Hitman Director Xavier Gens to Direct The Fallout

27 October 2009 5:40 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I'm always ready to see a post-apocalyptic action thriller, even when it turns out to be something like Babylon A.D. Call me an eternal optimist. Even the lousy films often have a kernel of a good idea in them. Now a new film called The Fallout, set in post-apocalyptic New York, will shoot early next year. But I'm already a bit detached from it after reading the directorial assignment. Helming will be Xavier Gens, the man behind Hitman and Frontier(s). Put pretty simply, Gens has two strikes against him in my book. Hitman may have featured Olga Kurylenko's severe allergy to clothes and a heroically stoic good try from Timothy Olyphant, but it was truly a mess. (Granted, the post-production on Hitman was contentious, with reports of Gens being fired from the film.) And Frontier(s) recycled elements of other films in a way that left me bored. »

Mini-Capsule Reviews: Aliens vs. Predator 2, Babylon A.D.

28 September 2009 11:09 AM, PDT | SciFiCool.com | See recent SciFiCool.com news »

Sometimes you just don’t feel like reviewing the whole movie, thus the creation of the Mini-Capsule Reviews category. Up first, the sequel “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem”, and the Vin Diesel mess — er, I mean, sci-fi action film — “Babylon A.D.” “Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem” (2007) Directed by brothers Colin Strause and Greg Strause, former visual effects guys turned first-time feature film director. And boy does it show. The Brothers Strause (as they’re credited) could care less about flesh-and-blood characters. The story has the familiar Aliens creatures at the root of a bloody infestation in a small Colorado town. As required by the movie title, a Predator soon shows up to hunt them. Much blood-letting and human spammage ensue. Reiko Aylesworth of 24 fame plays the token human lead, a former soldier who has just returned home, though she shares time with Steven Pasquale as an ex-con. That’s pretty much all »

District 13: Ultimatum - Trailer

17 September 2009 9:35 AM, PDT | Latemag.com/film | See recent LateFilmFull news »

UK trailer for Patrick Alessandrin's District 13: Ultimatum. The sequel to the rather fun "District 13" once again stars Cyril Raffaelli (Live Free Or Die Hard) and David Belle (Babylon A.D.) and is produced by Luc Besson.

It's 2013, three years after the events of the first movie, and it appears that despite government promises nothing has changed in District 13, the racially charged ghetto notorious for its gangs, drug dealers and killers. A consortium of corrupt cops and government officials is conspiring to cause civil unrest within D13 with a view to finding an excuse to raze the area and cash in on its redevelopment. When a local kid accidentally uncovers the plot, the district's resident idealist Leito (David Belle) and elite law-enforcer Damien Tomaso (Cyril Raffaelli) are reunited in a bid to bring peace to the troubled neighbourhood and to expose the conspiracy before a proposed air-strike »

Reed’s Bargain Bin: Babylon A.D.

14 September 2009 6:20 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Even though Film Junk followers would probably prefer to read current Tiff film reviews than a review of an older science fiction film, I have decided to submit this review of “Babylon A.D.” And at the risk of further enforcing the view that I have a poor taste in films, my review is generally a favorable one in contrast to popular opinion. I was aware that this film did poorly at the box office, but I didn’t realize how many bad reviews this film received until after I had watched the film and checked out the reviews on the Internet. The reason why I watched this film is that I try to watch all the high profile science fiction movies regardless of audience reception. »

'The Final Destination' wins Labor Day box office race with $15.4 million

7 September 2009 11:53 AM, PDT | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

It happens every year: Memorial Day kicks off the summer with a box office bang, and Labor Day ends it with a whimper. While overall numbers were up compared to this frame in 2008, audiences didn’t show much enthusiasm for anything at the multiplex this weekend. Three wide-release newcomers—All About Steve, Gamer, and Extract—grossed just $30.4 million combined, while holdovers The Final Destination, Inglourious Basterds, and District 9 took three of the top five slots. Here’s how it played out over the four-day weekend (Friday-Monday): 1. The Final Destination — $15.4 million Despite the short shelf-life of most teen horror pics, this 3-D sequel kept its grip on fans thanks to a dearth of exciting new offerings. The fourth chapter in the horror series has already earned $50.6 million in two weekends, putting it on track to become the franchise’s highest grosser, easily beating 2006’s Final Destination 3 ($54.1 million). 2. Inglourious Basterds »

Box office preview: Will 'Gamer' shoot to the top?

3 September 2009 1:34 PM, PDT | EW - Hollywood Insider.com | See recent EW.com - Hollywood Insider news »

It's been four months since Wolverine sliced open the summer, and eleven weeks since Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen began its rise toward the $400 million mark. Now, the fall movie season is upon us, and you can expect the box office -- like the weather -- to cool off as studios roll out their second-string pics in the downtime before the awards race. Last year's Labor Day weekend saw newcomers Babylon A.D., Traitor, and Disaster Movie get soundly beaten by holdover Tropic Thunder. This time around, we've got a similar crop of likely underachievers: The week's widest release, Gamer isn't even screening for critics, while All About Steve is getting soundly drubbed. On top of that, word-of-mouth champs Inglourious Basterds and District 9 will put up a strong fight for slots in the top five. Here's how it might play out over the four-day Friday-to-Monday weekend: 1. Gamer — $15 million Gerard Butler »

xXx 3 Gets a New Director

26 August 2009 11:02 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

News has surfaced, by way of The Hollywood Reporter, stating that a new director has been found for xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, the third installment in Columbia Pictures’ action series. Last year both star Vin Diesel and Rob Cohen (director of the first installment) agreed to join forces for a third film, but in June this year Cohen bailed to direct Medieval. The new director is Ericson Core (Invincible), who’s worked with Diesel before as the Cinematographer on The Fast and the Furious.

Diesel starred in the original xXx back in 2002, but both he and director Cohen skipped the second film, xXx: State of the Union, starring Ice Cube and directed by Lee Tamahori.

Diesel was somewhat of a hot name at the time of xXx, but for some reason he thought it best to skip both the sequel and two of the Fast and the Furious »

Fashion fix of the week: Oakley square wire sunglasses from The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3

5 August 2009 2:57 AM, PDT | Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news »

John Travolta’s carved out a career playing both heroes and villains, cleverly skipping back and forth between those to root for and those to boo and hiss at. And there’s one quick and simple way of noting whether he’s being a good boy or not – his fashion. His shadier selves are usually the best-dressed, think his sleek suits in Swordfish and The Punisher and so it follows that in new action thriller, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 in which the former hip-wiggler stars as criminal mastermind Ryder who hijacks a New York City subway car and holds the passengers to ransom, that he delivers in the style stakes. Sure, the ‘tache isn’t great (Travolta’s always struggled when it comes to anything hair-related), but his Oakley sunglasses sure are, so much so that we’re naming them as this week’s fashion fix.

Hackers unleash hell in new indie horror BEACON77

20 July 2009 10:13 AM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

The first thing that attracted me to Brad Watson's feature debut, Beacon77, was the intriguing poster which hints at something intense and cosmic going down in a London housing block. Then I noticed that the credits list Tim Wooster as the project's cinematographer.

Dp's are rarely household names so you may have never heard of Wooster, but he's long been one of the best eyes in the business having worked second unit on Babylon A.D., Wanted and most recently two films I'm highly anticipating, Michael Basset's Solomon Kane and Stuart Hazeldine's dystopian thriller Exam.

Synopsis:

Two young women arrive at a curious penthouse apartment, led by one’s crush on her tutor. However, her love interest doesn’t live alone. He’s part of a trio of computer hackers about to embark on the ultimate job on the world’s most mysterious mainframe. Whilst doing so, they unlock more »

Video Game Review: ‘The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena’

22 April 2009 9:30 AM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Video Game Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – Vin Diesel should stick to making video games. After headlining last month’s “Wheelman” and this month’s “The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena,” I have to admit that I like the actor more as a video game hero than I do as a movie star. “Athena” gives fans the most bang for their buck of anything the actor has been involved with in years.

Diesel’s last several feature films - “Fast & Furious,” “Babylon A.D.,” “The Pacifier” - haven’t exactly been his best work. The actor who once seemed so charismatic in films like “Boiler Room” and “Pitch Black” seemed bored by his own routine. However, with two very good games released within weeks of each other, Diesel has proven that he can be a reliable commodity in the gaming world.

Weekly Poll Results: Best Vin Diesel Movie

8 April 2009 2:41 PM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

In honour of the soon-to-be $70 million-grossing Fast and Furious, last week we asked you to pick your favourite movie from the relatively painful filmography of Mr. Vin Diesel. The results from said poll placed Pitch Black at the top by a fairly large margin, followed by The Fast and the Furious and The Chronicles of Riddick. It's interesting that his older films generally seem to rank higher than the new ones (Babylon A.D. being dead last). What do you think, did Vin Diesel squander his early opportunities, and now that Fast and Furious has revitalized his career, do you see him doing the same thing all over again? 1. Pitch Black -- 41.1% 2. The Fast and the Furious -- 13.9% 3. The Chronicles of Riddick -- 13% 4. Boiler Room -- 8.7% 5. xXx -- 6.1% 6. Find Me Guilty -- 5.6% 7. A Man Apart -- 4.3% 7. The Pacifier -- 4.3% 9. Knockaround Guys -- 2.2% 10. Babylon A.D. -- 0.9% »

Vin Diesel Talks Potential Superhero (And Villain) Roles

5 April 2009 1:45 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

In a recent interview promoting his new film Fast & Furious, muscle-man Vin Diesel spoke about which comic book characters he would like to play if he ever gets the chance. It’s no secret that Diesel is a bit higher on the geek-o-meter than you might think just by looking at him - for instance, it is publicly known he is a big Dungeons & Dragons fan (the board game, mind you… not the movie).

He already had his eye on Daredevil at one point, but we obviously know Ben Affleck landed the role instead. In the interview, Diesel has given some thoughts on which types of comic book characters he would like to play. Which are those? Well, namely Sub-Mariner and Doctor Doom.

He didn’t explicitly say he would like to play Doctor Doom, but a character much like him:

“I would be apt to play a villain,” Diesel revealed to MTV News. »

"Fast and Furious" posts the biggest opening weekend of the year!

5 April 2009 | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

“Fast & Furious” burns rubber in first spot. Universal Pictures’ well-marketed “Fast & Furious” actioner has posted the highest opening weekend gross of the year with an estimated $72.5 million pocketed. Reteaming Paul Walker and Vin Diesel as well Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster, the film launched into 3,461 theatres and averaged $20,948 per venue. This is the biggest opening of the franchise by far. (See more comparisons at www.moviejungle.com/boxoffice/comparisons.asp). The film grossed over $30 million more than “Anger Management,” the previous best April opener of all time which debuted back on April 11th, 2003. A most impressive opening for the Justin Lin helmed film which is tracking well with user ratings thus far; according to IMDb, the film is at this point 7.3/10 from over 1,550 votes cast. It’s invigorating news for both male leads. Diesel’s last “Babylon A.D.” role was mediocre and not sought after for the most part, bringing »

Fast & Furious (review)

2 April 2009 4:40 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

You’ve seen the bit in all the TV ads and all the trailers: Vin Diesel and Michelle Rodriguez drive their souped-up street-racing hot rod under a burning gas tanker that’s flipping through the air and coming right at them. It’s a preposterous scenario, but a damned cinematically exciting one, and it’s the capper of the sequence that opens Fast & Furious. Diesel’s Dom and Rodriguez’s Letty are now chillin’ in the Dominican Republic and hijacking gas tanker trucks off the lonely Caribbean highways for fun and profit... mostly for fun, one comes to understand. It’s all very Mad Max, and that’s gotta be cool, right? And as director Justin Lin presents it, it’s terribly awesome and original, as an action sequence, if as thoroughly antisocial as the Furious movies have always been. It bodes well for Lin as a director of action »

The Matrix 10th Anniversary - A Look Back On The Trilogy

31 March 2009 5:09 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

One of the greatest and most memorable movies ever made celebrates its 10th anniversary today. That movie is The Matrix.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been ten full years since The Matrix opened on the big screen on March 31, 1999 to great reviews, a plethora of film awards and an incredibly strong fan base. The movie sits at #29 on IMDb’s top 250 movies as voted by users with over three-hundred thousand votes and it has 86% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The movie, written and directed by Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, set new standards in special effects for action and gunplay, martial arts choreography, sound and music style all the way to cinematography and editing. On top of that, they took a geeky concept and made it insanely popular and cool amongst mainstream moviegoers. It was an action movie that was both intelligent and stylistic and it did pretty much everything right. »

Mike Judge's New Comedy Gets That Oh So Lucky Labor Day Opening

27 March 2009 7:10 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Mike Judge can't catch a break these days. The man behind Beavis and Butt-head, King of the Hill, and Office Space has seen his two previous movies get various degrees of the shaft by Fox, and now it could be happening again at Miramax.

Exhibitor Relations (by way of Cinema Blend) reports that Judge's next film, the ensemble comedy Extract, will receive a September 4th release. Right now, that means it will wage war with Pandorum and Game on Labor Day weekend. The trouble comes with the studios' long-held belief that Labor Day weekend is a burial ground. It's not completely unfounded; only five new releases have earned more than $10 million on Labor Day weekend in the past six years, Transporter 2, Balls of Fury, 3:10 to Yuma, Crank, and Halloween, the only one to top $20 million.

But look at the movies typically released on that weekend and you'll see »

Vin Diesel Talks Chronicles Of Riddick 3

10 March 2009 9:34 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The folks over at Gamespot had a one-on-one phone interview with Vin Diesel to discuss his new video game, Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, and in the interview the topic of a third live-action Chronicles of Riddick movie came up.

In the interview, the question about writing complexities for the game with regards to story implications of a potential third movie was raised and Diesel responded:

Good question. Maybe we’re too tight-lipped about the next Chronicles of Riddick film, and I think circa the release of [Dark Athena] that’s probably when you’ll start hearing more about the next Riddick film. It is underway and I almost think it’s a coincidence that we haven’t heard anything, that there hasn’t been a lot of public stuff on the Riddick movie.

Later in the conversation, Diesel said that the writer of the first two films; Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick, »

Totally Unrecalled For

26 February 2009 11:21 AM, PST | MovieBlog.Ugo.com | See recent Ugo MovieBlog news »

I need a Tums the size of a hockey puck.  According to Dark Horizons, a deal has been struck to remake Total Recall. Paul Verhoeven’s pitch-perfect adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sharon Stone, Michael Effing Ironside, Ronny Cox and the very fetching Rachel Ticotin was released in 1990. When you say “twenty year old movie” it doesn’t sound that unreasonable that a remake be in the works.  But Total Recall does not feel dated.  I just watched it recently, oddly enough.  The action sequences are still rock solid, the performances are great and many of the special effects look great.  Yeah, okay, the hair and some of the music cues are a little of their time - but compare Total Recall with something like 2008’s Babylon A.D. and tell me what is a more effective sci-fi actioner? »
