The Future of ‘Transparent’ is Trans: Why Recasting Jeffrey Tambor’s Role with a Trans Actress is the Best Option

The Future of ‘Transparent’ is Trans: Why Recasting Jeffrey Tambor’s Role with a Trans Actress is the Best Option
Jeffrey Tambor has quit “Transparent” in advance of Season 5, and it’s unclear what the show — which was renewed for a fifth season in August, before the fourth season even aired — might look like without its trans parent.

Jill Soloway’s Emmy-winning Amazon series was inspired by her own parent’s transition and has been largely constructed around Tambor’s Pfefferman family matriarch, Maura. The show needs Maura, even if it does not need Tambor, so the most obvious solution might also be the best one: Recast the role. More specifically, recast the role with a trans actress.

Though imagining a new figure stepping into the show’s close-knit family dynamic may sound jarring, there’s plenty of precedent: Just look to “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” “Roseanne,” “That ’70s Show” or even “Pretty Little Liars.

Jeffrey Tambor Quits Transparent After Sexual Harassment Allegations

As a wave of sexual harassment allegations continues to engulf Hollywood, numerous actors, directors and producers have come under fire for inappropriate and in some cases, disturbing behavior. From Kevin Spacey to Harvey Weinstein, it’s been one after another and this weekend, it’s Jeffrey Tambor, star of Amazon’s hit series Transparent, who’s in the spotlight.

Deadline’s reporting that after two accusations of sexual harassment by members of the show’s team which, for the record, the actor denies, Tambor has now departed. In a statement released earlier today, he said the following:

“Playing Maura Pfefferman on Transparent has been one of the greatest privileges and creative experiences of my life. What has become clear over the past weeks, however, is that this is no longer the job I signed up for four years ago.”

Continuing on, Tambor said:

“I’ve already made clear my deep

‘Transparent’ Creator Jill Soloway Has an Idea for Making Sets Safer: ‘What If We Don’t Have Sex With People at Work?’
Jill Soloway is staying quiet about the allegations of sexual harassment leveled against Jeffrey Tambor — at least for now. The “Transparent” creator, whose star’s future on the series is now uncertain, said during Vulture Festival Los Angeles last night that, “because there is an investigation that we are amidst, I am not able to say anything at all about it.”

Even so, she had thoughts about the ongoing situation in Hollywood more generally, including the notion that “you can do work that’s about intimacy and sex and you can still create boundaries.”

How ‘Search Party’ Gets Darker, Funnier in Season 2 (Exclusive)
Shows about the misadventures of twentysomethings are a television staple, but the TBS breakout Search Party -- with its sly combination of suspenseful thrills and tons of character-driven laughs -- is in a class all its own.

Alia Shawkat, whose rising profile includes work on Arrested Development and Transparent, plays Dory, the face of this ragtag search party. Dory’s restlessness to do something meaningful with her life leads her to look for former schoolmate Chantal Witherbottom after happening on a missing person sign at the series outset. She winds up dragging her reluctant friends into the search: her soon-to-be ex-boyfriend Drew (Stranger ThingsJohn Reynolds), her aggressively vapid-seeming besties Portia (Meredith Hagner, of Younger and Strangers on Facebook Watch) and Elliott (John Early, of the Wet Hot American Summer Netflix series and High Maintenance), and her ex-boyfriend-turned-journalist Julian (Brandon Micheal Hall, who also stars on The Mayor).

By the season one finale, the four friends
