Greg McLean’s grisly and gruesome Australian horror is ostensibly based on true, but the sadistic tale of an Outback loner gone psychotic killer (disturbingly played by a creepy John Jarratt) is more like the Aussie answer to the gritty seventies American horror cinema. Greg McLean directs their torments and escape attempts with a bone-crunching, bullet-splattering, flesh-flaying naturalism that is almost admirable in its simple effectiveness. Almost. The unrated DVD edition runs 5 minutes longer than the R-rated cut.
