Marlon Wayans Rumored for Richard Pryor Biopic

8 October 2009 2:28 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Entertaiment Weekly is reporting that Marlon Wayans is already in negotiations to star as comedy legend Richard Pryor in the upcoming biopic Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said?

Part of the well-established Wayans Brothers clan, which helped pioneer In Living Color and several hit comedies in the early to mid '90s, Marlon Wayans showed his range by dropping a highly memorable performance as a Coney Island junkie in Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream (2000).

If we didn't have that performance to judge from, we might think the idea of him portraying Pryor is a big mistake, since he's also written and starred in several forgettable Scary Movie installments.

But according to the EW post, Wayans fought hard for the chance to audition for the role, and he then wowed producers with a 13-minute audition in which he "transforms into Pryor."

Apparently, Eddie Murphy was once attached to this project, »

Hitfix scored this bit of news which is sure to have the internet saying “wtf?” for the rest of the day.  Hitfix tells us that Bill Condon and the film’s executive producers were impressed with Marlon Wayans after his dramatic audition which featured two scenes directly from the film.  What »

Bill Condon Takes On ‘The C Word’

28 September 2009 7:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Delicate subject matter generally requires an equally delicate approach, and The C Word is no different. Showtime’s pilot starring Laura Linney (John Adams) about a suburban wife and mother recently diagnosed with cancer will attempt to mix the seriousness of the disease with a lighter spin, and they’ve found their juggler in director Bill Condon (Dreamgirls).

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Condon will reunite with Linney for the first time since they worked together on Kinsey, where Linney received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress in 2004. While the writer, director and Oscar-winner is no stranger to sensitive subjects, as his writing and direction on 1998’s Gods and Monsters would suggest, he’s also been involved in other genres throughout his career.

Condon has managed to tackle horror in 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the Flesh and musicals in 2002’s Chicago, and was even part of the writing »

Some Scary Talk with Peter Sarsgaard

21 July 2009 6:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Peter Sarsgaard made his big-screen debut in 1995's Dead Man Walking as the murder victim Walter Delacroix, but his breakthrough performance was in 1999's Boys Don't Cry as John Lotter, one of the killers of transgendered man Brandon Teena. Since then, he's become famous for his nuanced performances in a wide variety of films like Shattered Glass, Kinsey, Jarhead, and the upcoming An Education.

If you have missed the ubiquitous and creepy posters for his new movie with Vera Farmiga, Orphan, let me give you a quick synopsis. After Kate Coleman (Farmiga) has a stillborn baby, she and her husband John (Sarsgaard) decide to adopt Esther, a deadly serious Russian orphan who wears ribbons around her neck and wrists and old-fashioned ruffly dresses played by Isabelle Fuhrman. But things keep going wrong when Esther's around... hence the tagline in those ubiquitous and creepy posters with the tagline "There's something wrong with Esther. »

As you know, we here at Fsr try to make it around to as many of the major film festivals as possible. We've brought you excellent coverage from Sundance, Toronto, Tribeca and of course, the best coverage of SXSW, our hometown fest. But even though we catch a lot of great fests, we don't make it to them all -- not yet, at least. One festival that we're sad to be missing this year is CineVegas in Las Vegas. While many of the fest's higher profile films are re-runs from Sundance and SXSW, there are a few hidden gems among their official selection. One such film is Easier With Practice, from writer/director Kyle Patrick Alvarez. It stars Brian Geraghty, who was sensational in this year's best film so far The Hurt Locker, as a man whose heart is opened and captured by a mystery and sexually aggressive woman who calls him late at night in his »

Sometimes the Catalogue will cover new releases of older films, and sometimes it will feature exactly what the title implies, back catalogue items. These will normally be from smaller specialty labels that have formed the backbone of the horror fans ability to build a truly representative collection of their favorite films. I'm proud to start this column back up after a two year hiatus and promise to work hard to recommend films that you're in danger of forgetting about, have maybe never heard of, or that might be ready to go out of print.

I'm also proud that the first edition of Catalogue is all about Synapse Films. Anybody who goes to conventions and has stopped by the Synapse table has not only seen first hand the amazing array of labor of love releases and Special Editions they produce, »

Oscars 2010: Eddie Murphy as Richard Pryor in Bill Condon's biopic

27 February 2009 12:15 PM, PST | Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news »

The first time Eddie Murphy worked with writer-director Bill Condon he earned a nomination for best supporting actor at the Oscars. That was for playing a fictionalized version of singer James Brown in "Dreamgirls" back in 2006 (he lost to Alan Arkin, "Little Miss Sunshine"). Now the two are reuniting to make a movie about Murphy's longtime idol — the late Richard Pryor.

Fox Searchlight — which shepherded "Slumdog Millionaire" to eight Oscars this year — is reportedly picking up this $25 million project. Eddie Murphy has long revered Richard Pryor, paying homage to him in his stand-up routines and casting Pryor in his directorial debut "Harlem Nights" in 1989. The life of the comic was fraught with drama — drug and alcohol abuse, broken marriages, illnesses — and could make for a powerful piece.

Bill Condon won an Oscar in 1998 for his script of "Gods and Monsters," which explored the troubled life of 1930s film director James Whale. »

Eddie Murphy To Get Raw As Richard Pryor

27 February 2009 2:36 AM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

It seems that Dreamgirls writer/director Bill Condon just can't leave Eddie Murphy alone - having written a script almost tailor made for the star, following the life of outrageous stand-up Richard Pryor. The smokin' script, titled Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said? which was initially signed up for development at The Weinstein Company, is said to have piqued the interest of Fox Searchlight, who are still ebullient  after cleaning up at this weekend's Oscars with Slumdog Millionaire. The studio also backed Condon for his 2004 biopic Kinsey, starring Liam Neeson and Peter Sarsgaard. Despite gathering unbelievable returns from his recent list of comedy clangers like Meet Dave and Norbit, Murphy has fallen foul of critics in recent years. But Condon should certainly be in his good books, having delivered him the role of James 'Thunder' Early in Dreamgirls which saw him back on form and nominated for the Best Supporting Oscar in 2007.Murphy, »

Eddie Murphy Attached to Richard Pryor Biopic

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that writer/director Bill Condon is currently shopping around Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said? to the studio subsidiaries and independent distributors around Hollywood, with Eddie Murphy attached to star as the late comedian. EW says the project was initially set up at The Weinstein Company never got off the ground. Condon was able to pull it out when the company put it into turnaround. Apparently Fox Searchlight is eyeing the film. Pryor, widely regarded as one of the most important stand-up comedians of all time, was best known for his unflinching examinations of racism and customs in modern life, and gained a reputation for his frequent use of colorful, vulgar and profane language and racial epithets. He also starred in numerous films as an actor, and often collaborated on many projects with actor Gene Wilder. He also co-starred in Harlem Nights opposite Murphy, »

Krasinski Joins Nancy Meyers Comedy

9 February 2009 11:05 PM, PST | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

John Krasinski – so good as the affable Jim on the Us version of The Office – has signed on to star alongside Meryl Streep, Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin in Nancy Meyers’ new, untitled, romantic comedy, bringing the average age of the cast down below 80 in a single stroke.Krasinski has been plugging away at a sustainable movie career, combining cameos in the likes of Kinsey, Dreamgirls, and Meyers’ The Holiday with starring roles in Leatherheads, Licence To Wed and the new Sam Mendes’ movie, Away We Go. He’s also turned his hand to writing and directing, with Brief Interviews With Hideous Men, a David Foster Wallace adaptation that premiered at this year’s Sundance. But so far, movie stardom has proved elusive for the 29 year-old. Perhaps this movie will change all that, for Meyers’ movies usually connect with audiences. Although it’s not known how significant Krasinski’s role will be, »
