Joseph Gordon-Levitt on Uncertainty

13 November 2009 5:00 AM, PST | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is simply one of the most exciting twentysomething actors working at the moment. Whether he's playing a moody hustler in Mysterious Skin, his breakout role, or a lovestruck boyfriend in this summer's absolute pleasure, 500 Days of Summer, his performances are all united by an authentic intelligence and actorly committment. It makes him a joy to watch on screen, even when he's unrecognizable (save for that excellent, resonant voice!) as Cobra Commander in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, or a goofy teenage alien in the long-running sitcom 3rd Rock from the Sun. Who knows what will happen when he's in Christopher Nolan's next film, the hotly-anticipated Inception. In Gordon-Levitt's latest film, Uncertainty, directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel (The Deep End), have created an intriguing world for him and actress Lynn Collins (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), playing a couple called Bobby and Kate. They start their day on …

Monkey Uncaged: The Ten Worst Gay Movies of All Time!

13 October 2009 5:59 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Send it to aftereltonflyingmonkey@yahoo.com! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)

A Note from the Flying Monkey: Of the many emails I receive every week for my column, some are so good that they simply can’t be answered in just a few words. So from time to time, the editors have decided to let me out of the “cage” of that regular column, in a feature we’re calling Monkey Uncaged!

Q: What, in your opinion, is the worst gay film ever made? Why? – A.R.

A: A couple of months ago, I wrote a list of what I considered to be the ten most “important” gay male films – not what I felt were the “best,” mind you, but the ones that I felt had had the most impact either on the Glbt community or society at large. …

Following this assortment of carefully-selected news items, interested readers can find a refreshing pic of a hot man in underwear after the jump. Yes, we're serious.

Gregg Araki Gets Sexy Again

6 October 2009 1:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Bring on the Araki! After getting busy with candy-coated 3-ways in Splendor, Gregg Araki concocted a little yin and yang. First came the gritty drama of Mysterious Skin, which revealed a range we didn't know existed. Then came the exact opposite -- the ridiculous Anna Faris-starring stoner comedy Smiley Face. But now the cult director is heading back to the green sprouts of sexual exploration.

The Hollywood Reporter posts that Araki is shooting his latest feature, Kaboom, and he's tapped Roxane Mesquida (Fat Girl), Thomas Dekker (Sarah Connor Chronicles), Kelly Lynch (Charlie's Angels), and Rooney Mara (Youth in Revolt) to star. Not much is being revealed at this time, but here's what I could find online. As THR notes, Kaboom will focus on "the sexual awakening of a group of college students." Araki started the feature last month, Helen STELLaR is performing in a scene, and Ann Magnuson (Panic Room

Gregg Araki Goes With Sex For His Next Movie

6 October 2009 9:35 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Thus far in his career Gregg Araki has specialized in making tiny indies that critics love but nobody sees. Whether it's the gritty Joseph Gordon-Levitt drama Mysterious Skin or the mysteriously underseen comedy Smiley Face, the guy can't seem to catch on with major audiences. But you know what they say about sex and how it sells. THR reports that Araki's next project is Kaboom, about "the sexual awakening of a group of college students." Naturally, the kids he's selected for the cast are ridiculously attractive-- French actress Roxanne Mesquida, Sarah Connor Chronicles star Thomas Dekker, and Rooney Mara will be among the college kids, while Kelly Lynch (also ridiculously attractive) will fill in for an adult role. A movie about college kids having sex can turn into virtually anything, but mainly it'd be nice if it meant a hit for Araki. Then again, if his comedy starring Anna Faris

tMF Talkback: Leonardo DiCaprio and Joseph Gordon-Levitt - Two awesome actors in similar mode?

5 October 2009 9:05 PM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

If you're going to ask me which movie of Leonardo DiCaprio I remember the most, I'd say - 'What's Eating Gilbert Grape', and I'll have to add that even though Johnny Depp headlines the flick, both him and Leo stood out with their heartfelt performances- with DiCaprio earning an Oscar nom for his role. While I am inclined to say that Leo's role appears to be the more challenging, the acclaim he received stems from the fact that he really put himself into Arnie and he became that character.

Updates: Top 50 Hottest Young Actors - Shake, Rattle & Roll!

24 September 2009 7:24 AM, PDT | The Movie Fanatic | See recent The Movie Fanatic news »

It's almost time for an update of the Top 50 Hottest Young Actors list! Before our rundown featuring the actors below, let's have a look at some hitlists from across the web - Moviefone has a 25 under 25 and Fandango a 10 Young Actors to Watch list. ScreenDaily publishes Stars of Tomorrow and there is the annual European Shooting Stars celebrated as part of the Berlinale. The first 2 only consider Hollywood movies and cast, while ScreenDaily is exclusively for UK-based filmmakers and actors. The 'shooting star' programme is, of course, for Europeans.

- - -

- - - These hitlists are more than point of references to our own - they are inspiration to keep us on our feet and come up with a listing that consider all angles. I don't think anyone is naïve enough to list down and rank 50 young actors ( and 50 young actresses) and expect everyone to agree and be happy, …

If You See Only One Gay Indie Movie This Year, Make It “Patrik, Age 1.5”

15 September 2009 9:48 AM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Every year, it seems as if there’s only one small gay indie movie that breaks out of the pack and becomes the movie everyone talks about: Eating Out in 2004, Mysterious Skin in 2005, Another Gay Movie in 2006, Shelter in 2007, and Were the World Mine in 2008.

These are all pretty good movies, even if I didn’t always agree that they were the ones that most deserved to break out. (Last year, I liked Ciao more than Were the World Mine. And I liked Quinceañera more than either Shelter or Another Gay Movie.)

But I have a feeling that this year’s gay indie break-out movie will be Patrik, Age 1.5 – a Swedish film released last year in other countries, but only now being seen here in the U.S.

If it doesn’t break out, something’s truly not right in the world. It’s a flat-out wonderful movie.

In the film, …

The 50 Best Gay Movies (2009)

13 September 2009 5:40 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

Why aren’t there more good gay movies? We hear this complaint at AfterElton.com a lot, and we’ve even made it a few times ourselves (although we think the results of this poll prove that there are more good movies than many of us think!).

There are surely many reasons why more “mainstream” movies don’t include gay or bisexual themes, but no doubt one of them is heterosexual discomfort – not just discomfort on the part of audiences and network executives, but also discomfort on the part of critics and others to champion these films.

This is where our poll of AfterElton.com readers on the 50 Greatest Gay Movies comes in. We can think of no better way to encourage the creation of more good gay movies than to praise and support the existence of past good gay movies!

How does this list compare to our previous poll? …

Frabrice Du Welz to Helm First American Feature 'More'

12 September 2009 1:34 PM, PDT | bloody-disgusting.com | See recent Bloody-Disgusting.com news »

Belgian director Fabrice Du Welz is heading to NY for a dark psychological thriller, Bloody Disgusting was told in a press release announcing the film. After some resistance to working in the U.S., Belgian arthouse horror director Fabrice Du Welz has announced that he will be helming his first American feature. More is a dark psychological thriller set in downtown New York. For the auteur behind the moody, terrifying films Calvaire and Vinyan, the movie is another exploration of the world of madness. 21-year-old American Brady Corbet is set to play the lead in what Du Welz calls truly a breakout role. The director was immediately drawn to Corbet, who has worked with Michael Hanneke (Funny Games Us) and Gregg Araki (Mysterious Skin). Hes a bright young actor, full of potential, says Du Welz. As soon as I met him, I had a strong feeling. …

What's the Statute of Limitations For Mentioning Old Work?

24 August 2009 1:03 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

Scanning through my RSS feeds at the end of the weekend, my eye immediately fell on this gem from the BBC: "Talking Shop - Third Rock's Joseph Gordon-Levitt on his new film." 3rd Rock from the Sun. It's been eight years since Gordon-Levitt co-starred in that show, which wrapped just as he got out of his teens. Now he's pushing 30, and has had a multitude of work since then. Mysterious Skin, Brick, Stop-Loss, Miracle at St. Anna, 500 Days of Summer, and even G.I. Joe.

I get the reference -- to a degree. With the exception of G.I. Joe, Gordon-Levitt's work hasn't exactly been mainstream. But is aged mainstream work really more relevant than notable indie work, no matter how well-received said work is? Furthermore, it's hard to say these references are just for the sake of mainstream understanding when one of the questions is: "You're best known for Third Rock from the Sun. …

Iconic Gay Movie Roles

18 August 2009 6:59 PM, PDT | AfterElton.com | See recent AfterElton.com news »

It’s not exactly news that as a mass medium, cinema has the power to dramatically influence and change public attitudes toward minority groups, often making them accessible and relatable to the mainstream.

Unfortunately, that power works the opposite way as well and the movie industry, under a strict legion of ‘so-called’ decency laws commonly referred to as the Hays Code enacted in the 1930s, tended to frown upon positive representations of the gay community up until the 1960s. Gays were still present on screen, but more often than not, they were limited to stereotypes such as the drag queen/transvestite, the degenerate, the depraved killer and so forth.

As The Celluloid Closet (1995) brilliantly revealed, many gay and bisexual men had their motivations buried in subtext – virile characters like Ben Hur, for instance, were blatantly bisexual, but had to be inconspicuous about their love for the boys.

As the years rolled on, …

Who should play the next Jack Ryan?

15 August 2009 7:12 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

It’s been seven years since Tom Clancy’s legendary character Jack Ryan was last seen on screen, and many thought Ben Affleck’s rendition in The Sum of All Fears put the final nail in a once powerful franchise. But according to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, a Jack Ryan resurrection is in the works - and it won’t (contrary to Internet fodder) be George Clooney playing the suave government official. Why not? He’s too old. Di Bonaventura told MTV.com this week that a script has been submitted to Paramount, the studio that owns the franchise, and that it was “well-received,” but the story follows Ryan in his early 30s. Now you may be saying, “Isn’t the younger Ryan what got this franchise in trouble in the first place?” Well, let’s recap. After building a powerful cloak-and-dagger franchise in the early ’90s off the popular …
