Director updates on Creature from the Black Lagoon and The Brood

It's been taking rather a long time for the Creature from the Black Lagoon to re-emerge on to the big screen for the planned remake. And now it's evolving yet again...
The project has been in development at Universal for more than a quarter of a century and the studio has just hired a new director, Carl Rinsch.
Rinsch, whose previous work is mainly in commercials, was recently linked to the new Alien prequel (now being helmed by Ridley Scott) and will be in the hotseat for the samurai film 47 Ronin (starring Keanu Reeves).
Meanwhile, Breck Eisner - who had dropped out of the Creature remake earlier this year - is now directing a new version of The Brood, David Cronenberg's 1979 horror film about mutant children instructed to carry out violence through a psychic link with their mother.

Saoirse Ronan in The Lovely Bones
Photo: Paramount Pictures
As mud flies with every smashing turn of a battered safe pushed to its final resting place, I came to realize Peter Jackson's The Lovely Boneswas the very best film he could make out of Alice Sebold's bestselling novel. This, though, doesn't mean he ended up with a fantastic film. In fact The Lovely Bones is a perfectly fine film that never stalls and truly shines inside its technical efficiency, but it seems to lack something of a human element, muting the overall result. I can't blame this on Jackson or anyone involved; I never thought this was a book that could perfectly translate to the big screen. As a result I can't imagine anyone being entirely disappointed as much as you will walk away plainly amused and slightly entertained.
Murdered at the age of 14, The Lovely Bones is

Peter Jackson Still Pondering a New Take on Gallipoli

He's hardly got a plate as full as that of Guillermo del Toro, but now that The Lovely Bones is in theatres, Peter Jackson still has a few things to work on. There's Tintin and a couple of Hobbit movies to finish, just for starters. But he's still talking about a project that is dear to him: a new take on the Battle of Gallipoli, an attempt made during World War I to take the Turkish Peninsula. It was the first major engagement for the then-new Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (Anzac); scores of Anzac troops fought and were killed in the battle.
This may not be as much of a personal dream project as King Kong was, but Jackson has talked about this off and on for years. His grandfather fought in the battle, which lasted eight months, and Jackson was even involved in the restoration of a

Peter Jackson Announces, Hints At Elaborate Blu-Ray Shenanigans

It has been announced that the Lord of the Rings Trilogy is finally arriving on Blu-Ray April 6th. Currently, Peter Jackson’s only film available in the format is 2005’s King Kong. While the Kong Blu-Ray contains both the theatrical and extended cuts of the film, these Lord of the Rings Blu-Rays will contain only the theatrical versions.
In a recent radio interview, however, Jackson mentioned additional plans to release some of his ‘earlier films’ on Blu-Ray as well in the near future — a list we can only hope covers everything up to 1996’s The Frighteners.
The Lord of the Rings Blu-Ray set will span 9 discs, with the extra features on Standard-Definition DVDs and Digital Copies thrown into the mix as well. Retail price: $99.98.

Peter Jackson Goes Blu-ray

The only Peter Jackson title so far available on Blu-ray is King Kong, a beautifully transferred rendition of the rather underrated film that comes with both theatrical and extended versions on the one disc. Indeed, it is a nice reminder of the superiority of Blu-ray that you can watch the entire extended cut without having to switch discs half way through.
When the Lord of the Rings films hit Blu-ray on April 6th next year, however, they're coming only in their shorter, theatrical cuts. How long until the extended cuts come? Nobody really knows, but as if rubbing salt into a wound, these short-cut BDs are going to contain a special feature plugging the imminent extended editions. More details on what else the discs will offer after the break.
Another altogether less antagonising tease for some upcoming Peter Jackson Blu-ray releases came when the director made a guest appearance on

After 'The Lovely Bones,' Here Are Five Novels Peter Jackson Should Consider

There's no denying it. Peter Jackson knows his way around an adaptation. "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy was stellar, as we all know. And "King Kong," for all of it's issues, carried with it the spirit of the original. Now he's on to "The Lovely Bones," Alice Sebold's beautiful-yet-disturbing story of a young girl's trip through the afterlife following her murder at the hands of a sadistic serial killer. He had his work cut out for him there. Making that story something an audience can stomach without succumbing to overblown emotion is nigh on impossible.
I suppose that’s why it’s so strange that Jackson came to direct an adaptation of the massively successful novel in the first place. “The Lovely Bones” is a quiet book, a narrative crushed underneath the weight of trauma and loss, it’s only release in the eventual comeuppance visited upon its

Trying to figure out why people do what they do, even when you're interviewing them, can be a monumental task - as much for them as for you. Spirits are moved, muses are called upon, and in Hollywood, careers must often be maintained, but getting to the heart of what motivates filmmakers to take on challenges can be confounding because one suspects that it's not altogether different than what prods us in our daily lives - basic interest, casual discovery, or even arbitrary whim. Thankfully, however, with folks like Peter Jackson, there's almost enough information on how he does what he does that dissecting the reasons why seems redundant, or at least unnecessary.
Jackson's latest film is The Lovely Bones, an adaptation of Alice Sebold's acclaimed novel of the same name. Suffice it to say that the reasons precisely why this project would become his follow up to four

Jackson Planning Dragon TV Series?

Director Peter Jackson is rethinking plans to turn dragon adventure books Temeraire into a money-spinning movie franchise, because he's convinced the stories would be better told as a TV series.
The King Kong filmmaker purchased the rights to author Naomi Novik's fantasy novels in 2006 with a view to turning the stories into movies. Five of the books have already been released, while Novik has promised a further four tales to wrap up the series.
But Jackson is having second thoughts about the daunting project and could take Temeraire to the small screen instead.
He tells movie website AintItCool.com, "I can't see any degree of common sense in trying to mount them one at a time as feature films. To me the stories, having read the first ones, already work as this continuing, on-going saga, so I'm thinking 'Is there a marketplace out there yet for a large budget mini-series?'
"...I'm thinking is there actually a market out there that'd give us the budget to do this properly and allow us to shoot this as a six, seven or eight part series where we have freedom, we have great production values and are able to tackle it as the epic saga that it deserves?"

One remake we're looking forward to that has a really good chance of being good is Alex Winter's redux of The Gate in 3D. If Winter can capture just a fraction of the original film's charm then we're pretty damned golden. Some concept art snuck online today along with a boat load of details about the film.
Winter will be working from a script penned by himself and Kerric Macdonald. Charlotte Huggins (Journey to the Center of the Earth) and Andras Hamori are producing. The legendary H.R. Giger will be designing the creatures
Synopsis
When best friends Miles and Terry discover a mysterious crystalline rock in Miles's back yard, they quickly dig up the lawn in search of more. Instead, they unearth the Gate—the opening to an underground chamber containing terrifying evil.
The teenagers soon realize the horror they have unleashed, as one dire event follows another. With supernatural fiends invading suburbia,

Monster news regarding Alex Winter's The Gate 3D remake as we got our hands on some early concept art, along with pages, upon pages of details regarding the pic.
One of the most interesting tid-bits is that the creatures for the remake were designed by three-time Academy Award winning FX guru Randall William Cook (The Lord of the Rings trilogy, King Kong), and new creature design will be done by H.R. Giger (Alien)!
The classic 1987 children's fantasy, The Gate, reopens after twenty years and this time in 3D format.
On its opening weekend, in August 1987, The Gate outperformed Ishtar (starring box-office giants Dustin Hoffman and Warren Beatty), and earned North American revenues approximately ten times its production budget. The Gate became the most profitable Canadian movie of 1988, and as such, was awarded the Golden Reel for the highest grossing movie of the year at the 1988 Canadian Academy Awards.

'Invictus' Dominates In This Week's Box Office Poll

There's only a single brand-new wide release this week, and it's "Invictus." Set in post-apartheid South Africa, the story follows Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) as he joins with the country's national rugby team captain Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon) in the hopes of uniting his scattered nation. In addition to featuring a dynamite cast, "Invictus" also happens to be the latest directorial effort from Clint Eastwood.
Also getting a big opening this week is Disney's triumphant return to 2-D animation with "The Princess and the Frog," which was previously only available in limited release. It opens on more than 3,000 screens this weekend, an even higher number than the 2,000+ for "Invictus." It's a (somewhat) contemporary fairy tale about young New Orleans girl who sets out to find a local voodoo priestess after she is magically transformed into a frog.
A trio of fine options await in the limited release world, offering very

Peter Jackson and Stanley Tucci Talk The Lovely Bones

Dread Central hit The Lovely Bones press conference in Beverly Hills, CA, where director Peter Jackson, along with the film’s stars Stanley Tucci, Saoirse Ronan, Rose Mclver, Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon and Rachel Weisz, talked up their cinematic incarnation of Alice Sebold’s best-selling novel.
Centering around lead character ‘Susie Salmon’ (Ronan) who is murdered by child-rapist and killer ‘Mr. Harvey’ (played in the film by Tucci), The Lovely Bones’ source material is at times a challenging read in its portrayal of violence, particularly in the first chapter. The tome though at its core focuses on the effect of the crime on the victim and her relatives, as Susie watches them from a hallucinogenic limbo while struggling with her feelings of vengeance towards her killer and her empathy toward the plight of those that remain. Jackson, whose previous efforts include the rather fantastical The Lord of the Rings trilogy and 2005’s King Kong,

Every year, publishers push to get their high-profile titles into gamers’ hands before Black Friday, leaving a quality-title dead zone until the beginning of Quarter 1. The end of release season also signals the official beginning of Game of the Year speculation. Every big-budget, large-scale, game is now available on store shelves which means players should have a pretty good idea about which 2009 title they enjoyed the most – unless you are holding your breath for James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game, which most of us aren’t.
Instead of relying on the outcome of the upcoming Spike VGAs, which in 2005 nominated 50 Cent: Bulletproof and Peter Jackson’s King Kong: The Official Game for awards, Game Rant has decided to put together a list of our nominations, along with a bit of commentary, for our Game of the Year choices. As usual, we’re interested to hear what our readers think,

An Italian website has an interview up with director Peter Jackson. He talks about some upcoming/future projects, including "The Hobbit" briefly. The text is in Italian, but the video is Jackson himself talking in EnglishPeter Jackson is one of my favorite directors. He is certainly one of the best genre guys working right now. And hearing him talk is always inspiring, mostly because he has an interesting perspective on things, but also because he is one of those people that genuinely seems like they love what they are doing, and as an extent, Deserves to be doing what they're doing. Also, his "King Kong" remake seems to be one of those nerd punching bag movies that everyone loves to rag on. Well, I love that film; it's one of my favorite of the past decade. It's pure escapist adventure emotional filmmaking, and I will never understand the backlash it received.

Director Peter Jackson is busy doing press for "The Lovely Bones," and he's looking fantastic doing it.
Jackson has been in Rome this week for the Italian premiere and he's barely recognizable as the Oscar-winning director of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. He lost 70 lbs between the early 2004 awards and the December 2005 premiere of "King Kong" by eating right and working out, and he got laser surgery to lose the glasses.
The healthier lifestyle clearly agrees with him as this week in Rome, decked out in a tuxedo with his beard trimmed, he looked a decade younger than his 48 years.
"The Lovely Bones" stars Mark Wahlberg, Susan Sarandon and Rachel Weisz and opens in the Us on December 11. Scroll to the bottom to watch the trailer.
