Updated: Reviews for Eastwood's 'Invictus' Begin to Tumble In

13 hours ago | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Updated: Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere has posted his review as well. His thoughts are listed at the bottom of this post.

I will be seeing Clint Eastwood's Invictus on December 7, but it has already started screening in New York and Los Angeles and while many critics are being told to hold their tongue a few have been allowed to let the cat out of the bag.

The film is described as the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) joined forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team (Damon) to help unite their country. Newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially and economically divided in the wake of apartheid. Believing he can bring his people together through the universal language of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa's underdog rugby team as they make an unlikely run to the 1995 World Cup Championship match.

DreamWorks Puts 'Real Steel' In Their Ring

24 November 2009 6:03 AM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

If you held out faint hope that Hugh Jackman wouldn't be helping Shawn Levy box robots, and would abandon it for a feature film adaptation of A Steady Rain, kiss it goodbye now. Variety reports that DreamWorks' Steven Spielberg and Stacey Snider have green-lit Real Steel, making it the studio's first big financial project since it split with Paramount, and had to find its own money.

Spielberg was attached to the project as executive producer when it was first announced, and it seems that it's been a real passion project for him. DreamWorks bought the project back in 2005, and it was one of the films they held onto after splitting from Paramount. "When we took it with us, we really highlighted it as something we would put the pedal to metal on," said DreamWorks co-president of production Mark Sourian. "It's a project that Steven always wanted to do. It just »

Hilary Swank's vital work-outs

6 November 2009 10:01 PM, PST | Monsters and Critics | See recent Monsters and Critics news »

Hilary Swank exercises to see how far she can push her body. The 'Million Dollar Baby' star always makes time for her work-outs because she considers it as essential as eating or breathing. She said: "I love getting the opportunity to recognise what your body's capable of. Being an athlete is something I enjoy. I don't even think of not exercising. It's like the air you breathe and the food and water you need." The 35-year-old beauty says she was inspired to work out more after becoming mesmerised by the muscular form of African tribe members. She explained: "You see these incredible bodies in Africa that are all muscle. They're running to hunt in these tribes. And you think, »

Swank: 'I'll Always Be Friends With Lowe'

6 November 2009 8:11 AM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Hilary Swank is not bitter over her divorce from Chad Lowe - she insists they will remain best friends forever.

The Oscar-winning actress and Lowe met in 1992 on the set of Quiet Days in Hollywood, and wed in a lavish ceremony in 1997.

They announced their split in 2006 and the former couple has since moved on - Lowe welcomed his first daughter with girlfriend Kim Painter in May, while Swank is now dating her agent, John Campisi.

But the Million Dollar Baby star still cherishes the time she spent with her ex-husband.

She says, "It's really such a part of the past, it's over now, so there's no sense in diving back into that. He'll always be one of my best friends. You know, you can't spend 14 years with someone and not carry them in your heart forever." »

Standing Eight Count

2 November 2009 4:38 AM, PST | t5m.com | See recent t5m.com news »

Yesterday I sat down once again to watch Martin Scorsese’s 1980 masterpiece Raging Bull, taking my viewings somewhere into double figures. I consider it to be the director’s finest film (just edging out Mean Streets), and De Niro’s titular Bull, Jake Lamotta, the actor’s premier performance. It is a film that exercises an extraordinary hold, drawing me in time and again in search of new meaning. And it never fails to deliver. But as the credits role I always ask myself the same question: “Why does the film industry have such an abiding love affair with the sweet science?” Like a punch-drunk journeyman surviving on a mix of experience, gut instinct and crude reflex, the fight film, despite its often indelicate and rough-edged familiarity, continues to bewitch filmmakers and confound audiences with an Ali-esque dexterity. 'Amelia,' Hilary Swank: Finding a movie role to fit the face

30 October 2009 3:38 PM, PDT | EW.com - The Movie Critics | See recent EW.com - The Movie Critics news »

Hilary Swank plays the legendary aviator Amelia Earhart in Amelia. And although, as I said in my review, the movie is earthbound, the choice of Swank in the title role demonstrates sky-clear thinking. (Okay, that's enough of the windblown aeronautical metaphors.) Physically, the two are twins, and not just because Swank has been coiffed in Earhart's striking, trademark, short-haired tousle, a variation on Winnie the Pooh's Christopher Robin. Rather, both women project a seductive androgyny-a boyishness that nevertheless leaves no doubt about the sexuality of the woman wearing the trousers. True, Swank first found fame as a girl living as »

Top 7 Films Directed by Actors Turned Directors

30 October 2009 4:34 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.

The old joke is that all actors want to direct.  Though it’s maybe not true of all, I still had plenty to choose from in making this list.  The directors on this list all started life as actors, some still are, but I’d argue that they’re better known as directors.  This month, two well known actresses have tried their hand at direction, Drew Barrymore with Whip It (which was a great movie, I have no idea why it did so badly) and Natalie Portman doing a segment of New York I Love You.  Who knows, maybe one (or both) has a second career around the corner.

7. A Woman Under the Influence (1974)

Directed by John Cassavetes

Recap: A portrait of family in crisis when a woman (Gena Rowlands) goes mad and her husband (Peter Falk) tries to understand it.

“Invictus” Trailer

Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for “Invictus,” starring Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela and Matt Damon as Springboks captain Francois Pienaar.

Morgan Freeman as Nelson Mandela, Invictus

The film tells the inspiring true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team to help unite their country. Official Invictus Trailer

28 October 2009 12:30 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

If I were to judge by the trailer, then surely Invictus looks “just” like another inspirational movie, in the same vein as any other Disney sports production – it paves forward the basic plot but doesn’t do anything real surprising or galvanizing. However, I do know better because I know that Clint Eastwood is directing. Last time he went the sports route, he gave us Million Dollar Baby, which veered away from so many sports cliches toward the end that it felt like a transformation into a completely different, triumphant film. Perhaps Invictus won’t be quite so bold, since it is based on history, but none of his films so far have gone for the obvious conflict and the easy resolve. His films always take a much tougher path and end with more questions than they began and ambiguous feelings on the audience’s part toward the picture. I »

Oscar Winning Screenwriter Paul Haggis Quits Scientology In Public Dispute

27 October 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | Cinemaretro.com | See recent CinemaRetro news »

Paul Haggis, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of such films as Crash, Flags of Our Fathers, and Million Dollar Baby has committed the ultimate no-no: he's split with the Church of Scientology and the story has gone viral. Scientology is considered a legitimate religion by some and a bizarre cult by others and the organization does not like or tolerate bad publicity. Just last week, Church spokesman Tommy Davis walked out on a Nightline interview rather than comment on questions pertaining to the church's top-secret beliefs that earth was founded by a race of ancient aliens. (Click here to view) In another development, senior church officials in France were convicted of committing organized fraud against members and fined $600,000. Haggis and his wife were die-hard Scientologists until Haggis saw Davis laughinghingly dismiss a church edict known as disconnecting which prohibits church members from ever talking to or associating with those that are considered enemies of Scientology. »

Scientologists scrap openly in Hollywood

27 October 2009 | Cineman.ch/en | See recent Cineman.ch/en news »

Uproar in Hollywood: Oscar-winning director Paul Haggis has resigned from the Church of Scientology and his letter to top dog Tommy Davis has been leaked on the net. It was leaked this weekend that Paul Haggis, known mainly for his screenplays ("Million Dollar Baby", "Letters from Iwo Jima" and the last two James Bond movies) as well as for directing his own films ("In the Garden of Elah" and the multiple Oscar winner "Crash"), resigned from the Church of Scientology (best known for faithful supporter Tom Cruise) this past August. In a letter to the church's spokesman, Haggis gave two reasons for leaving the sect created by L. Ron Hubbard: one is the Church of Scientology's support of Proposition 8, a piece of legislation banning gay marriage in California. "The church's refusal to denounce the action of these bigots, hypocrites and homophobes is cowardly,' Haggis wrote. His second reason was more personal: his wife, »

Interview: Hilary Swank And Mira Nair On Female Power And Amelia

26 October 2009 9:58 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Historical figures like Amelia Earhart are hard to come by-- a woman who bucked the trends of her time by wearing pants and refusing to marry until her 30s, who wasn't just a pioneer in the field of aviation, but was committed to helping other women follow in her footsteps. Then again, directors like Mira Nair and actresses like Hilary Swank are hard to come by too. Nair is one of few female directors working consistently with big budgets and stars, while Swank has made her career playing tough women like Million Dollar Baby's Maggie Fitzgerald, or tackling tricky roles like Brandon Teena in Boys Don't Cry. Suffice it to say that the pair were as excited as can be to tackle the iconoclastic Earhart, delving deep into her history and her psyche to present a portrait of the woman from the inside, not as a cultural figure but »
