Takashi Shimizu Taking Satoshi Kon's Paranoia Agent Live Action?

16 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST | Twitch | See recent Twitch news »

Details? There aren't many, but Bloody Disgusting are reporting that Takashi Shimizu has signed on to produce a feature film version of Satshi Kon's stellar anime series Paranoia Agent.  Writer and director remain up in the air, as does format, though I can't see any point to Ju-On and The Grudge director Shimizu being involved unless this is going to be live action.

Phone Remake Finally Moving Forward. Happy Now?

3 December 2009 7:54 PM, PST | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

It’s been known that Imprint Entertainment has been after the remake rights to the South Korean horror movie “Phone” since April of 2009, but it looks like they’ve finally landed it. The remake was made official today in South Korea, where the Imprint bigwigs showed up for a press conference with original “Phone” director Ahn Byung-ki, who will be following in the footsteps of his Japanese compatriots Hideo Nakata and Takashi Shimizu by remaking his own movie for an American audience. Says Ahn: “I thought Korean horror films would succeed in Hollywood once Korean directors steer the remake projects, just as ‘The Grudge’ and ‘The Ring’ series were succcessful.” He is, of course, referencing Nakata directing the remake of his “The Grudge”, while Shimizu did likewise with his “Grudge” franchise. Ahn, for those unfamiliar with South Korean cinema, is famous for his long-hair ghost story horror movies, having previously …

Hack/Slash Gets a New Screenwriter

18 November 2009 1:33 AM, PST | Reelzchannel.com | See recent ReelzChannel news »

The movie adaptation of the comic book Hack/Slash is getting one step closer to realization. Bloody-Disgusting reports that Rogue Pictures has signed screenwriter Stephen Susco (The Grudge, the upcoming The Butcherhouse Chronicles) to write the script.

Hack/Slash is a twist on the slasher movie genre. Created by writer Tim Seeley, the comic's heroine, Cassie Hack, is a horror victim survivor who decides to hunt down other slashers with her brooding and mysterious partner Vlad. Kat Dennings (Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist, the upcoming Defendor) has expressed interest in the role, though no casting decisions have been made.

Production on Hack/Slash was set to begin early next year, but with the addition of a new screenwriter, that start date may be pushed back. Swedish music video director Fredrik Bond has also taken over the directing duties from Todd Lincoln.

‘Hack/Slash’ Adaptation Gets a New Screenwriter

17 November 2009 7:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

We may be miles away from getting a solo superheroine movie on the big screen, but at least one graphic heroine is getting close. The popular horror comic Hack / Slash has been in development with Rogue Pictures ever since 2006, and the movie inched a little closer this summer when Relativity hired Fredrik Bond to direct. But even a lass as fetching as Cassandra Hack requires a rewrite or two, and Bloody Disgusting reports that Stephen Susco is the latest to take a crack at adapting her gory chronicles.

If you’re a horror fan that’s unfamiliar with Hack / Slash, you owe it to yourself to become acquainted with the series. It centers Cassandra Hack, a survivor of a serial killer, whose mission in life is to wipe out all manner of monsters and slashers.  She comes in contact with some of horror’s most famous villains, and they come …

Grudge Writer Stephen Susco Newest Writer on Hack/Slash

16 November 2009 2:00 PM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Take the concept of Showtime's "Dexter", about a serial killer who kills other serial killers, turn him into a seductive vixen, and add a plethora of sex and you've got the comic series Hack/Slash. We first reported on this developing project over a year and a half ago when Justin Marks was set to adapt the series later followed by the announcement that newcomer Frederik Bond would be directing. Now Bloody Disgusting reports that Stephen Susco (of The Grudge 1 and 2) is the newest writer to tackle the adaptation that Relativity Media hopes will turn into a lucrative franchise for fans of both comic books and horror films. The comic centers on Cassie Hack, a woman who is the exact definition of the Final Girl in all horror slasher flicks. Hack not only survived, but she has become a killer of killers and travels to small towns across the country …

Stephen Susco Tapped For 'Hack/Slash' Screenplay

16 November 2009 12:01 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

"Hack/Slash" has seen its fair share of swaps on the long road to the big screen. The film saw a director switch when Fredrik Bond replaced Todd Lincoln following the sale of Rogue Pictures to Relativity Media from Universal Pictures. Now, "The Grudge" writer Stephen Susco has reportedly stepped in to write the screenplay which was previously entrusted to "Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li" scribe Justin Marks.

Relativity snagged Susco to pen a new draft of the "Hack/Slash" script, according to Bloody-Disgusting.com. Susco comes to the project with several horror credits under his belt, including the first two "Grudge" movies and the still-in-development "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D."

Judging solely from their past credits, moving from Marks to Susco may represent a shift in focus away from the lighter elements in "Hack/Slash." Marks' credits include un-filmed "He-Man" and "Voltron" scripts in addition to "Street Fighter. …

Hack/Slash Gets Its Writer

16 November 2009 8:34 AM, PST | LatinoReview | See recent LatinoReview news »

The last time we heard about the upcoming adaptation of the comic series Hack/Slash, it was a hot July and Fredrik Bond had just been confirmed as director. Now comes word that a writer has been chosen -- and that person is Stephen Susco. Susco, who wrote the screenplay for The Grudge, the 2004 American remake of the 2002 Japanese film Ju-on, is now faced with the task of turning a 26-issue comicbook series into a cohesive film that can, hopefully, kick off a franchise. First published in 2004, Hack/Slash focuses on a young woman named Cassie Hack who has made it her job to rid the world of "Slashers," humans (either alive or undead) who have the overwhelming need to kill. Though the film is likely still a long way off, I think it's safe for us to now engage in some speculative casting. So, let's hear it: who do …

Hack/Slash Skewers New Scribe

16 November 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Like many of the undead killers Cassie Hack has had to take down in Devil's Due Publishing's comic book series "Hack/Slash," Rogue Pictures' big screen incarnation refuses to die in development. Stephen Susco ( Red , The Grudge ) is the latest writer to hop aboard the property. He comes on the heels of Justin Marks, Todd Lincoln, Ben Magid and Martin Schenk. Lincoln was the first named attached and he was scheduled to direct until he stepped away to direct The Apparition for Dark Castle. Shock was able to confirm Susco's involvement, however, he was not available to comment about his take on the project and whether or not he was starting from scratch or simply revising the script that's currently out there. Hack/Slash centers on the aforementioned Cassie …

Bloody Disgusting learned today of some major news. Stephen Susco, who penned The Grudge and The Grudge 2, is currently doing a rewrite on Paramount Pictures' The Butcherhouse Chronicles, which is to be produced by Platinum Dunes (Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street). Frank Borin is no longer attached to direct. Originally written by Michael Hidalgo, Butcherhouse is a darkly comic horror stage show about four high school students out to discover the truth behind a mysterious old (haunted) property known as the Butcherhouse. In addition, Susco also has been developing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D for Twisted Pictures. No word on where that project is at. …

Swingers duo Vince Vaughn and Jon Favreau landed in the top spot with Couples Retreat. The comedy snatched an impressive $35 million from movie-goers despite bad reviews.

Woody Harrelson had to settle for second place with Zombieland. The horror-comedy took $15 million from Friday to Monday, dropping a decent 39%  - it looks like the film has a chance of hitting $100 million.

Neil Marshall & Sam Raimi To ‘Burst’ In 3D

10 October 2009 8:10 AM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Earlier this year, Sam Raimi brought us one of the most purely fun tongue-in-cheek horrors I’ve seen in a long time with Drag Me To Hell, a welcome return to his horror roots after many years of directing in other genres. However, as some you may know, Raimi has been prolific in the horror department on the producing side of things, with his Ghost House Pictures being responsible for such films as The Grudge, 30 Days of Night and Boogeyman.

And now, it appears that Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures will be teaming up with The Descent director, Neil Marshall, to bring us the rather over-the-top sounding Burst 3D.

Shock Till You Drop reports that Raimi and Rob Tapert, through their Ghost House Pictures, will be producing Burst 3D with Marshall at the helm, and with Lionsgate distributing the film worldwide. Word got to Styd earlier this week from Tapert himself, …

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to Get Rebooted Yet Again?

9 October 2009 7:42 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

With Michael Bay and his buddy Brad Fuller recently becoming too occupied with their other horror remakes to worry about another sequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, their Platinum Dunes production company has opted not to renew the rights to the franchise. Normally I would think this was great news, but instead it appears that a new deal is being worked out with Twisted Pictures, the same folks behind the never-ending Saw series. Yay. According to Variety [1], they are planning to restart the franchise all over again, with Stephen Susco (The Grudge, The Grudge 2) getting the call to "contemporize the storyline" for a new Leatherface film. As you might expect, this new Texas Chainsaw remake is also being planned as a 3-D release. Is it just me or is 3-D now becoming a new excuse to remake things that have already been remade? It's getting pretty ridiculous. Carl Mazzocone, …

Twisted Pictures Kidnaps the Texas Chainsaw Series

9 October 2009 7:12 AM, PDT | Atomic Popcorn | See recent Atomic Popcorn news »

In an interesting turn of events following Wednesday’s news of a partnership between horror hounds Platinum Dunes and Paramount Pictures, it seems that the rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series will trade hands from Michael Bay’s group to the house that Saw built, Twisted Pictures.

The deal is currently being sealed, and the series that Tobe Hooper birthed with his 1970s classic will soon become “a 3D film … scripted by Stephen Susco (The Grudge). Carl Mazzocone, Mark Burg and Oren Koules will be the producers.”

This sounds like a horrible idea, in my opinion. The Saw series went off the deep end a long time ago, and it seems insulting to trivialize what was once a powerful horror series with what many essentially see as a gimmick.

This is, by strange forces of coincidence, the second time that the series has traded hands two films into its …

Leatherface goes 3D with a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre series.

9 October 2009 2:34 AM, PDT | SoundOnSight | See recent SoundOnSight news »

Twisted Pictures, the production company behind the never-ending Saw series, is in talks with Lionsgate to buy the movie rights to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with plans to relaunch the series in 3D. Stephen Susco, a horror specialist who is most famous for penning the remake of The Grudge will write the script and Carl Mazzocone, Oren Koules and Mark Burg will produce. Tobe Hooper's 1974 original grossed more than $30 million in the United States, making it the most successful independent horror film at the time. It was eventually overtaken in 1978 by John Carpenter's Halloween, which grossed $47 million at the box office upon release. The film was generally well-received by critics and now decades later is cited as one of the scariest and most influential horror films ever made. Ridley Scott credited the film as an inspiration for his 1979 film Alien and French director Alexandre Aja and Rob Zombie

The Saw peeps to make Texas Chainsaw movies

The folks that make the Saw series of movies, Twisted Pictures, are looking to take over the franchise for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. That means that they will hold the rights to both Jigsaw and that evil, power tool wielding monster Leatherface.

The trade paper Variety revealed that the plan is to contemporize the storyline for a 3D film that would be scripted by Stephen Susco, who was behind The Grudge remake. Twisted will get a multi-picture deal for the franchise, which is more than the folks at Platinum Dunes, the people that were behind the last two movies, had. They were on a one picture deal.

Twisted Pictures Takes Control of Texas Chainsaw Massacre

9 October 2009 12:20 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Twisted Pictures, the production company behind the Saw franchise, is grabbing another series with a penchant for sharp, stabbing kills as Variety reports that they are taking control of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. Twisted is apparently trying to partner with Lionsgate in this new venture in an effort to "contemporize" (which isn't even a word) the storyline for a (surprise!) 3-D film to be scripted by The Grudge writer Stephen Susco. And if you didn't think that one more horror remake was enough, buckle your seatbelts kids because this deal is looking to get pregnant with a few films in a new series! Oh, joy! Platinum Dunes remade the original 1974 horror film back in 2003, and added on a prequel in 2006. Though they've had plenty of recent success with the recent Friday the 13th remake (which was surprisingly fun), and look to have a winner on their hands …

Twisted Ropes in Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Saws It Into 3D Sequels

Variety is reporting this evening that Twisted Pictures, the company behind the long-running Saw franchise, is in the midst of closing a deal to take over the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise. The production house is currently working with its partner Lionsgate, which has distributed all of the Saw films, to acquire the rights, which were most recently held under the New Line and Platinum Dunes banners, who released both the TCM remake in 2003 and TCM: The Beginning in 2006. The previous deal had been made on a per-pic basis with "Chainsaw" rights-holders Bob Kuhn and Kim Henkel, the latter of whom wrote the original 1974 pic with director Tobe Hooper. Also, the deal is said to be for multiple films. But when talks with Platinum Dunes broke down, they turned to Twisted, a deal that would bring both Leatherface and Jigsaw into the same sadistic family. Twisted's plan is to contemporize the storyline for a 3D film that would …
