I absolutely loved director Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox. The film is his first foray into stop-motion animation and it’s like he brought the genre to him rather than attempting to adapt to the genre. Trust me; if you’re a fan of his previous work like Rushmore, The Royal Tenenbaums, and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, you’re going to love this movie.
As most of you know, Fantastic Mr. Fox is based on the best-selling children’s book by Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, James and the Giant Peach) and it features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Jason Schwartzman, Bill Murray, Wally Wolodarsky, Eric Anderson, Michael Gambon, Willem Dafoe, and Owen Wilson. But unlike some animated movies that cast famous actors to help sell tickets, everyone who provides a voice is perfect in this film. Again, this is a great movie »

With a cast of talking stop-motion animated wild animals that are imbued with the herky-jerky charm of old Rankin-Bass Christmas specials ("Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer"), it may seem like modern-day iconoclast filmmaker Wes Anderson has turned a corner into gentler, family-friendly waters. And in a sense, he has - but make no mistake, "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" is a Wes Anderson film through and through, complete with the pre-requisite father-issues, family angst, and nihilism that we've come to expect from his decade of quirky R-rated fare such as "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" (albeit, in smaller doses). It even has such Anderson signature settings as mundane schoolrooms and science labs, as well as occasional detailed charts and graphics, not to mention a penchant for tan corduroy clothing, and any number of other accoutrements and flourishes held over from bygone eras of the not-so-distant past. Wes Anderson's funny, fabulous Fantastic Mr. Fox feels like a book that's been missing from his library, an all-ages comedy with tender life lessons gently imparted by lovable characters. For all I know, Roald Dahl is spinning in his grave, but the British author's book has provided Anderson with a badly-needed spark that reignites his creative juices.
Not that Anderson's post-Owen Wilson collaborations with Noah Baumbach have been complete disasters. Somewhere alone the line, though, perhaps midway through The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou and all the way through The Darjeeling Limited, it felt like Anderson's playfully twee tone wore thin. His characters, who have always teetered on the brink between self-absorbed and self-pitying, fell hard toward the irredeemably murky end of a perpetual personality crisis.
It made you downright concerned that somebody might really kill themselves.

Ben Stiller is my love / hate actor. I love it when he plays wacky characters like in Dodgeball and Tropic Thunder, but hate him when he plays himself in, oh...every single one of his romantic comedies.So I'm curious as to how he'll be in his new film "Greenberg" directed by Noah Baumbach, who directed The Squid and the Whale and also wrote The Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou. Like Coraline, Spirited Away, and Where the Wild Things Are before it, Fantastic Mr. Fox is a children's film that doesn't treat its pint-sized audience with kid gloves. Though Wes Anderson's previous directorial outings have had their fair share of man-children, this is the first film that the hipster favorite has created with kids in mind. However, this smart adaptation of a Roald Dahl classic never talks down to its viewers, and its fun, feisty adventure proves to be Anderson's best work since The Royal Tenenbaums.

Fantastic Mr. Fox is Wes Anderson's sixth feature and third to be pre-judged as a "Wes Anderson" film—a calcified pejorative often bearing little relation to what the movies are actually like. A "Wes Anderson movie," we're given to understand, is a series of candy-colored rectangular sets and frames boxing in little more than statically quirky characters. It's true that Anderson's thematic concerns have been consistent: dysfunctional families, absent/negligent paterfamiliases, '60s pop and rock songs, hermetically detailed mise-en-scène. But there are also meaningful differences between each one, rarely noted in negative reviews convinced Anderson has outstayed his welcome. After The Royal Tenenbaums—in which Rushmore's occasional cuteness thickened into an emotional mausoleum, with only Luke Wilson's suicide attempt breaking through—Anderson made two transitional films entering new terrain. Anderson's detractors didn't notice: two movies about bad fathers and tragic sons with suicidal impulses were two too many. »

Seven months ago, the movie formerly known as The Boat That Rocked had its UK theatrical release, followed up two months later with the DVD. Reviews at the time were so-so. Now the pic gets shipped state-side, renamed Pirate Radio and apparently with all the good parts taken out.
That said, the soundtrack contains 32 '60s classics from The Kinks to The Who to David Bowie — sending it straight to the "Listen, Don't Watch" category, and leaving us wondering if it belongs on our list of 10 Soundtracks Better Than Their Movies.

Mr. Fox with his director Wes Anderson. Wes Anderson came to Hollywood from Texas armed with a short film and a best friend with a funny nose. The year was 1993, the film was Bottle Rocket, and the best friend was—and still is—Owen Wilson. By chance, James Brooks saw and loved Bottle Rocket, and gave Anderson the boost he needed, helping him shore up financing to expand the short into a full-length feature. Up had edged close to a cumulative U.K. take of £20 million by the end of last weekend, and will have certainly already have passed that as we head into this weekend. Oh, those crazy Pixar kids, making movies with mass appeal and genuine emotion! Who knew making successful movies could be so simple? Fantastic Mr. Fox won’t open in North America for a couple weeks still, and it’ll get only a limited release in New York and Los Angeles -- hard to believe, but Wes Anderson’s biggest opener so far, number-of-screens-wise, was his first film, Bottle Rocket, which debuted on 28 screens; next is The Royal Tenenbaums, on five; his other films all opened on just two screens. Anyway: the point is, Fox cannot possible open to $15 million, which would be what we might expect for North America based on the U.K. performance, were it to open wide here. »

Anderson collaborated with Henry Selick who previously worked witht eh director on The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. The film stars the voice work of Meryl Streep, George Clooney, Jason Schwartzman, and Bill Murray and is set for release November 13, 2009. This is something that needs to happen with more regulatory: serious filmmakers choosing animation as a viable genre option instead of treating it like something of a lesser career choice. Wes Anderson, who has previously directed such films as The Royal Tenenbaums and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, adapts Roald Dahl’s other great work, Fantastic Mr. Fox, (he is probably best known for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and James and the Giant Peach), at least for a moment proving that Pixar doesn’t have the rights to great animation. Fox Searchlight just made a brand new featurette for “The Fantastic Mr. Fox” available giving us some clues as to how director Wes Anderson and his crew used old-school stop-motion animation to bring the Roald Dahl classic to life.
Plot summary: Mr and Mrs Fox (Clooney and Streep) live an idyllic home life with their son Ash (Schwartzman) and visiting young nephew Kristopherson (Eric Anderson). But after 12 years, the bucolic existence proves too much for Mr Fox’s wild animal instincts. Soon he slips back into his old ways as a sneaky chicken thief and in doing so, endangers not only his beloved family, but the whole animal community. Trapped underground and with not enough food to go around, the animals band together to fight against the evil Farmers – Boggis, Bunce and Bean – who are determined to capture the audacious, fantastic Mr Fox at any cost.

They’ve finally released the trailer for Fantastic Mr. Fox, director Wes Anderson’s adaptation of Roald Dahl’s classic story, and Anderson’s first full foray into stop-motion animation. Previously, his film The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou featured a bit of stop-motion work.
Anyway, I just watched the trailer and I have to say that I’m not blown away by it. This isn’t that great of a trailer, though I will never hang a movie from the gallows based on a bad trailer. But it does make me wonder: If a viewer goes into this cold, without knowing much of Anderson’s work, what would they think? At any rate, you can see some “Anderson trademarks” displayed in this film. I’ll talk about them after you watch the trailer:

What gives? Wes Anderson is a pretty popular director, right? I mean, "The Royal Tenenbaums" is one of the best movies out there! And then there's "Rushmore," "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou" and "Bottle Rocket"! ...and "Darjeeling Limited." I suppose.
Still, I'm surprised at the lack of a banner credit in this newly released trailer for director Wes Anderson's adaptation of "Fantastic Mr. Fox." He rounded up many of his (awesome) usual suspects for the cast, including Bill Murray, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwarzman. Plus George Clooney and Meryl Streep. Enjoy the stop-motion foxiness!
