Trailer
Garrison Keillor lays a nice layer of homey ease to the low-key chaos in the backstage drama of the screen reworking of his public radio variety show, directed by Robert Altman from a script by Keillor. Big name actors fill out the show's familiar personalities -- Kevin Kline as Guy Noir (now the stage doorman), John C. Reilly and Woody Harrelson as Dusty and Lefty (here a singing cowboy act) -- and Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin fill out the show's talent roster as a down home sister act. Lindsay Lohan is Streep's gloomy daughter, Tommy Lee Jones a corporate suit who arrives to close down the theater, Virginia Madsen is an angel of death, radio show regulars Tim Russell, Sue Scott, and sound effects man Tom Keith play the show staff, and Maya Randolph is the radio ranch ramrod, corralling the strays and pushing the herd onstage.
