Sean Penn takes the role of Willie Stark, an idealistic Louisiana politician turned populist demagogue as he becomes corrupted by power, in the second screen adaptation of Robert Penn Warren's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, inspired by the career of real-life Louisiana governor Huey P. Long. Jude Law plays the disillusioned newspaperman who goes to work for Stark, Kate Winslet the secret mistress who also has ties to the reporter, Anthony Hopkin as a powerful judge and political power player, and James Gandolfini, Mark Ruffalo, Patricia Clarkson, Kathy Baker, and Jackie Earle Haley co-star. Steve Zaillian scripts and directs and real life political advisor James Carville is a producer.
