Movie Poster Round-Up: Alice in Wonderland, Nine, The Book of Eli, Eli Roth’s Cotton and More!

25 November 2009 2:15 PM, PST | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

We've got another avalanche of posters to throw your way this week, collecting a decent cross-section of posters that have been recently released online for upcoming films. First up are three gorgeous one sheets for Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, and I have to say, I am loving the look of this flick. Also hot off the presses are three posters for Rob Marshall's musical and Oscar hopeful Nine that seem to play up the sex appeal (and is it just me or does Daniel Day Lewis look a little like Nicolas Cage here?). Others that are worth a look include new art for District 13: Ultimatum, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Kick-Ass, and Eli Roth's upcoming faux-exorcism documentary Cotton. What's up with that poster for The Road with the massive Rolling Stone quote on it? Who's advertising for who? Check out the rest of the »

District 13: Ultimatum Official Poster!

23 November 2009 11:39 PM, PST | Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news »

We have the official poster for Magnet Releasing's intense action follow-up "District 13: Ultimatum," also known as "B13-u" or by its French title "Banlieue 13 c- Ultimatum." Patrick Alessandrin ("August 15th," "Mean Spirit") directs from the screenplay by Luc Besson. Two years have passed since elite police officer Damien Tomasso (Cyril Raffaelli) teamed up with reformed vigilante Leito (parkour originator David Belle) to save the notorious District 13, a racially charged ghetto populated by violent drug dealing gangs and vicious killers. Despite government promises to maintain order, the state of the district has deteriorated, and a group of corrupt cops and elected officials are conspiring to cause civil unrest in D13, looking for an excuse to raze the area and cash in on its redevelopment. Now Damian and Leito must join forces again, and use their mastery of martial arts and their unique physical skills to bring peace to »

New Posters for A Single Man, The Road and District 13: Ultimatum

23 November 2009 8:21 PM, PST | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

The Weinstein Company has released a new poster for The Road and A Single Man.  While I liked the previous poster for The Road, I understand using a huge quote saying how great the movie is as a way to help sell the movie.

However, the new poster for A Single Man is just perfect.  Just like the movie, the poster is elegant, and it sells the relationships of the film.  Colin Firth is looking at whatever is holding his interest (most likely Matthew Goode) and Julianne Moore is looking at what she wants most, but can’t have.  While I haven’t yet raved about A Single Man on Collider, the film is an amazing first feature from director Tom Ford and I’ll have more in the coming weeks.

Finally, Magnet has released the first poster for District 13: Ultimatum.  This is the sequel to the Luc Besson »

Poster For District 13: Ultimatum

23 November 2009 1:56 PM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

I've never been able to rave enough about District B13, the French action film that introduced the world to Taken director Pierre Morel and used parkour better than pretty much any other movie has since. It's not really the kind of movie that begs for a sequel, being that it's a short and sweet 80 minutes long and ties everything up at the end. But now that a sequel exists, I'm not going to complain. District 13: Ultimatum has Cyril Raffaelli and David Belle returning in the lead roles as the reformed gangster and the cop trying to keep the peace in the notorious B13, where gangs still rule and, once again, there's a threat of the government simply wiping the whole place off the map. It's not directed by Morel, which is a disappointment, and let's face it, it's not likely they'll once again capture the same level of schlock magic. »

Poster Lays Down a District 13: Ultimatum

23 November 2009 12:09 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

If you love martial arts action and the high-flying first film from producer Luc Besson, you must see this movie. That is my ultimatum to you, friends. Besson is back, producing District 13: Ultimatum with Patrick Alessandrin directing. Cyril Raffaelli and David Belle reprise their roles as Damien and Leito, two earnest dudes who use Parkour and ass-kicking to once again save the futuristic Parisian ghetto from being wiped off the map. Those French, they are always trying to hold the gangster down. Magnet Releasing has provided us with a copy of the poster (click to enlarge below) for Ultimatum, a film I reviewed favorably at Fantastic Fest earlier this year. Like its predecessor, Ultimatum kicks its audience square in the chest with high-flying action and a relentless pace. It is derivative of the first film, but by the second act we don't care. We just want to see more martial artistry and mayhem. District 13 »

Taken Director Pierre Morel Signs on for Paranoia Thriller, Signals

4 November 2009 11:27 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

I've been a fan of Pierre Morrel ever since his French parkour action film District B13 floored me back in 2005. The film was certainly imperfect, but looking at it purely as an action film you could tell that Morrel was someone to watch out for in the future. Several years later, he reminded us that Liam Neeson can still kick ass in Taken, and he's currently putting the finishing touches on his latest, From Paris with Love. We've also previously reported on two other projects he's working on.  Now he's signed on for another feature, a paranoia thriller entitled Signals. The storyline is apparently a secret, but it's expected to take on the tone of conspiracy thrillers like Three Days of the Condor. I'll be honest and say that I don't even care what this film is about, I'm going to see it simply because of Morel's involvement. I'm hoping »

Taken director's next

4 November 2009 3:46 PM, PST | JoBlo.com | See recent JoBlo news »

Is French filmmaker Pierre Morel on his way to becoming one of my favorite action directors? He certainly seems to be barreling down that path. The Besson protege followed his fun futuristic parkour/martial arts flick Banlieue 13 (District 13) with the pure vengeance of Liam Neeson in Taken, and he has the Travolta spy movie From Paris With Love (which looks like a literal blast) awaiting release. Up next (potentially) is an original project called Signals, which is only described as a... »

Drag Me To Hell

Finally Sam Raimi gets back to what he does best. A damn good splatter-fest that is as funny as it is scary. Alison Lohman turns in a brilliant performance as Christine Brown, a normal young woman who works at an L.A. loan company. After she refuses the mysterious Mrs Ganush an extension on her loan to impress her boss she finds herself on the receiving end of a very nasty curse that transforms her life quite literally into a living hell. Asking for help from a psychic to reverse the curse Christine finds herself in a race against time and in the end she has to choose exactly how far she is prepared to go in order to break the spell.

This is fantastic filmmaking. It moves at a break-neck speed and offers moments that will make you jump miles off of your seat. Forget Spider-Man 4, »

Intense teaser for scifi actioner "D4" makes us want more now!

21 October 2009 2:50 PM, PDT | QuietEarth.us | See recent QuietEarth news »

Now this is how you tease viewers. Dump them into a particularly tense segment of your film - preferably one that takes place at the apex of a crucial action - and then yank them out as quickly as you brought them in.

That's what first time director Darrin Dickerson does in this first teaser for his mercenary scifi actioner, D4, and it works to make me want to see more. It's mid-budget project, but the acting, photography and sound all look pretty damn good. No this isn't a prequel to District 9 or is it a spin off of District 13. Also, I'm getting a real cool Doom vibe that I hope the film lives up to.

Synopsis:

A team of ex-military mercenaries is hired by a wealthy doctor to rescue her kidnapped child from a supposedly abandoned government facility. Once inside, they discover they're not alone, and what »

Prince of Persia, Minus All the Jake

14 October 2009 12:55 PM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

Put your pants back on ladies. You'll find no new images or footage of a glistening, muscled out Jake Gyllenhaal here. What you will find though is Jordan Mechner's machinima trailer used to pitch Prince of Persia to the movie studios. So depending on how you get your jollies, you may want to take your pants back off. The trailer manages to capture many elements that make the more recent iterations of the game so popular, but doesn't give much of an idea of what we can expect out of the movie other than Jake and Gemma Arterton getting wet and slimy. We can be mostly guaranteed to see some District B13-style parkour as leaving that aspect of the game out would be committing nerd seppuku, but if you watch this trailer you'll see saw blades grinding out of the walls, spinning barbed pillars, and pits of spikes »

Fantastic Fest Review: District 13: Ultimatum

10 October 2009 5:02 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

When it reached American audiences two years after it opened in France, 2006's District 13 (or B13 here) served as a breezy introduction to the art of parkour, not to mention director Pierre Morel's knack for shooting action sequences both energetically and visibly (an underrated quality, that last one). Morel moved on to Taken, though, while parkour began to infiltrate more high-profile Hollywood fare, like Casino Royale and Live Free or Die Hard.

However, writer/producer/all-around action maven Luc Besson stuck around to cash in on the promise of a follow-up, and now we're greeted with District 13: Ultimatum, a competent if flabby rehash of the first film's race-against-time plot and dystopian setting.

John Woo Update: A Remake of ‘Le Samourai?’

8 October 2009 2:04 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Since 2003’s much-panned Paycheck, American audiences haven’t heard much from the often-imitated action auteur, John Woo.  But he hasn’t been resting on his laurels.  In fact, he’s been adding feathers to his cap.  His latest film, Red Cliff, is an over four-hour-long historical epic that broke the record for the highest-grossing film in China (a title once held by Titanic).

However, Red Cliff, like Woo’s next project, Jianyu Jianghu (The Swordsman’s World), is in Chinese.  And we all know that subtitles - especially on an action film that won’t play with the art-house types -  dooms a film to limited release in America.  So when Will the director return to American screens with an English language film?

IMDb lists a slew of projects in development, but the two Woo is most excited about haven’t been announced till now.  One is a remake of »

Fantastic Fest Review: District 13: Ultimatum

8 October 2009 9:37 AM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Speed, agility, violence: Parkour, it's not just something that gets parodied on The Office, it's the way of the French. Rather, it is the way of building jumper turned action star David Belle and French martial artist Cyril Raffaelli, both of whom were made famous by their performances in the Luc Besson produced, Pierre Morel directed District B13. In 2004, this fast-paced, high-flying actioner took the world of genre cinema by storm, unleashing Parkour upon the world. It has since been seen in other films such as Casino Royale and Live Free or Die Hard. And if you've seen it in any of these movies, you know how impressive this efficient mode of obstacle navigation can be. Then again, if you haven't seen it in District B13 or its subsequent sequel, District 13: Ultimatum, then I would argue that you ain't seen nothin' yet. Flash forward to 2009. Director Pierre Morel has moved on to direct the Liam Neeson »

Badass Trailer & Poster for ‘From Paris with Love’

30 September 2009 10:31 AM, PDT | Movie Cultists | See recent Movie Cultists news »

This trailer flew under my radar when it was released last week, but I'm glad I finally caught it.  From Paris with Love is an action-comedy starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (sporting an American accent) that was co-written by Luc Besson, the godfather of modern European action movies himself.  It's directed by Besson's frequent collaborator Pierre Morel, a longtime cinematographer (Transporter, Unleashed) who directed 2004's parkour flick District 13 and hit pay dirt at the beginning of the year with Taken, the surprise smash starring Liam Neeson and Maggie Grace. Despite the From Russia with Love-reminiscent title, it looks decidedly ... »

The M/C Review: 'D13: Ultimatum'

28 September 2009 9:00 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

I've got a real soft spot for the Luc Besson action movie sausage factory.  They are all generally the same film, narrow variations on formula.  As such, I tend to enjoy these variations, and how much I enjoy them depends largely on who's starring. It's nice then that "District 13: Ultimatum" is a direct sequel to "District 13," because the reason to see this is the chemistry between Cyril Raffaelli and David Belle as a supercop and a street rat, forced once again to team up to save the militarized slum of District 13.  The problem is that the film takes... »

Six Shooter Film Series Aims Great Films at Video-on-Demand

24 September 2009 1:48 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Ever since the days Pay-Per-View, I’ve always thought that art house films should be able to come through a streaming cable-service.  I love art house theatres but they’re so rare and have such a limited number of screens that it can be difficult to get true independent films (not small-budget films from an “indie” division of a major studio) in front of audiences.

But the day of indie films on-demand arrived and we are all the better for it.  Magnolia/Magnet Pictutres has taken great advantage of this recent distribution channel to bring audiences movies that haven’t hit DVD and may not even be in a theatre near you.  The first Six Shooter Film Series brought home audiences films like “Let the Right One In” and “Timecrimes” and this year they’re really bringing the thunder “Ong Bak 2″, Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Bronson”, John Woo’s »
