Twenty one years ago Robert Zemeckis did the impossible. He created a world where all cartoon characters lived together regardless of which studios they ‘worked’ for, and set the riotous chaos of ToonTown alongside the human Hollywood and in treating these characters as actors in their own cartoon films and having them interact seamlessly with the live action smashed the fourth wall with a charm and expertise that should have heralded a new phase in animation features.
It was a truly wonderful film, with Bob Hoskins as Eddie Valiant and Christopher Lloyd as the epically spooky Judge Doom acting up a storm with their cartoon compatriots the arrogant Baby Herman, Benny the fearless cab and, of course, ToonTown’s own odd couple, Jessica and Roger Rabbit.
The writing was witty and self referential without ever becoming parodic, the Toons themselves were so well rounded they fitted in perfectly with the established characters, »

Looking lean 'n mean at this year's American Film Market (kicking off officially next week) is the UK horror film Dead Cert . In the tradition of Innocent Blood , the film fuses the gangster and vampire genre under the direction of Steve Lawson. The plot crunch goes like this: A gang of tough London gangsters get more than they bargained for when a group of businessmen make an offer to buy their club, the Inferno. They turn out to be nothing less than Vampires wanting their land back and turn viciously on the gangsters when their demands are not met. Leading the cast is Janet Montgomery who hit us with a one-two punch this fall in The Hills Run Red and Wrong Turn 3: Left for Dead . Dexter Fletcher ( Doom ) also stars alongside Craig Fairbass ( White Noise 2 ) and Billy... »

Actress Rosamund Pike threw herself into her role as a doctor in 2005 movie Doom - she dissected a corpse in preparation.
The Brit starred in the horror film and was determined to emulate a true medic, but admits the experience left her feeling queasy.
She says, "When researching for Doom, I spent a few days at a morgue in Prague. On the third day I was presented with my own cadaver and had to open it up.
"I had the world's worst hangover and the doctor who was assisting me was called away, so I was left alone with this male corpse on a slab." »

Dwayne Johnson's movie career has taken an odd and relatively shameless turn over the past few years. Like most wrestlers, he started out in Hollywood as an up and coming action star doing movies like The Scorpion King, The Rundown, and Walking Tall. After Doom and Southland Tales, however, he settled into more family-friendly territory and has never looked back. Now the trailer for his latest film Tooth Fairy has arrived online, and well... let's just say it's about as family-friendly as it gets. The Rock is Derek Thompson, a scrappy minor-league hockey player who hits so hard that he has earned the nickname "The Tooth Fairy" from opposing players. His bad attitude eventually lands him in hot water, however, and he is granted magical powers and forced to serve as a real honest-to-goodness Tooth Fairy. Hilarious! Would you expect anything more from the director of The Santa Clause 2? »

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Karl Urban has taken the lead villain’s role in Priest, Screen Gems’ film version of the TokyoPop manga. He’ll take on the vampire-battling priest played by Paul Bettany, a sheriff portrayed by Twilight’s Cam Gigandet and Maggie Q’s warrior priestess in the postapocalyptic scenario.
To be directed by Scott Stewart (who also helmed Screen Gems’ upcoming Legion) from a script by Cory Goodman, Priest casts Urban as Black Hat, himself a former priest/bloodsucker slayer who has been turned, and now considers himself a vampire god. The New Zealand-born actor, recently seen as Dr. McCoy in Star Trek, has a long genre résumé that includes The Irrefutable Truth About Demons, Ghost Ship, The Chronicles Of Riddick, Doom and the second and third Lord Of The Rings features; he recently wrapped the remake of And Soon The Darkness. Priest rolls next week in Los Angeles, »

I am trying to remember the first time that I saw a Quentin Tarantino movie. It was his debut Reservoir Dogs, and I first saw it at a late night screening session at my local multiplex in either 1993 or 1994. The movie had been denied a video release in the UK, so film chains like Odeon and I think Virgin Cinemas at the time, took it upon themselves to show the film late at night to a nation of filmgoers who literally couldn't get enough of this exciting new filmmaker. Then, just a couple of months later Pulp Fiction arrived on the scene, and that movie changed everything. The film won the Palme D'or, and the following year garnered a few Oscar nominations to boot. I fell in love with the film, and could not wait to get back to the cinema to see it again the following weekend.

I only have one more piece of coding detail left to do and the RopeofSilicon 2010 "The Contenders" section will open up and two of the titles featured in that section have just enjoyed a couple of online updates. First off we have the poster for An Education as well as a clip featuring the much talked about performance of Carey Mulligan as Jenny, a teenage girl living in Britain in the early 1960s on the cusp of the strait-laced, post-war period and the free-spirited decade to come. Along with Mulligan the film stars Peter Sarsgaard, Alfred Molina, Emma Thompson, Dominic Cooper and Rosamund Pike. Based on buzz it would seem Mulligan is a definite contender for a Best Actress nomination and others whom have seen the film are applauding the work of Molina and most recently In Contention mentioned Pike's performance. One thing is for certain, it's nice to see »

At a time when an increasing number of music-video directors are taking the leap into features, one who seems to be choosing his projects especially carefully is Jonas Akerlund. Having helmed creative, often harsh and noteworthy clips for the likes of Metallica and Prodigy, Akerlund was a force to be reckoned with on that scene before making a reasonable amount of noise with his highly stylized debut feature, 2003’s Spun. It has been six years since then, but now his follow-up film, the serial-killer thriller Horsemen, is hitting DVD from Lionsgate following very brief theatrical play earlier this year.
In Horsemen, it is said that the word “apocalypse” truly means “unveiling,” and the film plays as a revelation of Akerlund’s more restrained yet still dark tendencies as a filmmaker. As he tells Fango, that was a conscious effort. “Horsemen has a different tempo than most of my previous work, »

A big screen adaptation of the classic 80s arcade game Asteroids is in the works. According to the trades, Universal has won a four-studio bidding war to pick up the film rights to the Atari video game with Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) on board to produce. In Asteroids, initially released as an arcade game in 1979, a player controlled a triangular space ship in an asteroid field. The object was to shoot and destroy the hulking masses of rock and the occasional flying saucer while avoiding smashing into both. As opposed to today's games, there is no story line or fancy world-building mythology, so the studio would be creating a plot from scratch. Universal, however, is used to that development process, as it's in the middle of doing just that for several of the Hasbro board game properties it is translating to the big screen, such as Battleship and Candyland. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount has acquired the supernatural action screenplay Hellified in a six-figure deal. Andy Burg wrote the script, and the movie is set to be produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, whose horror credits include Constantine, Doom, 1408 and the upcoming Dogs from Martyrs writer/director Pascal Laugier.
Details of Hellified’s story aren’t being revealed at the moment, but it reportedly concerns, no surprise, a trip to the hot place. Set to direct the movie is Dan Bradley (pictured), who has handled 2nd-unit and stunt coordination duties on Freddy’S Dead: The Final Nightmare, The Lawnmower Man, The Prophecy, Mimic, the second and third From Dusk Till Dawn flicks and big-ticket pics like the Bourne and Spider-man sequels, and is currently helming the Red Dawn remake for MGM. Burg has a less action-filled résumé; he previously wrote the lighter likes of Trojan War and Alaska before getting into the Internet business, »

I was on the Austin, TX set of the Platinum Dunes remake of Friday the 13th last June and, while it wasn't until months later that it was confirmed, I don't think anyone on that set thought that the Platinum Dunes Wouldn't get to do the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street. The Dunes triumvirate of executive producer Michael Bay and producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, have been on a rampage through the horror genre since the production company's formation in 2001 and, with the buzz surrounding Friday the 13th, I'm sure I wasn't the only one not surprised when the Dunes deal for A Nightmare on Elm Street was inked in December. They have the principals in place - screenwriter Wesley Strick, director Samuel Bayer, Jackie Earle Haley as the iconic Freddy Krueger and young leads Kyle Gallner and recently announced Rooney Mara as Quentin and Nancy, the »
