Given man's unwavering fascination with woman, it's no surprise that the female star acts as the anchor to a dominant portion of horror pictures. I mean really, who wants to see a bare chested man tearin ass through the woods screaming at the top of his lungs while a bladed assailant nips at his heels? I don't - I know that much, although I'm certain there are plenty of men who would disagree (and that's okay with me, to each his own!). The simple fact remains however, women bring a unique appeal and certain sensual atmosphere to film that no man ever could. And it's not all about gratuitous T&A.
There's a comforting quality in the hands of the heroine; a fascinating maternal strength that, as a man I cannot genuinely relate to. I can however admire, and in many cases it's nearly impossible to not admire the lone »

Adrien Brody: sci-fi action star? It seems to be, according to Variety. 20th Century Fox has added Brody, famous for his Oscar-winning role in maligned director Roman Polanski's The Pianist, to the cast of Robert Rodriguez' Predators. Variety claims that "Brody is playing a character close to (the Schwarzenegger lead) in the 1987 original. He's a mercenary who tries to keep his team alive when its members are hunted by the aliens."
Okay, I'll say it. This seems like the biggest case of miscasting since Kate Bosworth inhabited the role of Lois Lane and trampled it. Brody has played edgy roles in Summer Of Sam and The Jacket, but he doesn't seem lively enough to pull off a role that requires this much charisma. And let's face it: physically, he's way too small (he roughly weighs as much as Arnold's left calf). Hopefully I'm wrong about this one, »

The far-out skull-collectors officially have some humans to hunt in Predators... one of them with a rather notable profile. Oscar-winner Adrien Brody will find himself in the wild jungle (again), taking the lead role in the Fox sci-fi action flick from director Nimrod Antal (Vacancy) and producer Robert Rodriguez. While winning accolades for his more serious work, Brody is no stranger to genre material (King Kong, The Jacket, Splice, Giallo). Brody reportedly fought hard for the Predators... »

This is probably the most difficult Top 10 rankings I ever did - more difficult than the updated Top 10 for the actors. I have to find a balance wherein I give proper credit to certain actresses who have already established themselves and are already well-known by fans and ordinary moviegoers vis-a-vis those who have yet to boast of a growing list of followers, but has shown such unforgettable and powerful acting in some very impressive recently released films. At the end of the day, what really matters is that - at this moment - it was her name and her performances that moviegoers and critics alike are talking and raving about. - - -
# 10 - Isild Le Besco: France’s multi-award winning and multi-talented actress Isild le Besco is hot on the heels of Romola Garai in our Top 50 hottest young actresses at #10. Says film critic Marcy Dermansky:

Giallo means ‘yellow’, in Italian, and often refers to the yellow colored covers of cheap, paperback thrillers from the 30’s and 40’s, as well as pulp movies from Italian directors made during the 70’s and 80’s. Argento’s latest offering, since the disappointing Mother of Tears, is something of a pastiche of pulp detective stories, as well as a satirical take on modern ‘horror-porn’ films. Adrien Brody (The Jacket, King Kong, etc) stars as the classic, Chandler-esque, hard-nosed detective, skulking in his underground office; he’s charged with solving the very worst and most grisly cases in the city. After the disappearance of a young female model, he teams up with her anxious sister, and together they set about solving the case. While I’m not the most ardent Argento fan, »

News out of Cannes is that Peter Webber, director of Girl with the Pearl Earring and Hannibal Rising, has been signed to film Olivia Hetreed's Wuthering Heights script. The project's been batted around for awhile -- last year, John Maybury (The Jacket) was supposed to direct, with Michael Fassbender and Natalie Portman as leads.
But Hollywood is a fickle mistress, and Portman pulled out, followed by Fassbender. The newly minted version of Emily Bronte's 1847 tearjerker about the thwarted, moor-side love between heartstrong Cathy and her brooding half-brother, Heathcliff was referenced in the mega-blockbuster Twilight, so it only makes sense that this new version is patently aimed at that audience.
Now, instead of the more mature Fassbender and Portman, the principals will be played by Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick and Quantum of Solace's Strawberry Fields, Gemma Arterton. So think Twilight, only without the sparkly vampires and Mormon chastity vibe, »

Nick Cassavetes has signed on to helm the conservation-themed drama Peaceable Kingdom for New Line, report the trades. Cathy Schulman (Crash) and Peter Guber (The Jacket) are producing through their Mandalay Pictures banner. The story is based on the true life and work of Daphne Sheldrick, the leading animal conservationist in Kenya, who has devoted her life to preventing elephant extinction by endeavoring to save baby elephants left orphaned by war, poaching and culling. Jeff Stockwell (Bridge to Terabithia) penned the screenplay. Schulman says she became passionate about the project after watching a 60 Minutes profile on Sheldrick. Shortly after, she and Guber flew to Africa to meet with the conservationist and began working on what she hopes will be a four-quadrant family film. Cassavetes, whose credits include the crime drama Alpha Dog and the romantic drama The Notebook, most recently directed My Sister's Keeper for New Line. The drama, starring Cameron Diaz, »

Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley in The Edge of Love
Photo: Capitol Films John Maybury has directing films for some time, but it wasn't until 2005's The Jacket starring Keira Knightley and Adrien Brody that he popped up on my radar. I didn't particularly like that film, but I'm not about to throw a guy under the bus after the first go 'round, especially when his follow-up stars Knightley, yet again, along with Sienna Miller, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys. While I would say The Edge of Love is certainly a step up from The Jacket it never quite manages to get over the hump as the story seemed almost too big for only one two hour feature. This film could have been a three-hour epic and Maybury certainly shot it as one, but the fact it works on any level is due to a great cast that saves many »

Here you go horror fans... this is what you've been waiting for so many years to see. Sam Raimi is back in the director's chair and is ready to bring us back to his roots. The first trailer for Drag Me To Hell has finally arrived! Things have changed quite a bit since Sam Raimi gave us his Evil Dead trilogy, and although this lacks the low budget urgency of those films, the cinematography looks gorgeous (Dp Peter Deming previously worked with Raimi on Evil Dead 2, but has since done such films as The Jacket, I Heart Huckabees and Mulholland Dr.). The trailer proclaims this to be "The Return of True Horror", but if you ask me, it seems like ... »

Does Keira Knightley ever get to take a break? She's without question one of the industry's foremost young actresses, but since her 2002 breakthrough in "Bend It Like Beckham," she's also seemed hell-bent on proving herself the hardest working. In the past three years alone, she's appeared in two blockbusting installments of "Pirates of the Caribbean," snagged a Golden Globe nomination for her role in the lauded Ian McEwan adaptation "Atonement," strapped on a corset for "The Duchess" and shrugged out of one for "Silk." But she assures she's had her fair share of time off: "I am sort of chomping at the bit to get going. I got tired, and I wanted to be hungry for it again. And I am very hungry for it now and I can't wait to start."
Knightley's latest role is as Vera Phillips, the childhood flame that poet Dylan Thomas (played by Matthew Rhys »

Julia Roberts has yet to be surpassed. Back in September of last year I asked Who's the Next Big Male Movie Star? At the time Robert Pattinson Fever had spread all over the Internet and the conversation resulted in a wasted experiment as commenters weren't able to have a real debate. However, a few people did ask for a similar feature for the females and I have finally gotten around to putting it together. With the males the name I was looking at in comparison was Will "Guaranteed Box-Office Gold" Smith. With the females I was unable to come up with a name that lives up to the career Julia Roberts put together and she remained my muse. When Pretty Woman came out in 1990 Julia was 22-years-old and had just starred in and won a Golden Globe for Steel Magnolias. Over the following nine years she worked her way into »

The first image of Keira Knightley as Joanna Reed in Massy Tadjedin's Last Night found its way onto the Internet over the weekend and is featured directly to the right. The film, which is expected to be released by Miramax in 2009, follows a married couple as they are apart for a night while the husband takes a business trip with a colleague to whom he's attracted. While he's resisting temptation, his wife encounters her past love. Starring alongside Knightley are Eva Mendes and Sam Worthington (Terminator Salvation and Avatar). Maybe I'm crazy, but doesn't she look a bit like Natalie Portman in that pic? The film was written and directed by Massy Tadjedin who also was part of the writing team on The Jacket, which Knightley starred in back in 2005 and was directed by John Maybury. Knightley is expected to next star in London Boulevard opposite Colin Farrell for »

From out of nowhere a press screening was added here in Seattle for The Edge of Love, a film starring Keira Knightley, Sienna Miller, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys and directed by John Maybury who directed Knightley in The Jacket in 2005. The film in limited theaters on March 20 -- I know Seattle and New York are on that limited city schedule -- and I have no idea how far it will go beyond that. The film is a weird love story centering on two free-spirited women, Caitlin Thomas (Miller) and Vera Killick (Knightley); Vera's husband, William Killick (Murphy); and the brilliant, charismatic poet Dylan Thomas (Rhys) who loves both women. You can imagine where it goes from there. The Edge of Love was actually released in the UK in June of 2008 after debuting at Cannes to a rather lackluster response, but no overwhelmingly negative reviews. I am still anxious to »

The Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller drama, The Edge of Love, now has a new trailer and poster, both of which you can check out below. The film, directed by John Maybury (The Jacket), also stars Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys and opens in limited release March 13, 2009. A beautifully-drawn love story, the film revolves around two feisty, free-spirited women, Caitlin Thomas (Miller) and Vera Killick (Knightley); Vera's husband, William Killick (Murphy); and the brilliant, charismatic poet Dylan Thomas (Rhys) who loves both women. Broken promises, passion, betrayal, the shadow of war and the constant threat of imminent death push the protagonists to The Edge of Love. The story explores the bohemian underworld of war-torn London and the intimate complexities of two young couples whose lives and loves become dangerously intertwined. »
