Jennifer Hudson Playing Mandela's Wife In Biopic

18 November 2009 6:18 AM, PST | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

For her first post-Oscar role, Jennifer Hudson chose a little poorly, playing an underdeveloped saintly assistant character in the Sex and the City movie, and being gifted with a hideous designer bag at the end for all her troubles. Since then she's been doing a little better, taking a decent role in the decent movie The Secret Life of Bees. And now she's going all the way up to the Presidency. Well, sorta. Variety is reporting that Hudson will play Nelson Mandela's wife Winnie in a biopic about the political activist. Winnie is a far more polarizing figure than the widely celebrated Mandela, having been accused of ordering assassinations on political enemies, encouraging violence in the fight to end apartheid, and convicted of fraud in 2003. She stayed married to Mandela throughout his imprisonment on Robben Island, but divorced him soon after he was freed thanks to her own adultery. »

Jennifer Hudson challenges herself to play Winnie Mandela

18 November 2009 1:19 AM, PST | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

Jennifer Hudson's career has been remarkable to behold.  She followed up her "American Idol" debut (and elimination) to win a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in "Dreamgirls" only to release a Grammy-winning album the following year.  And while Hudson has shown her acting chops in "Sex and the City" and "The Secret Life of Bees," she's about to take on her biggest challenge yet as South African lighting rod Winnie Mandela in "Winnie." According to Variety, the independently financed film will focus on the complicated South African who was jailed for fighting in support of her activist (and »

Independence Day 2 is Waiting on Will Smith

15 October 2009 3:59 PM, PDT | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

If you were dying to know why there hasn’t been a sequel to Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day, the biggest blockbuster hit of 1996, here’s your answer:

Everyone is waiting on Will Smith.

In 2008, 20th Century Fox CEO Tom Rothman told the IESB.net, “We would love to do it, it’s really a matter of Roland, it’s up to Roland. He knows that we’d love to do it… We would be very excited to do it because I think, yes, that story definitely can and should continue.”

Of course he does.  The movie made $306 million over 13 years ago.  Just for comparison, (without adjusting for inflation) that would make it the #2 movie of 2009 behind Transformers 2.

But is Roland Emmerich really the problem?  I find that hard to believe with his continuous string of destruction movies.  Luckily LatinoReview asked Emmerich about it and he gave the real »

Tyler Perry to write and direct a feature film version of "For Colored Girls"

7 September 2009 2:53 PM, PDT | AfterEllen.com | See recent AfterEllen.com news »

A few months ago I wrote about Jasmine Guy directing a stage version of Ntozake Shange's famous 1976 play For Girls Who Have Committed Suicide When the Rainbow Is Enuf in Atlanta this summer.

Now Lionsgate has announced a feature film version of the play to be adapted, directed and produced by Tyler Perry.

Tyler Perry plans to tell us about black women's experiences

Yes, that Tyler Perry — the man who made $125 million last year by bringing us movies like Madea Goes to Jail, the latest in his popular franchise of wacky-grandma movies he has written, produced, and starred in.

Because there's nothing funnier than movies starring a black man in a dress — especially to all the talented black actresses who can't get good roles if their names aren't Halle Berry, Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, or Beyoncé.

Common added to Just Wright with Queen Latifah

20 June 2009 10:23 AM, PDT | The Scorecard Review | See recent Scorecard Review news »

Common is going to act. It’s finally going to happen. I know what you’re thinking … he was in Terminator Salvation and American Gangster. But he was just hanging out. He wasn’t acting. Those were small, forgettable roles. Here, in Just Wright he’s the male lead. We’re finally going to see what he’s capable of. Here’s the news release.

Fox Searchlight Pictures President of Production Claudia Lewis announced today that principal photography on Just Wright will begin in mid July, in New York. Dakota Fanning & Kristin Stewart To Star In ‘Runaways’

6 March 2009 4:10 PM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Twilight actress Kristen Stewart is set to portray rock star Joan Jett in the up and coming biopic about Jett’s all girl band, The Runaways.  Also set to star is Dakota Fanning who’ll be playing Cherri Currie, lead singer of The Runaways.  The story is about Currie’s time as lead singer with the band, which she joined when she was only 15 and the lifestyle that ensued.

Variety has announced:

At 15, Fanning is the same age Currie was when she made her debut with the Runaways as the lead singer who belted out hard-edged tunes like “Cherry Bomb.” Currie became caught up in drugs and a hard-partying lifestyle.

It’ll be interesting to watch Fanning take on this role as this is her initial foray into a more adult role.  She’s recently done The Secret Life Of Bees and Push, but nothing remotely as adult in nature »

The Secret Life Of Bees DVD Review -- Jeff says if only Secret Life of Bees was more of a feature-length drama and less of a Lifetime feature of the week

The Secret Life of Bees (20th Century Fox)Director: Gina Prince-BythewoodStarring: Dakota Fanning, Jennifer Hudson, Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys, Sophie Okonedo, Paul Bettany, Tristan Wilds As former celebrities from Michael Lookinland to Frankie Muniz could tell you, making the leap from child actor to adult thespian is a tricky feat; no matter how much the public likes you when you’re eight, transitioning into adult scripts is about as likely as a soap star landing the starring role in an Academy Award-winning film – it can happen, and there’s really no reason why it shouldn’t, but betting on it is probably not a very smart idea. Still, if you were going to put money on one of the current crop of child actors having a lifelong career, Dakota Fanning wouldn’t be a bad name to pick – not only because of her talent, which is formidable, but »

DVD: Natalie Wood 6 Times!, Nick & Norah

3 February 2009 1:10 PM, PST | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

Collections ~ It's Tuesday so there are new box sets available highlighting everything from tired hockey masked killers (you know who) to highly respected thespians (Peter Sellers and Alec Guiness) but the big ... make that B-i-g... deal for The Film Experience is the "Natalie Wood Collection" which includes six films. I haven't seen Bombers B-52 or Cash McCall but even if they're bad you still get to stare at her for two hours. Her beauty justifies most any running time.

Natalie Wood *swoon*

The other four are more notable players in her filmography. There's the Edith Head costumed Helen Gurley Brown comedy Sex and the Single Girl (1964) and two true classics: the musical Gypsy (1962) and the legendary 'Warren Beatty Destroys Lives!' teen angst of the unbeatable Splendor in the Grass (1961). Adventurous movie fanatics might be most interested in getting a good long look at the underseen and idiosyncratic inside »

Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 2/3

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Kevin Smith has finally broken out of the Jay and Silent Bob circle and made a romantic comedy that didn't crumble like Jersey Girl. It's cuter than Clerks 2, but thrives on brief, scene-stealing moments from high-school reunion cameos and Jason Mewes. Rent it on DVD or Blu-ray.

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

Most of our beloved teen fare comes when music is mixed with turmoil-filled romance and adventure, and Infinite Playlist is no exception. In fact, it hits a lot of different themes all in one -- the gross-out factor from flicks like American Pie, the quirky music loving of Empire Records, ex meddling like Some Kind of Wonderful, and a rather refreshing attitude towards sexuality. Buy it on DVD or Blu-ray.

Fanning Halted Final Exams To Watch Obama Day

28 January 2009 11:35 PM, PST | WENN | See recent WENN news »

Barack Obama's inauguration will always hold very special memories for actress Dakota Fanning - it was exam day for her. The teenager feared she'd miss the swearing in of the new President - because she was too busy sitting her final exams, but it became a day of hard work and celebration for the actress and her school pals.

She tells WENN, "Our school put the coverage on in the theatre for us, so we could watch it all in there. I was so happy."

And the big day wasn't lost on Fanning - she realised what a special moment it was while she was shooting and promoting period piece The Secret Life of Bees last year.

She adds, "We were dealing with so many civil rights in that movie. One of the key points of that movie is when Jennifer Hudson's character gets beat up for wanting to register to vote, and now we have an African-American president.

"I'm so happy that I get to live in a world where that can happen. I grew up where interracial relationships are normal to me. I see that all the time in school and just walking down the street and I don't think twice about it, so when I see someone like Barack Obama run, I don't see him as a black man or a white man; I just see him as a man. We're all just human beings.

"Anyone that is willing to be the President of our country, who will lead us and protect us is a very inspirational human being, especially him... I just love to listen to him." »
