In lieu of a traditional review of Rob Marshall's Nine, which opens Friday in limited release and then expands a week later for the Christmas box office rush, I've opted for random thoughts, nine of them, strung together. This is a survival tactic. I've spent so long obsessing on the movie prior to its release (prior to even its casting given my enthusiasm for the mid-Aughts Broadway revival) that a review proper couldn't contain me. It would kill me. I got no choreography, I'll just have to spit out my words however they come out. Picture them flying from the blog like sand from Fergie's fingers
Beeeeeeeeee Italian. Beee Italian....
Story. The plot of Nine, as you may know, is about a film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) suffering an artistic crisis: His production team is ready to shoot, his costume designer (Judi Dench) is ready to stitch, his »

Director/producer/choreographer Rob Marshall is no stranger to the challenges of making successful musicals and movies. He triumphed with “Chicago,” which won six Oscars, including Best Picture, and another three for “Memoirs of a Geisha.”
His new musical is titled “Nine, ” based on the Tony Award-winning 1982 Broadway production of “Nine” that was based on Federico Fellini's classic "81/2," sta »

Nine director Rob Marshall has messed around in the world of traditional narrative film before, with Memoirs of a Geisha, an exceedingly beautiful picture to look at, but not a tremendously involving one. However, Pirates of the Caribbean brings with it a different set of expectations.
Marshall was, for some, a surprise choice for the fourth movie, which won't include Keira Knightley and/or Orlando Bloom, two losses the franchise can easily overcome. But Marshall tells ComingSoon we shouldn't count our pirate chickens just yet.
"We're still trying to figure out if it's going to all happen," he said. "If it happens - I think Johnny's doing [The Tourist] with Angelina Jolie in the spring - so if it happens, we'll start in the summer, and we'll see. I'm excited. If it happens, it happens. I'd be thrilled. I just love Johnny and I'm excited about the genre." »

James Cameron’s Avatar: best long-toothed ensemble blue cast The nominations for the 2010 SAG Awards will be announced tomorrow morning by Michelle Monaghan and Chris O’Donnell. As usual, expect some surprises. In the past, SAG voters — only a relatively small group of SAG members vote on the nominations — have made unexpected choices such as Dev Patel for best supporting actor in Slumdog Millionaire, best actress nods for Ziyi Zhang in Memoirs of a Geisha and Patricia Clarkson in The Station Agent, and best ensemble nods for 3:10 to Yuma, Hairspray, and Hustle & Flow. My SAG Award predictions are probably as accurate as the ones I made for the Golden Globes a while back. In [...] »

Bit of the good ole Chinese-style publicity stunt today on Chinese news portals, with more casting news concerning Wong Kar-Wai's upcoming Yip Man biopic 一代宗师 (The Great Master). It's not the news most everyone was waiting for - a confirmation on the Brigitte Lin issue, or lack thereof - but I guess it's good enough: the new name which is emerging is Gong Li, who would join forces with Wong for the first time since Eros. Local media reports indicated yesterday that Gong would play the head matron of a martial arts clan, but her management played coy, saying that they haven't received any offer, although - and here's the key - they're on good terms with Wong Kar-Wai, so they'd certainly be open to the idea of participating in the film. They say any final announcement will come from Wong's side, so it's probably a matter of time before ink is spilled. »

Last year the DC Film Critics Association gave Slumdog millions (of prizes). This year they express their desire to fly George Clooney's friendly skies. I'm not here to judge (well not in this particular sentence) as I'm totally in love with Up in the Air, too. But then I just saw it and am still fanning myself from the heat coming off of Clooney & Farmiga. I need a little distance and a cold shower before I commit to any "best!" notions. Thankfully I allow myself that. Most organizations do not. Hence the hasty decision making.
I didn't share their nominees with you yesterday because I found them vaguely embarrassing, like the assembled journos all just came in late and frazzled having left their notes on the Metrorail. Instead of thinking it through they scribbled the names of Oscar buzz du jour types and called it a day. My point »

We finally have some commercials for Nine, which is pretty distinguishable from the other Best Picture hopefuls because of its major league cast and it's the only musical anywhere near the running. If you've been following our coverage of Nine, you won't see a whole lot that's new in these ads, but if not, you'll be clued in as to why this film has been on the Academy Awards radar for a while.
To me, the focus should be Dion Beebe's cinematography. He was nominated for director Rob Marshall's Chicago, and won a couple years later for Marshall's Memoirs of a Geisha, so maybe the second and third time is the charm. The movie has good odds in the supporting actress category, too, but I think this is the one category where it has the biggest advantage over the competition.
You can see a little bit of what »

Our thanks to Diva Velez for the following interviews with Ninja Assassin star and director Rain and James McTeigue.
The Lady Miz Diva: Ninja Assassin is a really violent, bloody film. Were you concerned that so much of your fan base, which consists of younger kids and people who might not usually go to this type of movie, wouldn't be able to see your big Hollywood film?
Rain: Yeah, I know, but it's gonna be huge. I believe they will like my movie. I am a little bit worried, but it's something different from what I've done, so it's interesting that way. And I believe more male fans will be interested in this movie.
Lmd: Raizo is a full of a lot of rage. What did you find inside yourself to create that constant anger he feels?
R: Well, before the shooting the Wachowskis and James McTeigue always »

Think of the look of any Johnny Depp character from the Tim Burton universe -- from Edward Scissorhands' bondage buckles to Ed Wood's angora sweaters to the breeches and waistcoasts of Sleepy Hollow's Ichabod Crane -- and Colleen Atwood was the woman who envisioned and executed it. One of the most sought-after and gifted costume designers working in Hollywood today, Atwood has been nominated for an astounding eight Academy Awards, of which she's won two -- for Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha. Just reading about her 2009 slate is enough to render you exhausted: good thing she had Depp's measurements seared into her memory when work began on Michael Mann's Public Enemies (which comes out on Blu-ray and DVD Dec. 8th); then there was the business of putting all those other Oscar winners into revealing outfits for Nine; and let's not forget Mr. Burton, who called »

Rob Marshall (Memoirs of a Geisha, Chicago) confirmed that he’ll be working for Disney / Bruckheimer to bring us Pirates of the Caribbean 4 which is entitled “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides“
After a recent screening of Marshall’s upcoming musical “Nine“, remake of Federico Fellini’s classic 8 1/2, host Nora Ephron asked him about his next project, to which Marshall replied that he will helm “Pirates of the Caribbean 4.”
“You know, it’s something that I was offered and never in the world thought I would do but then I was like ‘why not?’,” he said. “I’m doing Pirates of the Caribbean.”
Marshall also directed “Chicago” in 2002, which won six Oscars and was nominated for seven more.
Pirates 4 is to be loosely based on the book On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers, which was optioned by Disney many years ago. The plot of the novel follows a puppeteer named John Chandagnac who, »

If you read a lot of movie blogs, chances are that you've seen plenty of suggestions about this week's top rumor, the question of who should play The Black Cat in Spider-Man 4. You can throw all of those suggestions out the window. Because as you know, it isn't worth reading until we weigh in on the topic. And with that, I would like to suggest our own list of ladies who should be wearing tight outfits and sneaking into NYC banks. Initially the rumor was that Wedding Crashers starlet Rachel McAdams would be slipping on a tight cat burglar outfit and playing Felicia Hardy -- the noble, sweet and oh-so-dangerous villainess who once captured the heart of Spider-man. But that was squashed as an "internet rumor." As well, there has also been word that Julia Stiles has read for the part. But nothing is certain for director Sam Raimi, as »

It's official, Johnny Depp just can't say no to mountains of cash. The actor reportedly signed a massive $33.6 million pay deal to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fourth "Pirates of the Carribean" installment. Producers were so desperate to bring Depp back for the fourth film sub-titled "On Stranger Tides" they offered him a minimum $33.6 million paycheck. The actor will also receive a share of the ticket sales, which we don't think will be as much as the studios are predicting. It's also been reported that Rob Marshall has landed in the director's chair for the fourth picture. Marshall's credits include "Chicago" and "Memoirs of a Geisha". We'll keep you posted as more news comes in.

Disney has put its remake of the 1954 Oscar-winning classic 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea into dry dock, reports Variety.
The project, titled Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, had been due to start filming in February.
But it has now been halted indefinitely and director McG is no longer attached to the project. He is instead working on a drama for Warner Bros, called Dead Man Running.
Rob Marshall says he is excited to be working with Johnny Depp on Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth film in the franchise. The director, who previously captained Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha, told AICN: "It's something that I was offered and never in the world thought I would do but then I was like, why not?"
Depp had previously said his his keenness to return as Jack Sparrow had been diminished by the departure of Disney chairman Dick Cook, »

What began as a rumor back in July of this year has finally been confirmed by director Rob Marshall, who spilled the beans on his involvement with Pirates of the Caribbean 4 while holding a DGA screening of his latest film, Nine. Marshall will replace director Gore Verbinski, who steered the ship on the first three Pirates films, which cleared over a billion dollars in domestic box office receipts combined. According to a tipster at AICN, not only did Marshall confirm that he's on board, but he also said that he's looking forward to working with Johnny Depp. Here's a clipping from the report: I just saw the DGA screening of Rob Marshall's latest movie, Nine tonight and stayed for the Q & A after, so I thought I'd write in to share my thoughts. First, let me just get the Huge scoop out of the way: when asked about his next project (by Nora Ephron, who »

So it was first rumored back in July that Oscar nominated director Rob Marshall (of both Chicago and Memoirs of a Geisha previously) might be taking over Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean franchise in place of Gore Verbinski. As much as I didn't want this to happen, it turns out that it definitely is Marshall's job (at least as long as Disney convinces Johnny Depp to return and shoot this next year). Marshall recently appeared at a DGA screening of his new film Nine (another musical) and, according to a report on AICN (via The Playlist), confirmed that Pirates of the Caribbean was next for him. Here's what AICN's reader said. I just saw the DGA screening of Rob Marshall's latest movie, Nine tonight and stayed for the Q & A after, so I thought I'd write in to share my thoughts. Afm* fun continues with the first images and full synopses for All Good Things starring Ryan Gosling and Kirsten Dunst, Pirhana 3D starring Elisabeth Shue and Richard Dreyfuss, Shanghai starring John Cusack and Ken Watanbe, and The Fighter starring Christian Bale, Mark Wahlberg, and Amy Adams. These are all films that should be on your radar because there’s a good chance that these films will be getting some major marketing when they hit theaters.
I write and read about films every day and with the exception of The Fighter, these films weren’t really on my radar. After reading the synopses and seeing some shots from these movies, I’ll definitely be on the lookout for further news about them. Hit the jump to check out debut photos and what you need to know about these upcoming flicks.

It's not a great big news day and she's really hot, so naturally, we'll tell you about the latest Zhang Ziyi project. Can you believe it's almost been a full decade since Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon? It's the biggest foreign language film ever, the only one to ever top $100 million in the Us. That's Zhang's introduction to most western audiences, although you have to see her in Zhang Yimou's The Road Home from one year earlier. Heartbreaking.
She has not been a major American star, even though she did get her chance with Memoirs of a Geisha, but some of her other foreign language films - Hero and House of Flying Daggers - have also made an impression on audiences here in the states. Hero, in fact, is the third-highest-grossing foreign language film ever.
For her next trick, The Hollywood Reporter says Zhang will produce and star in the Wayne Wang »
