  • In real life, Sean Bean, who plays Captain Rich, is terrified of flying and will do it only when absolutely necessary.

  • Peter Sarsgaard also admits to having a lifelong fear of flying.

  • Jodie Foster's role was originally written for Sean Penn. The original character's name of "Kyle" was even kept. Coincedently, Penn's role in The Game (1997) was originally intended for Jodie Foster.

  • The 35mm prints of this film come from a digital intermediate that has been digitally grain reduced. As a result there are digital grain reduction artifacts visible on all prints.

  • The cartoon that is played on the monitor when Kyle wakes up is "Kenny the Shark" (2003).

  • Portia de Rossi and Christina Ricci were each offered the role of Kyle Pratt, but both turned it down. Josie Davis reportedly turned down the role of Kyle.

  • Although the AALTO Air E-474 featured in this movie is a fictional aircraft, it does bear a strong resemblance in overall design to the real-life double-decker Airbus A-380, and its cockpit is very similar to the cockpit of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

  • The Association of Professonal Flight Attendants called for an official boycott of the film because they thought it depicted flight attendants as rude, uncaring, indifferent, and even one as a terrorist.

  • The Berlin airport scenes were actually shot in Leipzig, Germany.

Trivia items below here contain information that may give away important plot points. You may not want to read any further if you've not already seen this title.

  • SPOILER: Jodie Foster knows her daughter is still on the plane when she sees the image her daughter drew in the frost on the plane's glass window. This was lifted directly from the 'Alfred Hitchcock' film The Lady Vanishes (1938). It features the same premise (a woman vanishes from a moving vehicle) and the same clue (an image drawn by the "missing person" on the glass).
