Opens: January 1st 2010
Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McShane, Bradley Cooper, Kerry O'Malley
Director: Christian Alvart
Summary: A family services social worker thinks she has seen it all until she meets her newest, most mysterious case - a troubled 10-year old girl whose parents try to kill her. The social worker decides to take her in herself until the right foster family comes along.
Analysis: Despite the presence of promising German director Christian Alvart ("Pandorum"), 'Case' has sat on a shelf since late 2006 and is finally being quietly shuffled out as the lone release on New Year's Day for one very good reason - it stinks. Having opened in Australia a few months back, reviewers utterly savaged the film as both incredibly dumb and utterly ludicrous. Lead star Renee Zellweger also scored personal criticism to a level rarely seen in film reviews outside of comments about Nicole Kidman …

On the heels of my earlier comments about some commercial dude directing The Creature From The Black Lagoon remake instead of Breck Eisner, I can report that, according to the L.A. Times, Eisner will be directing another remake: David Cronenberg's The Brood.
Eisner's remake of The Crazies has been getting lots of love on other horror sites of late, but I'll reserve my comments on the film until I see it (and if it lacks the social commentary of George Romero's original, those who criticized Zach Snyder's Dawn Of The Dead remake for eschewing Romero's commentary on consumerism should be equally upset with Eisner).
The one comment I will make is about a new type of director that's emerging in horror of late: the sequel king. Guys like Eisner and Marcus Nispel threaten to throw themselves into a horror ghetto where all they will be known for …

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything regarding filmmaker Dan Walton’s planned feature directorial debut Bind, but today that’s all changed. Walton (who served as co-executive producer on 2008’s lurid Gutterballs) informed us that the film (which now features the tag-line "Hell Just Froze Over") is set to go before cameras in March of 2010 in Vancouver, Canada, and also provided us with a synopsis of the 80’s horror homage and an updated cast list.
According to Walton, who will direct from his own script, Bind tells the story of “a weekend getaway to a scenic winter wonderland that takes a deadly turn when a group of friends find themselves pitted against the elements and a dark presence with a bloody agenda.”
FX man Brian Sipe, whose previous credits include Van Helsing and Pirates of the Caribbean, will be on hand to provide what is expected …

Back in the early 1970s, director George Romero made a flick called The Crazies. Probably due to his reputation as one of the icons of low-budget scare 'ems, a mostly Ok but not fantastic movie has secured a place in the director's legacy. It's fine, but not one of his best.
The remake, coming out early next year, follows a similar patter used by the 2005 version of Dawn of the Dead. If it works out that well, then the film is an unqualified success. It's off to a good start, because Timothy Olyphant and Radha Mitchell are worth having in your horror movie. And the first trailer had a few surprisingly intense moment. I say surprising because I trust director Breck Eisner about as far as I can thrown my car.
Now there's a second trailer, which premiered on Friday at Yahoo!, and they're two-for-two. It might not blow you away or anything, …

The prices plummeted this year, so Blu-ray players are likely to be under plenty of Christmas trees. Phelim O'Neill advises what to play on them
Blockbusters
Jj Abrams's rebooted Star Trek (Paramount) was not only the sole moment of unbridled fun in this year's blockbuster season but the best, full bells and whistles Blu-ray issue, too. With its sparkling HD visuals (not a given for Blu-ray), vibrant soundtrack and exhaustive supplementary material, it's ideal for showing to anyone who dares ask, "Why all the fuss about Blu-ray?"
Documentary
Let's not forget the educational importance of Blu-ray. Actually, let's do, as the picture quality on series like David Attenborough's Planet Earth and Life (BBC) is so gobsmackingly pristine that the senses are too overloaded to take in any useful information. Better to go for slightly lower-fi stuff, documentaries where the pictures do all the talking …

George Romero Fans I have a new zombie film for you all that is sure to tickle your fancy and put a smile on your zombie loving face. Its name? Pontypool. I watched this movie a couple weeks ago and can not say enough how much it impressed me. Unlike alot of zombie films which go for gore and grizzlyness over intelligence and intensity Pontypool actually manages to pull off both which is what brings George Romeros name into this conversation.
Helmed by renowned Director Bruce McDonald, Pontypool marks the filmmaker’s first venture into the horror genre. The film is adapted from the novel “Pontypool Changes Everything” by Tony Burgess which tells the story of a morning radio show broadcasting out of a church basement in the small town of Pontypool. What starts out as an otherwise ordinary day suddenly turns deadly when reports start coming in of a …

What can you say about a movie called Evilution? The title alone dictates one of two feelings the viewer will have about this movie. Either it will be a "so bad, it's good" movie, one in which the absurdness of the film is recognized and is played as such, or it will be a "so bad, it is really bad" movie. If I went by the first 5 minutes of the movie, I would have gone with the first option, but then the real movie kicked in and, unfortunately, it becomes the latter. this dreck is played straight as an arrow, serious and earnest, when it needed to be a hamfest of the highest order.
The plot, if you want to call it that, centers on a scientist and Captain named Darren Hall, the sole survivor of the opening scene. Hall, who escapes the blood and carnage of an army facility …

The unconfirmed cast of director Zebediah De Soto's CGI "re-imagining" Night of the Living Dead: Origins is finally official. Danielle Harris, Bill Moseley, Joe Pilato, Alona Tal were all previously announced, but were unconfirmed. Well, dust off that tie and drive to the church because this cast is confirmed!
Moseley will return as Johnny, the part he played in Tom Savini's 1990 remake, and will likely play Johnny in every remake made from here on out. Harris will play Barbara, and Pilato (who appeared in Romero's Dawn of the Dead) and Tal will voice the Coopers.
The casting of Piluto and Moseley is obviously a calculated one, one De Soto explained is "a nod to Romero fans. Horror is a genre and zombie movies are a subgenre that people have been following for years and years." De Soto is one of those followers, and claims that Night of the Living Dead …

Jesse Corti, Danielle Harris, Bill Moseley, Joe Pilato, Alona Tal and Cornell Womack are all lending their voices to The Night Of The Living Dead: Origins, the upcoming re-imagining of George A. Romero's 1968 classic, which is being made in 3D CGI.
Newcomer Zebediah de Soto is directing the horror remake, which follows a group of humans trying to stay alive during a zombie attack.
Corti (Heroes) is voicing the part of a news reporter, Harris (Halloween II) plays a woman broken by the loss of her family, Moseley (Carnivale) is reprising the role of a Wall Street-type that he portrayed in a 1990 live-action remake of Living Dead, Pilato (Dawn Of The Dead) is voicing Harry Cooper, a blue-collar worker who lives for his injured daughter, Tal voices his wife Helen, and Womack (Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen) is a no-nonsense New York cop.

The fantastic friend of quality films that is the Genesis Cinema in Whitechapel has brought to our attention that they are again showing some classic films and hosting some brilliant sounding events in the coming month due to the success of their excellent 80’s film series back in October and it’s all starting off with the special screening of the classic Coen Brothers film ‘The Big Lebowski’.
Big Lebowski is a phenomenal film and my favourite film of all time, it’s also created one of the biggest cult followings spawning the Lebowski-Fest Festivals which celebrates all things Lebowski and also the creation of the religion of Dudeism.
This film should not be missed on the big screen as it may change your life!
So get down to the Genesis Cinema, 93-95 Mile End Road, Whitechapel on the 10th December at 8:30pm to witness this film and if …

Christmas Evil
Released in 1980 and once again we have an unstable main character who puts on the red suit and beard and gives the naughty what they deserve-and we’re not talking about lumps of coal. Arguably the best of the “Christmas Killer” movies, Christmas Evil should not be missed. This rare screening features a 35mm print from …

The sneaker culture eludes me. Me? I'm a boots kind of guy. I know dudes that have more sneakers than Carrie Bradshaw's shoe collection in Sex in the City . Hey, to each their own. But I will admit to getting a bit excited when designers venture into horror territory and create a decent pair of sneaks based on some of my favorite films. Nike took a crack at the genre with a line-up based on A Nightmare on Elm Street , Friday the 13th , Dawn of the Dead and more. But those never saw the light of day (read more about that here ). Now, I've come across some more designs - some that will never be reproduced - that you ought to check out like a pair of sneakers that would make Pinhead grin and another set to stomp a city in. Of course, these suckers - if available - fetch. …

The appropriately named prog rock band Goblin is most famous for their collaboration with Dario Argento on his gory giallo films, especially Suspiria, arguably Argento's most well-known and best film to date. Goblin provided Argento with unforgettable soundtracks to Tenebre, Phenomenon, and Deep Red, as well as Argento's 2001 film Sleepless, which brought the band back together again after 22 years. I'm ashamed to say I have not yet seen Sleepless, but after sitting through Argento's more recent movies like Do You Like Hitchcock? and even Mother of Tears, I'm a little wary.
Goblin also supplied soundtracks to other Italian horror movies, as well as giallo and soft porn director Joe D'Amato's Beyond the Darkness. They did the soundtrack to George Romero's Dawn of the Dead, aka Zombi, under the name The Goblins; much later, Shaun of the Dead used one of the songs from the soundtrack in their film …

Stumped for what to buy your friends and family this year? Forget the socks and chocs and bubble bath – our critics have chosen 40 of the best music, film and TV box sets
Pop by Kitty Empire
1 The Beatles Remastered Stereo Box Set (Parlophone)
At £145, the Beatles box set probably costs roughly what a small car did in the early 1960s. But the startling detail on these CDs will repay the outlay for Beatles nerds and mere mortals alike. Its sister release, The Beatles in Mono – 1960s scooter prices, at a guess – is even more desirable, audiophiles reckon.
2 Kraftwerk The Catalogue (Mute/Emi)
Eight albums by the electronic Beatles, dating from 1974's Autobahn, all gleamingly remastered. Costing considerably less than one of Ralf Hütter's beloved bicycles, this is the master text of most electronic genres – electro, techno, even hip-hop – today.
