marvel's existing comic book film slate; secondly, the impact on Marvel characters - such as the Fantastic Four - whose film rights are with other studios.

It 's since been revealed that Paramount will still distribute Marvel's five next superhero movies - Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Avengers and Iron Man 3 - although Disney would like to take on this role in future.

It's also confirmed that the deals for characters at other studios will stay in place under the terms set by Marvel and these other studios.

As I explained, 20th Century Fox has movie rights to X-Men, Fantastic Four and Daredevil; Universal has Namor the Sub-Mariner; and Sony has Spider-Man and Ghost Rider.

And hot on the heels of all this, and as if »

Keanu's Crime

I still have hopes for Keanu Reeves, even though I haven't been impressed by his post-Matrix offerings; I liked Constantine no matter what people say, but Lake House was just bland, Street Kings was mildly entertaining at best and Day The Earth Stood Still was every bit unnecessary as a remake could possibly get. But stepping up as a modern-day Jimmy Stewart? I'm curious. Reeves' new production shingle Company Films is developing Henry's Crime from a script by The Terminal scribe Sacha... »

Party Favors: Simon Hunter & The Mutant Chronicles

20 August 2009 1:30 AM, PDT | Quick Stop | See recent Quick Stop news »

London - The Mutant Chronicles unleashes cannibalistic humanoids into a steam punk World War I world. The movie features Thomas Jane (Hung), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Devon Aoki (Sin City), Sean Pertwee (Doomsday) and John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich) as the only defense against these ungodly creatures in the CGI enhanced environment. Can Aoki cut them all down with her cool sword?

Director Simon Hunter took nearly two years to adapt the role playing game into a cinematic universe. You can get great sense of what he undertook for his first major motion picture on the Two-disc Collector’s Edition DVD and the Blu-ray recently released by Magnolia Home Entertainment. I had a chance to swap questions via email with Hunter. Here’s the Q&A action:

Legion redband trailer

In the future, God gets pissed off at humanity for some reason or another, and decides he's going to send his legion of angels to destroy earth. Because you know, a meteor or a flood would just be too convenient. MySpace has the first look at Legion via an epically long redband trailer. It looks like Constantine meets well, Constantine, but with less Keanu Reeves and way more automatic weapons fire. Who knew you could kill an angel with bullets? I must have missed that Bible verse.
