Vera Farmiga: The Hollywood Interview 2009

(Vera Farmiga, right, and George Clooney in Up In The Air.)
by Terry Keefe
(Currently appearing in this month's Venice Magazine.)
The first time we interviewed actress Vera Farmiga was in early 2001, at Swingers Diner on Beverly, over French fries. It was around 8 in the evening, as she had to spend the day auditioning for a network pilot. She was promoting a supporting role in a relatively forgettable Robert De Niro-Ed Burns cop thriller called Fifteen Minutes, where she played a Eastern European hairdresser who witnesses a murder. Parking was scarce in the neighborhood, to the point that we first met that night while angling for the same spot. Today, things have changed somewhat. We’re meeting at a ridiculously large and posh board room at the Beverly Hilton, which reminds of the one in Network where uber-exec Ned Beatty chews out Peter Finch’s Howard Beale. Valets take care of the cars.

Exclusive: 'The Young Victoria' Crowns Golden Globe Nominee Emily Blunt

Emily Blunt’s performance as the future queen of England in "The Young Victoria" doesn’t even hit theaters until this Friday and she’s already earned a Golden Globe nomination! Sure, we all know her from “The Devil Wears Prada,” but much like the British ruler who reigned from 1837 to 1901, Blunt seems to be quite the over-achiever.
In the above exclusive clip from the movie, her Victoria can be seen proposing marriage to Albert (Rupert Friend), an extremely rare move at the time, and one that was totally in-character for the Queen who ascended to the throne at age eighteen and immediately began re-writing the rules.
“Can you imagine, at 18, having to share a room with your mom?” Blunt said of the coddled queen, whose mother wouldn’t even let her walk down a flight of stairs unless someone held her hand. “I mean, there’s nothing worse. She

Best of the Decade #9: The Departed (2006)

As Sean alluded to in another post, I seem to have had a big impact on this list. After I suggested that this film belonged on the list to the other members of Film Junk, it was thrown into the mix. We voted and presto-change-o it's our number 9 on our Best of the Decade list. Yes, The Departed.
Based on the Hong Kong classic Infernal Affairs, The Departed has a killer concept. Matt Damon plays Colin, a police officer in the state of Massachusetts who is actually a mole for Boston crime boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). As Colin rises through the ranks of the police force, he tips Frank off along the way and keeps his real boss out of the hands of the law. Colin, however, isn't the only rat. The police have their own mole in Frank's crew: Billy, played by director Martin Scorsese's favourite son,

Gibson, DiCaprio Teaming for Viking Drama

Mel Gibson and Leonardo DiCaprio are teaming for an untitled period drama about Viking culture. William Monahan (The Departed) is writing the script and will produce.
If the thought of that trio working together doesn’t excite you, imagine Leo swinging a massive axe while pillaging and wearing a horned helm in an epic Braveheart-style battle. Or, since I don’t have a picture of that, here’s an image of a viking versus a shark to pique your interest.
Variety confirmed the story, but wasn’t able to get further details on where this epic viking tale is headed. They did promise it “will be as unsparing as Gibson’s other period directing efforts.” Might I suggest into the ocean? Because Outlander meets Jaws sounds pretty great right now…
Gibson’s last directorial outing was in 2006 with Apocalypto. He then took a hiatus from Hollywood following a drunken,

I think the following week should be called “7 Days with Producer Dan Lin”. That’s because when I was in London a few days ago, I spoke at length with the Sherlock Holmes producer about not only his latest film, but everything he has in development. Trust me, if you’re interested in anything on Dan Lin’s IMDb page, over the next few days I’ll be able to provide an update. But since it was such a wide ranging interview, I’ve decided to post it over the next week as separate articles almost every night. At least that’s the plan.
So to kick off “7 Days with Producer Dan Lin,” let’s start with the Lego movie and Gangster Squad. The big info is he thinks both of these projects are moving forward very quickly in the development cycle.
Regarding Lego, Lin says they’re “talking to several directors right now.

Matt Damon vs. Leonardo DiCaprio: Whose South African (and Southie) Accent is Better?

From a casting agent’s perspective, Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio are as good as it gets. Not only can they both carry a movie, but they immerse themselves totally in their parts. Both, too, have displayed an impressive range: Damon can play an amnesiac superspy (The Bourne Identity) as convincingly as a slap-happy Siamese twin (Stuck on You), and Leo can embody a mentally retarded teen with the same ease as he can Howard Hughes (The Aviator). Finally, both have shown a willingness to learn accents, which opens up a slew of casting possibilities. The question is, which one has a better knack for it? If said agent were casting the part of a lisping Tasmanian eunuch, for instance, which actor would he rely on to nail the inflections? There are two particularly tricky accents we can compare them on: South African—which Damon uses in Clint Eastwood’s

The 60th Berlin Film Festival has announced the first seven titles for its Golden Bear Competition line-up. As per the film festival’s press release, this initial group is "characterized by up-and-coming young directors, stars and masters of filmmaking like Martin Scorsese and Roman Polanski."
Scorsese’s out-of-competition entry, Shutter Island, stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Emily Mortimer, Jackie Earle Haley, Patricia Clarkson, Max von Sydow, and Elias Koteas. Adapted by Laeta Kalogridis from Dennis Lehane’s novel, the thriller chronicles the pursuit of a murderess who has supposedly fled to Shutter Island after escaping from a mental asylum. Two Golden Globe Nominations For Meryl Streep — What Does It Mean For Her Oscar Chances?

Editor's Note: This was supposed to publish yesterday at noon. Not sure what happened there. Sorry about that, y'all.
The Golden Globe nominations are the talk of Tinsel Town today, but it's not necessarily the awards themselves that people are focused on. Oftentimes, the Globes are an interesting indicator of what we might see at the bigger event — namely, the Academy Awards.
If this year's Globes are any indication, then it's safe to say that Meryl Streep is going to get some loving at next year's Oscars. Streep had two starring roles this year in the forms of "It's Complicated" and "Julie & Julia," both of which are contending for the Best Musical or Comedy category. As a result, the actress's biggest competition this year is herself, believe it or not.
At this year's Globes, Streep will go head-to-head with herself in the Best Actress department for her separate performances as

Mel Gibson has signed on to direct an as-yet-untitled Viking epic, to be scripted by The Departed/Kingdom of Heaven/Body of Lies scribe William Monahan. Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to star. Graham King, producer of Gibson’s upcoming films, Edge of Darkness and The Departed, is financing the film through his production shingle, Gk Films, partnered with Gibson’s own Icon Productions. All that is known about the story of the film is that is is a drama set in the Viking world, and that Leo will most assuredly play a Viking in the piece.
From Graham King’s lips to God’s ears:
“This will be an awe-inspiring story, created with some of the industry’s finest cinematic talent and I am just over the moon to be making this film with Mel, Leo and Bill.”

Ever since it was revealed last week that Mel Gibson will be shooting a new film next year, rumors have been spreading across the Internet as to what the film will actually be about, with many people suggesting that it may possibly be the story of Jesus Arriaga due to a location being revealed as Ignacio Allende prison in Mexico.
Variety have now revealed that Gibson’s film will in fact be an epic Viking period drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The film will be written by Oscar winner William Monahan, who adapted The Departed (starring DiCaprio) and Edge of Darkness (starring Gibson). Gibson will produce alongside Tim Headington (the natural resources billionaire who has recently started producing movies) and Graham King, who has produced numerous films starring DiCaprio over the past decade, as well as Mel Gibson’s upcoming Edge of Darkness.
Obviously the location in Mexico is for an entirely different project,

Leonardo DiCaprio and Mel Gibson Team for Viking Movie

No, Leonardo DiCaprio and Mel Gibson won't be making a movie about the Minnesota Vikings' Cinderella season. Instead, the two Hollywood powerhouses are joining forces for an untitled period film about Viking culture. Yup, those Vikings.
Variety tells us that Mel Gibson will direct the movie and Leonardo DiCaprio will star. As of right now, the plan is to push the film into production next fall. With DiCaprio in the lead role, this will be the first Gibson-directed film to star a big-name actor (aside from the films that starred Gibson himself, like Braveheart and The Man Without a Face). It also comes with a pretty solid team behind the scenes, as William Monahan (The Departed) wrote the script, and Graham King (The Departed) is producing.
Not much at all is being said...

Mel Gibson may have just made his acting comeback with the yet-to-be-released Edge of Darkness and the Jodie Foster-directed comedy, The Beaver, but that hasn’t stopped him from continuing his work as a director. After impressing with The Passion of the Christ and Apocalypto, it looks like Gibson will be working with Leonardo DiCaprio for the first time as he directs an untitled Viking movie.
Variety’s BFDealmemo reports that Gibson will direct and DiCaprio will star in the yet-to-titled movie set in the world of the Viking culture. The movie will be scripted by the award-winning William Monaghan, who penned such films as The Departed and Body of Lies. The Departed producer, Graham King, will produce the Viking movie, along with Gibson himself and Tim Headington in a co-production between King’s Gk Films and Gibson’s Icon Productions.

Leonardo DiCaprio To Wear Viking Horns In Mel Gibson-Directed Drama

Norse history is going to hit in a big way in 2011. First and foremost, there's "Thor," based on the Marvel comic inspired by Norse mythology. And if Wikipedia is correct (unlikely), there's a chance of a long-ago-rumored live-action "Hagar the Horrible" movie set for release that year. Finally, a drama about Vikings from director Mel Gibson and producer Graham King ("The Departed") is set to begin shooting next fall, meaning it will probably be in theaters at some time the following year.
According to Variety, Viking history enthusiast Leonardo DiCaprio will star in the untitled film, which is currently being scripted by William Monahan (both of whom also had a hand in "The Departed"). The plot has not been revealed, but we can presume this will be a bloody action epic, similar to Gibson's "Braveheart." Perhaps there will also be some sort of focus on the Christianization of Scandinavia during the Viking Age,

According to Variety, the movie likely to be Mel Gibson’s next directorial effort will be a viking story, written by William Monahan (The Departed, Kingdom of Heaven), and starring once and future heartthrob Leonardo DiCaprio. It’s really early in the process to be saying this – as Gibson is finishing up The Beaver with Jodie Foster, and DiCaprio just finished principal photography on Christopher Nolan’s Inception – but I got pretty excited when I read the headline to the story.
Of course, I initially had hoped that maybe Gibson was going to star in the movie as well, but he’s done well enough with the period movies where he was just behind the camera (Apocalypto). Monahan, has been on a steady role since breaking in, with KoH being his first credited feature writing gig. He also scripted the soon to be released Martin Campbell, Mel Gibson starring movie Edge of Darkness.

I know I know, this is a last second screening but here it is none the less. From Academy Award winners Graham King and Martin Scorsese, along with the makers of Gosford Park and The Departed, comes The Young Victoria, the story of Queen Victoria’s early rise to power.
On the eve of her 18th Birthday and succession to the English throne, young Princess Victoria (Emily Blunt) is caught in a royal power struggle. But it is her blossoming love affair with Albert (Rupert Friend) that will determine the strength of her reign.

Now on to the part that you all have been waiting for: how do I win? That is the easy part. The first 30 people to sign up below wins an admit “two” pass – good for two to the above screening. Again, if you want to bring a date you still only need to enter once!

Call him crazy if you want (no, please, don’t), but Mel Gibson loves him some grungy period storytelling. His latest, which he will also direct, will be set during the time of the Vikings, and he’s already landed his star in Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie doesn’t currently have a title or even a concrete plot, except that it will be a “period drama set in the world of Viking culture”. William Monahan, who wrote “The Departed” and the Gibson cop movie “Edge of Darkness”, will pen the flick, while Graham King, who produced both “Departed” and “Darkness”, will be doing producing duties on this one as well.

Hwaet! Praise of the prowess of handsome film kings / of sharp-eyed actor-directors in days now passing / we have heard, and what amazement the readers have!
Or in other words, Mel Gibson is stepping behind the camera again. According to Variety, he will be directing Leonardo DiCaprio in an untitled Viking drama that will be penned by William Monahan, and produced by Graham King. It'll be a reunion rarely seen outside a mead hall, as Monahan and King penned and produced Edge of Darkness and The Departed. They'll all be sailing pretty far off the shores of Boston for this one, and are expected to make the journey in fall 2010.
All involved have only confirmed the project, but aren't releasing any plot details except that DiCaprio will apparently be playing a Viking. Variety says he's always been interested in the frozen north, and jumped at the chance to explore the topic with Gibson.
