Director, producer, and choreographer Adam Shankman has landed two new Hollywood gigs. The first is an adaptation of the Broadway musical “Rock of Ages” for New Line Cinema, and the other is producing the upcoming 82nd telecast of the Academy Awards.
“Ages” is a jukebox of 80’s rock anthems from Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Steve Perry, Poison and Asia. The film centers on an aspiring musician and an actress who fall in love against the backdrop of classic rock.
According to Variety, Shankman hopes this will be, “Mamma Mia! for dudes.” Maybe it’s just me, but he might be overestimating how many “dudes” want to see choreographed dance moves to “We Built This City.”
Shankman, who directed Hairspray and is preparing for Hairspray 2, is no stranger to song and dance films and is currently a permanent judge on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance. »

If yesterday's trailer for Jackie Chan's family action comedy The Spy Next Door didn't excite (or depress) you enough, here's the official poster for the flick. And if you're wondering how this one differs from The Pacifier, it's simple: this one has a housepig instead of a houseduck. And Billy Ray Cyrus. And more people getting whacked with frying pans. Plus Vin Diesel isn't Chinese. I don't think... »

Choreographer-turned-filmmaker Adam Shankman has fortunately found another musical to direct following his success with the "Hairspray" remake. Variety reports that he's set to helm the movie version of Broadway's "Rock of Ages," which incorporates popular '80s rock anthems, such as Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" and Twisted Sister's "We're Not Gonna take It," into a Sunset Strip-set love story about an aspiring musician and a girl who's just off the bus.
Shankman, who also made the hilarious online short "Prop 8: The Musical" and will be doing a "Hairspray" sequel, feels he knows the material well enough from having worked on an Extreme video back in the early '90s and from growing up with a dad in the music biz. He also was a choreographer on "Boogie Nights," which means he probably has experience setting a scene to Night Ranger's "Sister Christian," one of the songs appropriated »

Adam Shankman is a busy, busy man. Since directing 2005’s The Pacifier and Cheaper By the Dozen, Shankman has barely had a break, taking on numerous projects directing, producing, and choreographing films, as well as being a judge on the hit show So You Think You Can Dance. Now Shankman is adding another project to his résumé with a film version of the Broadway musical Rock of Ages.
Rock of Ages has been incredibly successful on the stage (the play has earned five Tony nominations), and if his work with Hairspray is any indicator, Shankman is just the man to make the stage production translate to the big screen.
With films such as dance flicks Step Up and Step Up 2: The Streets and the hit musical Hairspray to his credit, Shankman has had experience working in genres that may have less widespread appeal than some. This is part of »

Let’s be honest, everybody who had ever sat through an episode of Reno 911 in its 6 years on the air knows how heartbreaking it was when the show got canceled two months ago. The show kept the flame of MTV’s The State burning for over a decade after the show had originally aired. It looks like NBC feels the same way, as they have hired Reno creators Thomas Lennon and Ben Garant for a new comedy series.
Lennon and Garant (who played Reno’s Jim Dangle and Travis Junior respectively) signed a deal with NBC and Universal Media Studios for a pilot commitment, which means if nothing else, we will get one episode. The team will write, star, and executive produce the series.
Those who aren’t fans of Reno or The State may know the written work of Lennon and Garant from the two Night at the Museum films, »

“Reno 911!” was a great show that never should have lasted as long as it did. After one of the funniest first seasons in TV history, the show struggled to maintain an identity and stretched the talents of its very talented improv performers to their absolute limits. Head writers Thomas Lennon, Robert Ben Garant, and Kerri Kenney-Silver were consistently the funniest and most enjoyable to watch, and now Lennon and Garant have teamed up to pen and star in a multi-camera comedy for NBC. More after the jump.
The show’s premise is being kept secret for the time being, so all we know is that Lennon will be the principal star, with Garant in a supporting role. The two will write and executive produce the show, and have signed a talent deal with both NBC and Universal Media Studios that will include other projects. This is on top of the »

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Even though Film Junk followers would probably prefer to read current Tiff film reviews than a review of an older science fiction film, I have decided to submit this review of “Babylon A.D.” And at the risk of further enforcing the view that I have a poor taste in films, my review is generally a favorable one in contrast to popular opinion. I was aware that this film did poorly at the box office, but I didn’t realize how many bad reviews this film received until after I had watched the film and checked out the reviews on the Internet. The reason why I watched this film is that I try to watch all the high profile science fiction movies regardless of audience reception. »

Columbia has hired Ericson Core (Invincible) to direct xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, the third installment in the action/extreme sports series. Core replaces Rob Cohen who opted out after a verbal commitment to come back. Vin Diesel is still set to reprise his starring role.
According to THR, the studio wants to move fast while Diesel is still a box office draw. They had better hurry. The sequel will first need to deal with the question “Didn’t Vin Diesel get chopped up by a helicopter in the second movie?” Ice Cube took over and tried to continue the already ridiculous concept. Now Diesel is back, and he’s pissed. Probably.
This isn’t the first time Diesel has gone back to his action hero roots. He recently reappeared in Fast & Furious, the fourth of the car-racing movies. Somehow it was a surprise hit. Diesel has also been »

News has surfaced, by way of The Hollywood Reporter, stating that a new director has been found for xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, the third installment in Columbia Pictures’ action series. Last year both star Vin Diesel and Rob Cohen (director of the first installment) agreed to join forces for a third film, but in June this year Cohen bailed to direct Medieval. The new director is Ericson Core (Invincible), who’s worked with Diesel before as the Cinematographer on The Fast and the Furious.
Diesel starred in the original xXx back in 2002, but both he and director Cohen skipped the second film, xXx: State of the Union, starring Ice Cube and directed by Lee Tamahori.
Diesel was somewhat of a hot name at the time of xXx, but for some reason he thought it best to skip both the sequel and two of the Fast and the Furious »

Cisco, Corning, Ibm, Intel, and Schwab have weathered worse economic storms. Here are five strategies they're using to come out of this one even stronger.
Surviving this economic crisis is like going to see the latest Vin Diesel movie: Sure, it's bad, but believe it or not, others have seen worse. How do the grizzled vets get through the ordeal? They don't just sit there.
Major companies such as Charles Schwab, Cisco, Corning, Ibm, and Intel have all experienced crises more severe and life-threatening than our current one, making today's maelstrom for them more akin to Fast & Furious than, say, The Pacifier. Nothing creates fresh perspective like having stared into the abyss and living to tell the tale.
No wonder, then, that each of these companies is approaching today's meltdown with distinctive strategies for not only surviving but also thriving. Intel and Corning are protecting their core advantages at all costs. »

In 2006, it was the coolest idea ever squandered by Hollywood: The American Museum of Natural History comes alive at night! But you can only experience it via an emotionally phony father-son sitcom... one that misses the real magic of the museum to boot! As is always the case with sequels, the filmmakers clearly felt the need to top themselves with their second outing, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian. And I must concede that director Shawn Levy (The Pink Panther, Cheaper by the Dozen) and screenwriters Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon (Balls of Fury, The Pacifier) have indeed done just that. They found an even cooler idea -- the biggest, most diverse museum collection on the planet comes alive at night! -- and they squandered it even worse: They turned it into a morass of Three Stooges-level slapstick and juvenile-style playground taunting. There’s nothing wrong »

Video Game Rating: 4.0/5.0 Chicago – Vin Diesel should stick to making video games. After headlining last month’s “Wheelman” and this month’s “The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena,” I have to admit that I like the actor more as a video game hero than I do as a movie star. “Athena” gives fans the most bang for their buck of anything the actor has been involved with in years.
Diesel’s last several feature films - “Fast & Furious,” “Babylon A.D.,” “The Pacifier” - haven’t exactly been his best work. The actor who once seemed so charismatic in films like “Boiler Room” and “Pitch Black” seemed bored by his own routine. However, with two very good games released within weeks of each other, Diesel has proven that he can be a reliable commodity in the gaming world.

In honour of the soon-to-be $70 million-grossing Fast and Furious, last week we asked you to pick your favourite movie from the relatively painful filmography of Mr. Vin Diesel. The results from said poll placed Pitch Black at the top by a fairly large margin, followed by The Fast and the Furious and The Chronicles of Riddick. It's interesting that his older films generally seem to rank higher than the new ones (Babylon A.D. being dead last). What do you think, did Vin Diesel squander his early opportunities, and now that Fast and Furious has revitalized his career, do you see him doing the same thing all over again? 1. Pitch Black -- 41.1% 2. The Fast and the Furious -- 13.9% 3. The Chronicles of Riddick -- 13% 4. Boiler Room -- 8.7% 5. xXx -- 6.1% 6. Find Me Guilty -- 5.6% 7. A Man Apart -- 4.3% 7. The Pacifier -- 4.3% 9. Knockaround Guys -- 2.2% 10. Babylon A.D. -- 0.9% »

With the release of Fast & Furious this weekend, I think it's time we revisited the filmography of one of the greatest actors working in Hollywood today. Vin Diesel has delivered tour-de-force performances in everything from xXx to The Chronicles of Riddick, and showed his versatility in The Pacifier. Okay, not really, but let's honest, he has been in a few enjoyable movies over the years... which one is your favourite? Cast your vote now in the poll below. (Note: I excluded Saving Private Ryan and The Iron Giant because I don't think they're really "Vin Diesel" movies. Plus they'd blow everything else out of the water.) Having spilled the bean on the possibility of two "The Chronicles of Riddick" sequels being developed previously, action movie star Vin Diesel gives updates on the proposed films status. "Maybe we're too tight-lipped about the next Chronicles of Riddick film," he told GameSpot of when details could be coming out, "and I think circa the release of [Assault on Dark Athena] that's probably when you'll start hearing more about the next Riddick film."
"It is underway and I almost think it's a coincidence that we haven't heard anything, that there hasn't been a lot of public stuff on the Riddick movie," the 41-year-old added during the interview for the upcoming release of "The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena" game. "But it's interesting that you've made that comment."
He furthermore said, "Maybe we've been too tight-lipped about the movie, and you'll probably hear a lot more about it as this game is released. »

First, a word to Paul Walker. Man, we know you're only doing it for the cold hard cash, and you're hardly losing cred for starring in another action movie - so why the furious face? But here we can see, in all its one-sheeted glory, that Fast and Furious is back (not to be confused with The Fast and The Furious). The tagline promises - New model. Original parts. So, back in the fast lane are all the old favourites: Walker as Brian O'Conner - who since the previous installment, has continued to cover his Tommy Hilfiger face with a scowl and stubble in various action and war movies; Vin Diesel - whose return as Dominic Toretto looks mildly perturbed at best - and has been making light of his situation since Tokyo Drift with movies such as The Pacifier and Babylon A.D.; plus the girls - Jordana Brewster as »

Adam Sandler's latest movie finds the funny man collaborating with the fine folks at Disney . if you can believe that! The end result is the gentle but tepid family film Bedtime Stories.
In Bedtime Stories, Sandler plays Skeeter Bronson, a hotel handy man who entertains his niece and nephew by telling them fantastical stories that feature elements inspired by his own underappreciated existence. As the children become more and more enamored by his tales of fancy, they begin adding their own little twists to the stories. To Skeeter's great amazement, many of these odd twists . including a massive gum-ball storm - become a reality. Is there a higher power at work, or are these strange happenings merely bizarre coincidences?
Bedtime Stories is harmless enough. In fact, it is by far the least crude of Sandler's infantile catalog, and this is coming from a fan. Infantile and Sandler go together like chocolate and peanut butter. »

Adam Shankman (The Pacifier, The Wedding Planner) will produce an adaptation of the 1958 musical Bye Bye Birdie. Shankman directed the hit musical Hairspray in 2007 and is a former choreographer. Columbia Pictures hopes the musical vet will breathe some new life into the long-gestating adaptation, which has undergone a number of different incarnations, including a proposed re-imagining with a hip-hop star in the lead.
Shankman's next directorial efforts are Bob: The Musical and The 8th Voyage of Sinbad.
