Lucy Dahl Says Screenwriter Melissa Mathison Trying to Adapt Bfg (Big Friendly Giant) For Producer Kathleen Kennedy

4 November 2009 4:11 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Earlier today I participated in a roundtable interview with Roald Dahl’s daughter, Lucy Dahl, for the movie “Fantastic Mr. Fox”.  Since so many of Dahl’s books have not been made into movies, we asked his daughter if she’s heard about any progress in bringing them to life.   The main thing she told us was…many people ask the Dahl estate to make movies, but they are very selective in what they will allow.

But while many of his books have never been optioned by Hollywood, she told us the hot book right now is “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar”. She then told us that producer Kathleen Kennedy has the rights to “Bfg” (Big Friendly Giant) and screenwriter Melissa Mathison (”E.T.”, “The Black Stallion”) has recently written a draft that has gone over well.  Of course writing a draft that people like doesn’t mean it’s a go project, »

Yet Another 'Sherlock Holmes' Trailer

4 November 2009 3:31 PM, PST | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

There are a few more scenes hinted at in the latest Sherlock Holmes trailer, and one of them - what appears to be a perilous fencing duel atop a bridge - could be the showstopper this one really needs. Of course, it's not all new, and in fact, a few of the clips dogeared together here are starting to feel tired already, because they've been in all the footage we've seen over the past however many months.

I think part of that burnout might stem from the fact that Warner Bros. began marketing a December 25th release back when it was still supposed to be a November 20th start. Whatever it is, I almost didn't post this trailer just because so much of it is being regurgitated. But in the end, there are a few extended versions of things we've seen, a couple new jokes, and a very brief glimpse »

Happy National Chocolate Day from Sprinkles (not the cat)

28 October 2009 11:52 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

Sometimes, when I'm feeling blue-ish brown, I watch YouTube clips of Food Network's Unwrapped. I love the one embedded after the jump because the guy interviewed, Gary Guittard, says his company calls sprinkles "decoratifs" and then immediately a chyron underneath him says "Chocolate Sprinkle Maker." In yo' face, Gary Guittard, said Angela's cat. Anyway, the invocation of pasta-making and the way the chocolate sprinkles sift through a pair of prop hands like gravel always picks me up and also turns me on a little. Full disclosure: I chose the Unwrapped segment because I couldn't decide between the Willy »

The weird, lengthy comedy The Revenant (review)

Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

and much more. Program after the break!

Highmore Surprised He Passed Driving Test

British child star Freddie Highmore is amazed he managed to pass his driving test after scolding a pedestrian for attempting to cross his path as he reversed during the examination.

The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory star, 17, recently succeeded in gaining his full driver's licence, but he admits his test wasn't smooth and straightforward.

He says, "You can get 15 minor errors in England. I got three. One was for slowing down and the other two were for inappropriate use of the horn... The guy (pedestrian) walked out and I carried on backing up and then he started (walking) again and I beeped and shouted out the window!"

And Highmore is surprised his examiner didn't penalise him for his road rage: "I did (pass my driving test)... (But my errors) were quite inappropriate." »

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory’ in HD

19 October 2009 10:26 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Chicago – You can keep Tim Burton’s remake of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” with Johnny Depp. I’ll be watching the classic “Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory,” recently released on Blu-Ray, for years to come. It’s not a must-own family film release like the recent “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” or “Wizard of Oz” packages, but the film remains remarkably timeless.

Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0

I’ve seen “Willy Wonka” countless times and can sing “Pure Imagination” for you from the top of my head. So, watching it on Blu-ray isn’t exactly a revelatory experience. And if I need to recount the plot of “Willy Wonka” to you then I can only be jealous of the wonderful, first-time viewing Blu-Ray adventure you’re about to have. It’s a beloved family classic for a reason.

Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory was released on Blu-Ray on October 6th, »

Mirror/Mirror – “There Is a Place Like No Place on Earth”

11 October 2009 8:58 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

2009 and 2010 will see the release of two films by master visionary directors — Alice in Wonderland by Tim Burton and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus by Monty Python alum Terry Gilliam. In a world that’s full to the brim of remakes and reboots, unoriginal thought after unoriginal thought, you’d think we’d be happy to see some artistic ingenuity. And before you start: yes, I’m aware that Alice in Wonderland is in no way a “new” idea, but it’s been quite a while since it has been brought to life on screen effectively.

This got me thinking though, with the release of Alice in March and Parnassus this coming December, that here we have two directors whose stylistic flair is almost inseparable from their body of work. Each has had their share of blockbuster successes as well as flops. When they flop, they tend to flop hard. »

Theatrical Trailer: 9

8 October 2009 12:01 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

I mentioned in a previous post that there are a few movies coming out at the moment with ‘9′ in them… and here’s the latest!

We’ve just been sent the theatrical trailer in high definition for Shane Acker’s ‘9′. The name of the movie is where the similarity to the musical ‘Nine’ ends.

‘9′ features the voices of Elijah Wood, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and John C. Reilly and is directed by Shane Acker and produced by Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov. ‘9′ focuses on a group of dolls in a post apocalyptic world – sounds naff, looks amazing! Early signs from trailers and posters make this movie look beautiful and is defintely one to look out for.

Check out the trailer below. ‘9′ will be at a cinema near you 28th October.

Synopsis: Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton (The Corpse Bride, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Nightwatch »

Smith Slams Brit Health System

6 October 2009 1:11 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Veteran actress Liz Smith has slammed the British health system, branding it "hellish" and "disgraceful".

The Charlie and the Chocolate Factory star suffered a stroke earlier this year and spent months under doctors' care in hospital.

Smith claims the constant activity in her ward made it harder for her to recover.

She says, "Apart from when my daughter was born more than 50 years ago, I've never been in hospital. It was hellish. Other patients and nurses were noisy, demanding attention at all hours of the night. After the stroke I was in a ward of four and, at first, I was completely helpless - I couldn't move or even lift a glass of water.

"At the beginning, an acceptance of death flashed through my mind and I thought, 'If I go now, I've had a good life', but I lingered on and gradually built up strength."

And the 87 year old is equally as damning about the aftercare she has received now she is back at her London home recovering.

She adds: "For a few months, a nurse came every day to help me. I was also given a Zimmer frame (walker) and a special stool with arm rests to use in the kitchen. But in the four months I've been home, I haven't had one visit from my Gp (general practitioner), which I think is disgraceful."

Smith also reveals she is still trying to regain full speech: "It's maddening not to be able to fully express myself. It (my speech) is getting better, but I still get muddled." »

2009 Fantastic Fest Day 4 – Krabat, Burantino, and The Imaginarium Of Dr. Parnassus

5 October 2009 5:00 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Day 4 of Fantastic Fest was a heaping teaspoon of films that directly play to the name of the festival.  It was chockfull of imagination, magic, illusions, wonder, and even a living, breathing wooden baby.  It was one of the more satisfying days of film at this year’s fest overall, and was capped off by one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year for genre fans.

Continue to check back for pieces on the second half of the fest which provided 2 of the best films I’ve seen this year, as well as a reunion between Jean Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren; and no, that wasn’t one of the best films I’ve seen this year, but was amongst the most surprising.
