Top 5 Writers/Creators Currently On Television

30 December 2009 6:21 PM, PST | TVovermind.com | See recent TVovermind.com news »

Alan Ball, True Blood

The debate was fierce in TV Overmind back offices but I managed to come out with a list of the Top 5 Writers/Creators Currently On Television.  The stringent criteria were three-fold and eliminated several contenders.

Qualification #1 – The writer/creator must have had more than one hit, which knocked Marc Cherry of "Desperate Housewives" and "Supernatural"s Eric Kripke out of the running.

Qualification #2 – The shows must be original entities and not spin-offs.  Sorry Shonda Rhimes of "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice", and Russell T. Davies of "Doctor Who", "Torchwood" and "The Sarah Jane Adventures".

Qualification #3 – They must currently have a series on the air.  David E. Kelley's "Boston Legal" ended in 2008, so his vast legacy, which includes "Picket Fences", "Ally McBeal", and "The Practice", doesn't get a shot.  And Aaron Sorkin ("Sports Night", "The West Wing", and "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip") is also between projects. »

'Rex Is Not Your Lawyer': Psyched for the David Tennant-Jerry O'Connell pilot?

8 December 2009 12:02 PM, PST | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

When news broke that Jerry O'Connell had replaced Heroes' Sendhil Ramamurthy opposite Doctor Who's David Tennant in the NBC pilot Rex Is Not Your Lawyer on the eve of production (Ramamurthy is said to have had a scheduling conflict), I was concerned. Like everyone who loves the fact that O'Connell is currently enrolled at L.A.'s Southwestern Law School, I was worried it meant that he was dropping out. Rest easy. A rep for O'Connell (pictured left) tells EW that he intends to juggle both the show, set at a law firm, and law school, if the pilot gets picked up. »

James Spader Plays Dark, Familiar Creep In Broadway Debut

26 November 2009 5:47 AM, PST | Huffington Post | See recent Huffington Post news »

"Cultivate the appearance of contrition," the character Jack Lawson, a lawyer, tells a white client accused of raping a black woman in "Race," a new play opening on Broadway next Sunday. As uttered with don't-waste-my-time iciness by the actor James Spader, the clipped and merciless directive telegraphs not only that this is dialogue by David Mamet, but also that it is set in the kind of up-for-grabs moral universe that Spader characters have been occupying in Hollywood for years. Fox Takes Aim @ Human Target

25 November 2009 2:11 AM, PST | HollywoodNorthReport.com | See recent HollywoodNorthReport.com news »

According to VancouverFilm.Net, Human Target, the slick, Vancouver-lensed DC Comics adaptation, directed by Simon West, written by Jonathan E. Steinberg, has been given the coveted American Idol lead-in on the Fox network for 2010. American Idol has ranked #1 in the Nilesen Ratings for five consecutive seasons. The programing decision is part of the network's midseason schedule, which lays out the lineup to April. Human Target stars Mark "Boston Legal" Valley as the DC Comics character, created in 1972, by writer Len Wein and illustrator Carmine Infantino, as detective/bodyguard 'Christopher Chance' who impersonates clients to eliminate threats, becoming the human target. Writer Peter Milligan and illustrator Edvin Biukovic revived the character in 1999 for a four-issue limited series followed by the graphic novel "Human Target: Final Cut", an ongoing series that lasted 21 issues. NCIS is not short on great guest stars. Most recently, the drama announced that Robert Wagner would appear as Tony's father on the show's 150th episode.

Now, it's been revealed that a well-known, vertically-challenged actress is also coming on board the top-rated show on TV.

Meredith Eaton - who has appeared on CSI and House; and who enjoyed an extended run on Boston Legal - will portray Abby's former college friend and fellow lab tech on an upcoming installment. She'll visit Abby for advice.

Pauley Perrette (Abby) and Eaton are close friends in real life. »

News: Is this an American David Tennant I see before me?

4 November 2009 6:12 AM, PST | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Blogging while sick is always a dicey affair. You are just never quite sure if what you are reading is true or if it is merely the delusional imaginings of a fevered mind. Such is the case when I read that David Tennant, late of Doctor Who fame, is heading to American TV as the lead in a new pilot for NBC called Rex Is Not Your Lawyer.

Hurling the pile of used tissues aside, I clicked further, discovering that, yes indeed, Tennant is set to take the lead as an American lawyer who suffers from panic attacks. It's one of those hour-long dramedys, in the Boston Legal vein, so expect the occasional dancing baby and song and dance routine.

Or maybe I'm just seeing that. Theraflu does that, you know.

Joe Quesada Talks ‘Captain America’ At Big Apple Comic Con

21 October 2009 10:00 AM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Marvel’s chief fanboy, Joe Quesada, was at this year’s Big Apple Comic-Con to talk about what’s going on in the Marvel universe.  With the recent accusation of Marvel by Disney it’s hard to deny the company’s success. So, just how does Marvel continue to compete against DC it’s competitors?  According to Quesada, “The way we differentiate ourselves is by not sucking.”

Yes, you read that correctly. Marvel’s Editor-in-Chief claims “not sucking” is a sound business strategy. Okay, I can’t argue that point. From a business perspective not sucking, or at the very least sucking less then your competition, should be somewhere in the business plan and/or mission statement.

Unfortunately for Quesada, someone at Marvel hasn’t read said business plan.  If they had we, the fans, would not have been forced to endure Ghost Rider, either Fantastic Four film or the »

FX Lab: A Conversation with Andrew Clement

15 October 2009 11:26 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

From working FX on SNL and Letterman to creating monsters for Dark Shadows, Andrew Clement has some tales to tell. Recently-wrapped on the reboot of A Nightmare On Elm Street (for which he redesigned Freddy Krueger), Jason Anders caught up with Clement for a candid conversation about his world of Creative Character Engineering.

Ja/Fangoria: So let's begin with your work as a make-up artist for NBC's Saturday Night Live; tell me about the work you did for the show, how you became involved, the memories you have being around the cast of actors, and which seasons you were involved in.

AC: I wish I had been involved in the first few seasons of SNL, it was such a fertile time for the show. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I’m not quite that old. As it is, I watched those shows in Jr. High and High School, and now I have the DVD’s. »

Alynda Wheat's Beat Cop: 'Three Rivers' might need some CPR

My name is Alynda and I am an organ donor. There, now everybody knows and we don't have to go through any confusion or sticky sitches in the hospital, Three Rivers-style. What did you think of the Rivers debut, the few of you who watched it? (If you missed it, by the way, you can catch it here.) I'm still trying to decide if I'm giving it too much leeway because star Alex O'Loughlin is in my imaginary-boyfriend stable (and we're pretty serious, with his having met my mom and all). But I'll try to be objective. Let's start »

First report, photos from Little Murder

1 October 2009 5:10 PM, PDT | Fangoria | See recent Fangoria news »

Deep in the heart of downtown Detroit, director Predrag “Gaga” Antonijevic is conjuring up a slice of the South. The much-lauded Serbian filmmaker is lensing the supernatural thriller Little Murder, his second English-language movie, in the Motor City despite the fact that it’s set in New Orleans, post-Katrina.

Antonijevic and co. are bringing to life the story of an alcoholic cop (Josh Lucas from Session 9 and the upcoming Tell Tale, seen in the exclusive pics here) who is observing a suspect (Iron Man’s Terrence Howard) from a house inhabited by the ghost of a murdered cellist (Lake Bell of TV’s Surface and Boston Legal). “It’s not an obvious plot,” Bell tells Fango, “but a strange little movie where every day that goes by, I learn more about what, tonally, we’re making. John Barrowman Edges Out Alexander Skarsgard In 'Captain America' Casting Poll!

Maybe it's some sort of "Field of Dreams" thing, but apparently if you ask who should play Captain America, they will respond. And by "they" I mean every-freakin'-one.

Clocking in as the most popular poll we've ever run on Splash Page, our query regarding who should play Steve Rogers in "The First Avenger: Captain America" not only received a lot of votes, but it also generated quite a bit of discussion. We posted our thoughts on who's best suited to fill the role, so now it's time to reveal who you chose to play Captain America.

In the end, it was a close race between "Torchwood" star John Barrowman and "True Blood" actor Alexander Skarsgard—but Captain Jack Harkness prevailed, and Barrowman landed at the top of the tally with 36 percent of the total votes. Here's how the rest of the poll panned out, and a sampling of readers' explanations »

Gibson Battled Cancer In Secret

25 September 2009 9:07 AM, PDT | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Late comedian Henry Gibson kept his cancer battle a secret from his friends and co-stars on Rowan & Martin's Laugh-in - failing to mention his illness even when they planned a reunion of the 1960s comedy sketch show.

The beloved actor passed away at his home in Malibu, California on 14 September.

The tragic news came as a surprise to his pals on the TV show because he never complained about his disease to any of them - and even planned to take part in a screen reunion scheduled for later this year.

Gary Owens, who hosted the comedy programme, tells the National Enquirer, "He didn't complain or tell any of us.

"He was a dear friend, a great and wonderful man. I knew him even before Laugh-In. He was busy and active to the end. He'd been doing Boston Legal and was still making commercials."

Owens last saw his friend in July when they discussed a Laugh-In get together: "He looked fine. He never complained. He was joking all the time. We were all looking forward to the reunion show. And he and I were laughing about some of the jokes and skits we planned to do.

"He was so excited about being back together with the old gang. He kept his illness a secret from all of us. But that was Henry - a trouper to the end." »

Watching the Emmys

21 September 2009 1:00 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

So another year has passed and its time for another round of awards for the people who make the television shows we like to watch.

Television is interesting these days. Never before have we seen such great, creative output. Never before have we been subjected to such drivel. It all gets paraded before us tonight, as we watch the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards (handed out, it should be noted, by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences) on CBS, CTV in Canada.

8:00

Interesting that the Emmys chose to introduce the 2009 edition of the Primetime awards by harkening back to the early days of television. Especially as the business of television has never been closer to a complete collapse. Oh, announcer who is trying so hard to sound like a TV host from the '50s. You don't sound at all like you're a three pack-a-day smoker.

Mad Men and 30 Rock Win Emmys Again for Best Drama and Best Comedy So No One Will Be Upset

20 September 2009 8:34 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Imagine if the same six or seven movies and their actors, writers, directors, etc. kept getting nominated for Oscars every year.  There would be slight deviations but for the most part, Academy members would just take their ballot from last year, peruse a couple of For Your Consideration ads, maybe read a critic’s list or two as a second source to make sure they weren’t making any selection deemed interesting, and you’d wonder if they just showed a repeat except they somehow replaced Jon Stewart with Hugh Jackman.

“TV’s Finest Night” is always a repeat and you cherish just about anyone who hasn’t won an Emmy in the past no matter the quality of the show.  Yes, “Mad Men” and “30 Rock” are excellent shows but barring a steep decline in quality, I already know who’s going to win next year because the Emmys are »
