Fun Stuff

Trivia:
According to some history accounts, when Marie Antoinette met the rioters on the balcony of the palace, she had her eldest daughter with her. This was supposedly in order to augment a sense of sympathy for the doomed queen. more
Goofs:
Anachronisms: The masquerade ball held in the Paris Opera is clearly seen to take place in the Palais Garnier in Paris, built between 1861 and 1875 during the reign of Napoleon III. This impressive opera house, with its lavishly decorated and easily recognizable grand staircase replaced the old and less sumptuous opera house of Rue le Peletier. more
Quotes:
Marie-Antoinette: There are a lot of people at Versailles today.
Madame du Barry: Yes there are.
Marie-Antoinette: [walking away] Those are my last words to that woman.

FAQ

Why did Sophia Coppola choose to base the film specifically on Antonia Fraser's book?
Why was Marie Antoinette the only one who wanted to clap at the opera? (and why the second time we see her clapping, no one else would?)

After seeing this movie i just have to log in and leave my comment. I am no movie critic and don't understand much about the fine points of movie making, i may not notice bad acting or lousy work of the director. One thing i know is history. It happens to be that historical movies is my favorite genre and this movie can not be called historical. No matter what they think in Hollywood wearing a costume and riding horses still doesn't make the the movie historical.

Marie Antoinette is presented almost as some kind of a village girl that is amazed by the french royal court and the etiquette at the beginning of the movie. The rest of the movie seems to me like a modern teenage party in which all the participants r wearing 18th century clothes. No historical events, no historical accuracy!
