Dinner for Schmucks

Opens: July 23rd 2010

Cast: Steve Carell, Paul Rudd, Zach Galifianakis, Bruce Greenwood, David Walliams

Director: Jay Roach

Summary: A renowned publisher encourages his friends to invite the most pathetic guests possible for their weekly dinner party. Just as they find the most pathetic man yet, the host is injured and ends up trapped with the man all night long.

Analysis: A remake of director Francis Veber's 1998 César award-winning "Le Diner des cons", 'Schmucks' is one of the highest profile comedies of next year with one of the strongest casts for the genre in recent memory. It also marks the return of "Austin Powers" and "Meet the Parents" helmer Jay Roach who has produced several films in recent years but hasn't directed since 2004's "Meet the Fockers".

The question now lies not in the performers or director but the material itself and whether a Gallic comedy can …

Watch This: 'Lars and the Real Girl' Director's Super Bowl Commercial

2 February 2009 12:21 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

He may have had a bit of an unfortunate blip with Mr. Woodcock, but director Craig Gillespie has proven that he can make engaging stories out of the mundane and strange -- so much so that he's quickly becoming an example of just how possible it is to make simplicity engaging. He made the world of Real Doll love absolutely wonderful with Lars and the Real Girl, he's helming the heck out of Diablo Cody's United States of Tara, and he made one awesome Super Bowl ad for cars.com -- which you can check out above.

The commercial shouldn't be entirely surprising since Gillespie has been whipping up commercials for years, and won a DGA Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Commercials in 2006. But it's still good fun, and a great example about how a simple idea executed just so can be much more satisfying than a big, …

Brendan Fraser Fighting Cute Critters

28 January 2009 5:33 PM, PST | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

I mean this is the nicest way possible, but what the hell has happened to Brendan Fraser? Let's all think back to the year 1998 when I was convinced Fraser was going to get the credit as an actor he so deserved after starring in Gods and Monsters. Then, when he took his spot as Indiana Jones' heir apparent in The Mummy, it seemed like he was slated to be the next big thing. But, here we are 10 years later, and let's just say I'm glad I didn't put any money on my earlier claims. Fraser has been happy to hang in the kiddie flick ghetto, and judging by this latest announcement, he has no plans on leaving any time soon. Variety reports that the man has just signed to star in the family-friendly flick Furry Vengeance for Summit Entertainment (since I will give credit where credit is due, I have …
