Decade in Review: 2003 Top Ten

3 hours ago | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

As you may have noticed, I will not be done with my Decade in Review until sometime into the new year. Hopefully we'll wrap up shortly after the Oscars; You know how distractingly all-consuming the Oscars can be! I hope you'll stay with it even though the rest of the media will move on any second now. They're always in such a rush. No stopping and smelling of the flowers. I've still got to update that "Actors of the Aughts" project for final compilation/statement. For now, let's move on to 2003. What follows is my original top ten list, based on films released in NYC in 2003. If I have anything new to say that'll be in red after the original text.

Special Mentions: The Cremaster Cycle and Angels in America

Most Underappreciated: Hulk (Ang Lee), In the Cut (Jane Campion), Anything Else (Woody Allen), Charlies Angels: Full Throttle (McG) and »

The Naughts: The Actor of the '00s

3 December 2009 10:06 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

Quietly and unexpectedly, Matt Damon has become the premier Hollywood actor of the past decade. He's lent his minutely constructed, surprisingly athletic performances to the films of directors Steven Soderbergh, Gus Van Sant, Paul Greengrass, Martin Scorsese and Clint Eastwood, a roster that's not coincidentally produced some of the most vital and successful films of the past ten years.

His remarkable career isn't simply a matter of a good agent. It's all in the manner in which he so carefully adapts his particular skills to the roles.

Damon's commitment is displayed on his body, which he relentlessly crafts to the specifications of each character -- he's almost the anti-movie star in his physical malleability. Take a look at how he changes from "The Bourne Identity" in 2002 to the Farrelly Brothers' "Stuck On You," a year later. In the former, he carved himself down to muscle and bone, a tightly packed »

Trailer For ‘The Final’: Can Hollywood Go Too Far?

16 November 2009 5:31 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The Afm (American Film Market) is a very big deal. Every year thousands of people attend and hundreds of films are shown by hopeful indie filmmakers trying to get picked up by a studio for a distribution deal. The festival ended last week but the deals are still coming – one of those deals was between After Dark Films and Agora Entertainment for their horror film The Final.

The Final will join 7 other films in the After Dark Horrorfest 4: 8 Films to Die For which include Hidden, Dread, The Graves, Lake Mungo and Zmd: Zombies of Mass Destruction.  Here is the official synopsis for The Final (as well as a trailer for the film):

“In the scenic and remote county of Rocky Branch, Texas, the Workley ranch house would become the infamous scene known internationally on the internet as “The Final.”

Bret Easton Ellis and Gus Van Sant to Film The Golden Suicides

14 October 2009 6:29 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Love him or hate him, you must admit that Bret Easton Ellis’ writing is some of the most innovative and unique work to arise out of the past few decades — Less Than Zero, The Rules of Attraction, and American Psycho not only stunned on the page, but translated into three very good films.

However, his only work at adapting his novels into a screenplay by his own hand was the critically lambasted The Informers, which I have been told to avoid at all costs. I’d like to think, however, that this is simply a fluke, because Ellis’ talents will soon be used to adapt The Golden Suicides with Gus Van Sant (Milk, Elephant) at his side.

Currently, Van Sant is only involved in a co-writing capacity, adapting a Vanity article by Nancy Jo Sales that considers the suicides of Theresa Duncan and Jeremy Blake. According to Variety:

Gus Van Sant's Golden Suicides

13 October 2009 11:46 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

In a pact guaranteed to raise both eyebrows and hackles, Gus Van Sant has teamed up with Brett Easton Ellis to write The Golden Suicides, based on the true story of the double suicide of artists Jeremy Blake and Theresa Duncan.Blake and Duncan were popular New York Artists who, for reasons unknown, became increasingly paranoid that they were being conspired against by the Us government and the church of Scientology. Duncan overdosed on Tylenol in July 2007, and Blake is believed to have drowned himself in the Atlantic a week later. The film stems from a Vanity Fair article by Nancy Jo Sales, and the subject seems to fit perfectly with Van Sant's "Death Trilogy" of Gerry (David Coughlin), Elephant (Columbine) and Last Days (Kurt Cobain) although at this point he's only attached as a writer and not as a director.Ellis' (American Psycho, The Rules of Attraction) involvement is »

Gus Van Sant and Bret Easton Ellis Commit The Golden Suicides

13 October 2009 11:14 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

In 2007, two artists who were hot in the California scene committed suicide, one after the other, following fits of paranoia the two suffered, fearing the government and religious organizations were conspiring against them. Theresa Duncan, a video game designer for girls, killed herself in her bedroom. Jeremy Blake, a popular “digital painter,” found her there and ended his life by walking into the ocean a week later. And Nancy Jo Sales wrote an article for “Vanity Fair” about it. Now, two years later, perhaps the worst combination of writers imaginable are teaming up to pen the film. Find out more about the project, and why Gus Van Sant and Bret Easton Ellis spell disaster, after the jump.

The screen rights to this property were acquired by three different production companies working together. The first is PalmStar Entertainment, best known for producing the indie drama “Fifty Pills”–a surprisingly uninteresting film »

Teen Actress Mia Wasikowska Joins Gus Van Sant's Restless

9 October 2009 1:09 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

She may not be a household name yet (and it certainly doesn't help that her last name is an intimidating jumble of consonants and vowels), but 19-year-old Australian actress Mia Wasikowska will soon be thrust into the spotlight when her performance as the title character in Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland hits theaters in March. However, the teen actress is already moving onto her next role as THR reports that she is the first actor to join Academy Award nominated director Gus Van Sant's Restless, a dark coming-of-age drama adapted from a play written by newcomer Jason Lew, who will also be penning the screenplay. The film "delves into the complex tale of a teenage boy and girl who share a preoccupation with mortality."  Many of Gus Van Sant's recent films have delved into the seemingly complex minds and lives of adolescents or those apparently trapped in an immature mind. »

Alice in Wonderland Feels Restless

8 October 2009 8:15 PM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

Mia Wasikowska, the Australian actress soon to be seen in Amelia and as the lead in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, is in final discussions to join the cast of Gus Van Sant’s new project, Restless. Van Sant is the director of Elephant and the Oscar-winning Milk. Restless will be made through Columbia Pictures.

So far, Wasikowska is the only actor cast in the film, which center around “the complex tale of a teenage boy and girl who share a preoccupation with mortality.” Sounds like Van Sant’s sort of thing.

The film previously got attention for being produced by Bryce Dallas Howard and her father Ron Howard, along with Brian Grazer. Slowly this project is moving forward. Keep your eyes on AtomicPopcorn.net for more updates!

tMF Talkback: Do you think Xavier Samuel has what it takes to become a big star?

1 October 2009 5:59 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

Larry411 and I were busy exchanging tweets early today. Our topic - Australian actor Xavier Samuel, who will play Riley on the 3rd installment of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse. I find this character quite interesting, to say the least.

- - -

- - - The wiki on Twilight characters has the following about Riley:

As a vampire, Riley is tall and muscular with bright red eyes and blond hair. Victoria bites and changes Riley when he is approximately Bella's age in Eclipse. Once Riley ages and gains some control, he helps to lead Victoria's army of newborn vampires. He performs his work faithfully because of his love for Victoria, which she pretends to return. However, in a battle between the army of newborns and the Cullens at the end of Eclipse, Edward voices Riley's concern that Victoria has been lying to him. [ read more ]

Afterschool Trailer

19 September 2009 9:36 AM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Over the past year and a half, Antonio Campos’ “Afterschool” has been an Official Selection at the Cannes, Berlin, New York and SXSW Film Festivals. Now, thanks to IFCFilms, the long-awaited theatrical release is scheduled for October 1 although the film will also be available On Demand starting September 30.  Despite the film’s strong record of critical success, IFC has opted for a bit of an unconventional release method.  Then again, a movie examining the dark side of an elite private school probably does not have very wide commercial appeal.  Unless, of course, it stars Blake Lively. In any case, hit the jump and see what all the buzz is about.

A successor of sorts to Gus van Sant’s “Elephant” and Jacob Estes’ “Mean Creek,” Campos’ feature length debut puts the confusion, frustration and violence (both latent and overt) of adolescence front and center and dares the audience to look away. »

Carrie meets Colombine meets Slipknot in The Final

1 September 2009 3:23 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Both anglebender and I agree that this looks incredible. That is, incredibly twisted. I don't know how I initially missed it but luckily I ran across it on Fangoria today. I do love me some high school revenge flicks.. now if only it was as beautifully shot as Gus Van Sant's Elephant.

A group of high school outcasts host a costume party and employ an arsenal of physical and psychological torture to avenge the humiliation and torment they faced at the hands of the popular kids.

Original trailer after the break with a new exclusive trailer at Fangoria.

Love that Banjo music!

Do you remember that young boy who starred with Omar Sharif in Monsieur Ibrahim? He's a young French actor and it was his first ever feature film, and he was incredible! What's his name again? Yes, its Pierre Boulanger! Oh, how about that naughty young boy who was cast alongside Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett in Notes on a Scandal, his name if I recall correctly is Andrew Simpson, where is he now? How about that young and exciting German actor who portrayed the teenage Adolf Hitler in Mein Kampf? Yes, Tom Shilling! And that awesome young guy in AfterSchool? I need to know if he has done more movies! Ezra Miller!

"They ought to be in More pictures!" seems to be the perfect expression for these gifted young actors who have shown such talents but remain relatively unknown and waiting for more movie audiences to discover them. »

Fantastic Fest 09: Trailer for murderous Rampage

31 July 2009 3:49 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

I am by no means a fan of the director of this film.. in fact the only movie of his I finished watching was at Toronto After Dark 2 years ago and was an utter joke. But while my dislike will stop me from mentioning his name, it won't stop me from posting the trailer for his latest film which will premier at Fantastic Fest.. This clearly has potential. Seemingly born out of the directors own anger, it's about a guy who puts on a full body kevlar suit, and loaded with guns, goes on a massive killing rampage. Hell, I didn't even need to see the trailer, I was already down, but yeah, it's good. If you watch the ending of Gus Van Sant's Elephant over and over, this is for you.

Rampage is about a guy named Bill who grows fed up with his dead end existence and the world in general. »
