Raising Hell: Style vs. Substance in The House Of The Devil

3 November 2009 3:22 PM, PST | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Having been bombarded with hype-filled reviews, I went into The House Of The Devil with high expectations. Unfortunately, I came away from the film feeling as disappointed as I felt after watching Oren Peli's over-hyped Paranormal Activity (which may have worked as a short film that took place over three nights, but was simply excruciatingly at feature length).

Ti West undeniably captured the look, sound and feel of indie horror films from the late '70s and early '80s. It's too bad that a lot of reviewers seem to have been so overcome with the film's style that they neglected to point out how little substance the film has. I guess I should have known better, given the trend in recent years where film analysis being replaced with how a film either appeals to or offends a reviewer's sense of nostalgia in what are supposed to be film reviews. »

Quickcard Review

Law Abiding Citizen

Directed by: F. Gary Gray

Cast: Gerard Butler, Jamie Foxx, Colm Meaney, Leslie Bibb

Running Time: 1 hr. 48 mins.

Rating: R

Release Date: October 16, 2009

Plot: A man (Butler) decides to take justice into his own hands after a plea bargain by the district attorney (Foxx) sets his family’s killers free.

Who’S It For? Either people are lazy or movies are really hard to make. There are moments of ugly violence in this film, and supposedly funny violence (when the phone rings, you’ll know what I mean). Simply rent Silence of the Lambs and Falling Down, then mash them together and maybe you’ll have what this movie was trying to achieve. Maybe.

Overall

“I am a law abiding citizen … I’m just a regular guy.” Really? Really? Let’s examine the facts Ok? And yes, some plot spoilers will be discussed here so »

Law Abiding Citizen (review)

15 October 2009 9:43 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

It had me at kaboom, this thorny moral conundrum of a film, and kept me for a long time. Kept me wondering who was the good guy and who was the villain until I started to dare to believe that maybe this would be the rare studio film that doesn’t feel the need to break things down so prettily. Kept me marveling at how the gray areas were staying gray and the complicated, no-easy-answers stuff kept getting more complicated. And then it lost me, nay, threw me overboard when it threw out all the tricksy pointedness and threw its lot in with those who are willing to throw out the baby of the American legal system with the bathwater of its problems. It’s all about the brokenness of our criminal justice system, this Law Abiding Citizen flick, which anyone can see is broken to the point at which »

Five Favorite Films with F. Gary Gray

14 October 2009 9:25 AM, PDT | Rotten Tomatoes | See recent Rotten Tomatoes news »

Director F. Gary Gray began his career creating music videos for several big name R&B and hip-hop artists in the early 90s, including Ice Cube, Tlc, and OutKast. In 1995, Gray made a big screen splash with a little stoner comedy called Friday, starring a pre-Rush Hour Chris Tucker and an up-and-coming Ice Cube, a friend of Gray's. Friday was a surprise hit, opening the doors for future high profile projects such as The Negotiator, 2003's The Italian Job remake, and Be Cool. This week, Gray continues his strong track record in the crime/action genre with Law Abiding Citizen, and... »

The Week in Film: "An Education" beats a "Retreat," plus new trailers

Thirty Republican senators voted down an amendment by Al Franken to take away government funds from defense contractors who prevent their employees from pursuing legal action for workplace assault or sexual discrimination, but luckily it passed anyway.

Meanwhile, David Letterman admitted to affairs with his employees, and his ratings are higher than ever.

Fix your boss with a “no means no” stare and let’s talk about this week’s movies.

The weekend’s big release is Couples Retreat, and while the resort-set movie always looks postcard-pretty — which is never a given, since lush Greek locales couldn’t save Mamma Mia! or My Life in Ruins from looking washed-out and awful — the script is rather problematic.

Four couples (Jason Bateman and Kristen Bell, Vince Vaughn and Malin Akerman, Jon Favreau and Kristin Davis, Faizon Love and Kali Hawk) fly off to a tropical paradise, but three of the pairs don »

A month shy of "Law Abiding Citizen" theatrical release, Overture Films has unleashed two brand new clips for viewing pleasure. Both of the clips, "Confessions" and "Situation", highlight on Clyde Shelton's revenge on the people who let loose his family's murderer. The "Confessions" clip comes out via Coming Soon.

I initially hadn't felt any interest for F. Gary Gray's Law Abiding Citizen, the director having ruined for me what great a sequel Be Cool could've been and star Gerard Butler looking like he's taken the easy paycheck route since 300. But having seen the trailer recently I have to say it looks nothing like the borefest I was expecting, And that darn thing's written by Kurt Wimmer; Ultraviolet's bad reviews aside, the dude's Equilibrium still kicks... »

Exclusive: 'Law Abiding Citizen' Poster Premiere

Click image below for full poster

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Law Abiding Citizen, the latest action film from Set It Off and The Italian Job director F. Gary Gray. Starring Jamie Foxx as a jaded public defender who cuts a deal with the murderer of Gerard Butler's wife and child in exchange for a testimony that will fry bigger underworld fish. Not satisfied with the swift indifference of the justice system, Butler then decides to go on a city wide rampage against both the criminals and the complacent bureaucrats that ruined his life.

Only Butler's plan for due justice is more complicated than any of the clueless courtroom regulars can imagine, and it isn't until the titular Law Abiding Citizen intentionally allows himself to be arrested that the full extent of his wrath comes to scale.

If the trailer is any indication, F. Gary Gray »

Uma Thurman's Latest Career Moves: Motherhood and a "Film Excellence" Award

5 September 2009 8:59 AM, PDT | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

Variety reports that the Boston Film Festival will award Uma Thurman with a "film excellence" award for her acting career.

Thurman has certainly had an eclectic, up-and-down career. Interestingly enough, she wasn't even on-screen for her debut film role: She lent her voice to the English-language dubbing of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, the 1984 feature from legendary Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki.

Later in the 80s, she also had small roles in The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Dangerous Liaisons. She was also the title female character in Henry & June, which in 1990 became the first movie to receive an Nc-17 (just after the rating was introduced to replace the X).

But of course, her breakout was as Mia Wallace in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, for which she received a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination. Since then, she's taken on a variety of interesting, off-beat roles (Kill Bill, Sweet and Lowdown, »

Labor Day weekend is coming up, and it's a holiday that marks the end of the summer movie season along with summer itself. All the kids are heading back to the classroom for another dreaded year of school and (for those in L.A. like myself) the weather starts to cool... hopefully. While fall usually isn't seen as a cinematic hotbed, with the blockbuster summer season over, there are still plenty of quality films to check out at the box office. This year we have Megan Fox's possessed body, a sensational animated film and a new zombie adventure. There's a lot more that I'm looking forward to this fall, so here is a comphrehensive look at what you can expect from this fall movie season.

Tom Felton On Joining 'Get Him to the Greek' And John Stamos' Birthday In Today's Twitter-Wood

Tom Felton sounds like he'll be lightening up his mood a bit for his next non-"Harry Potter" project. The normally moody-on-screen actor who plays Draco Malfoy will be jumping into Jonah Hill's "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" sequel "Get Him to the Greek" alongside Hill and Russell Brand, according to his Twitter updates.

Elsewhere in our feed, the Twitter-Wood report joins John Stamos' former "Full House" cast members Bob Saget and Dave Coulier in wishing the well-groomed actor a happy birthday. The "ER" star's own bday post snagged today's Twitter Pic of the Day, which I've inserted below via Saget's re-tweet and well-wishing. If you ever wanted to see how great Stamos' hair looked early on in life, now is your chance. Check it out, along with Richard Kelly's computer problems, an explosion from F. Can Science Possibly Be Cool?

11 August 2009 4:50 PM, PDT | Fast Company | See recent Fast Company news »

Last night in New York, at a TV launch party for Popular Science's "Future Of..." Debbie Myers, Science Channel general manager asked what was missing from science programming.

The overall response, from the 50-plus room full of mostly New York digerati, was resoundingly, "a show that was both entertaining and smart--not dumbed down." Well, if last night's Twitter response could be utilized as any sort of indicator, then in "Future Of..." Discovery and its Science Channel, along with PopSci, have stumbled upon the answer to that question.

According to the PopSci and Science Channel brass, the secret sauce was finding the right host. Someone who was, "chill yet energetic--chillergetic."

That host is Baratunde Thurston, a comedian, political pundit, and author, who guides us through the future of play, war, sex, security, and many other topics affecting human life. Thurston will conduct in-depth interviews with creative inventors, unconventional scientists, and talented entrepreneurs, »

question of the day: What’s your best tip for being cool at Comic Con?

22 July 2009 8:41 AM, PDT | www.flickfilosopher.com | See recent FlickFilosopher news »

Newsweek has a piece up today offering “Seven Ways to Be Cool at Comic Con” -- and its definition of cool is definitely... bizarre. This is what Newsweek thinks you’ll be competing with: Today, the cheerleading squad has gatecrashed the cafeteria's geek corner: Gwyneth Paltrow goes to Comic Con, for Spock's sake. And Jessica Alba, and Robert Pattinson, and thousands of other blowdried, Chiclet-toothed people from movie studios, television networks, record labels, and the like. How does one come off as an authentic insider, now that the event beckons so many Twitter-happy poseurs? We broke out our slide rule, protractor, and decoder ring to create a foolproof method to fitting in: Here’s one tip for Newsweek: Comic Con hipsters won’t be carrying slide rules. iPhones, yes. And maybe a slide-rule app on the iPhone (of course they exist!) But Jesus H. Christ on a teleporter pad, a slide-rule joke? »

It's as true today as it was when Waters directed Depp in 1990's "Cry Baby," the film that diminished his hated TV teen-idol status with the help of Iggy Pop and Ricki Lake.

But Waters' statement doesn't go far enough: We can never get enough of Johnny Depp. The man who started out on a cheesy '80s cop show has grown up to become our most enduring emblem »
