Jason Reitman: Flying Solo

9 November 2009 9:00 AM, PST | TribecaFilm.com | See recent Tribeca Film news »

You can learn a lot from director Jason Reitman; after all, with only three features to his name - Thank You For Smoking, Juno, and the upcoming George Clooney vehicle Up in the Air - he's already established himself as one of the brightest filmmakers around, with a knack for making smart and human comedies, and he's barely into his thirties. For Reitman, the reason he gravitated so strongly towards his biggest hit, the Oscar-winning Juno, which made stars out of screenwriter Diablo Cody and actress Ellen Page, is because he loved the unusual decisions of its characters. 'I have no idea where my characters come from or what they do,' said Reitman. 'I just think of them as human beings.' Keeping in mind Reitman's love of 'unusual decisions,' it's no wonder that he veered from the usual Apple Store Meet the Filmmaker Talk format of a moderator, »

Meet Dana E. Glauberman, Jason Reitman's Editor Extraordinaire

4 November 2009 6:40 AM, PST | Movieline | See recent Movieline news »

Every other year or so, film editor Dana E. Glauberman gets The Call. The tradition began quietly enough in 2005 with an indie adaptation of the novel Thank You For Smoking. Yet by last spring, as the first of Jason Reitman's footage from the set of Up in the Air arrived in Glauberman's editing suite, the duo's meticulous shaping and storytelling process began anew on their biggest project to date. Expectations run high after their previous collaboration Juno became an Oscar-winning box-office smash, and indeed Up in the Air is already showing similar promise after its Toronto Film Festival premiere. But to hear Glauberman tell it when Movieline caught up with her this week, that's just another day at the office. »

An 'Eclipse' Stunt Man And A 'Boondock Saints' Pumpkin In Today's Twitter-Wood

27 October 2009 3:45 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Someone with a steady hand sent Sean Patrick Flannery a picture of the best "Boondock Saints" jack-o-lantern you're likely to see this year, and he retweeted in kind. There really wasn't any other choice for the Twitter Pic of the Day.

In other tweets, David Slade continued his "Eclipse" posting with a shot of one of the film's stunt co-coordinators and Rachelle LeFevre admitted to crying during "Where the Wild Things Are." Check out those post below along an old clip of The Ultimate Warrior that Aziz Ansari dug up, how Eliza Dushku feels about Dungeons & Dragons, who wants her at his table to play and how Ice-t is faring at "Borderlands" on his Xbox 360. I'm @brianwarmoth, and this is the Twitter-Wood report for October 27, 2009.

Jason Reitman Has Seen Part Of Scott Pilgrim, And He Loves It

27 October 2009 9:00 AM, PDT | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »

You should start by knowing that Jason Reitman (director of Thank You For Smoking and Juno) and Edgar Wright (director of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) are pals, that they look almost exactly alike, and every now and then refer to each other as husbands. I know this all because I follow both of them on Twitter (Jason here, Edgar here), and their conversations with each other about filmmaking, editing, and traveling to do film promotion can sometimes be the best reason to be on Twitter. Anyway, this is all a long way of explaining that you ought to take the following sentence with a grain of salt: Jason Reitman has seen 30 minutes of Scott Pilgrim, and calls it "a Matrix for love and how we are willing to fight for it." He put it all on his Twitter feed after Wright showed him 30 minutes of the film, »

Jason Reitman Reviews Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim

26 October 2009 2:52 PM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Well it looks like Edgar Wright has been showing a few close friends rough cut footage from his big screen adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. When I was in London last week, I had a chance to talk briefly with Jason Schwartzman, who told me that he had screened the opening 20 minutes, which he seemed very enthusiastic about. I tried to sneak my way into the UK editing bay, but unfortunately had no luck (believe me, I tried my hardest). And earlier today on Twitter, director Jason Reitman (Up in the Air, Thank You For Smoking, Juno) posted a mini glowing review of his thoughts on 30 minutes that Wright screened for him in London. In London, @edgarwright showed me 30min of Scott Pilgrim. While sworn to secrecy (so much, surprised blood wasn't demanded) I will say this: It is a game changer for Edgar and the genre. It »

New Clip From ‘Up in the Air’

20 October 2009 6:12 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

Up in the Air came off the festival circuit with raves, many of which cried Oscar. The trailer did nothing to put out the fire, in fact, it only stoked our interest here at Screen Rant. Now, a new clip from the film is online and it looks great!

The film is directed by Jason Reitman of Juno fame and stars George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a professional down-sizer. He’s the guy execs hire when they can’t bring themselves to drop the F-word in front of their employees - “you’re fired.” The job keeps Bingham on the road most of the year and he’s developed a life goal of racking up ten million frequent flier miles, for reasons he explains in the clip below.

And while this goal (a major plot point) sounds unusual, if not shallow or just plain silly, it’s not a joke. »

The 'Twilight' Un-Tanning Process, Body Paint And Latoya Jackson In Today's Twitter-Wood

20 October 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

There must have been a "New Moon"-related tweet mandate out today, because the faces of "Twilight" clogged my Twitter feed today. David Slade posted an "Eclipse" update, Peter Facinelli TwitPic'd from his makeup chair and BooBoo Stewart posted a photo op moment with Latoya Jackson. Even Gil Birmingham contributed an off-screen group shot.

Candid pics showed up from non-"Twilight"-ers as well, though. Ken Jeong, Sarah Silverman and Eli Roth are all prominently features in today's tweet mix, in addition to Rainn Wilson on Bill Cosby and Mark Webber's on-set shot from his new movie "The Lie." It's a photo-heavy day full of links in the Twitter-Wood report for October 20, 2009.

'Eclipse' Reveals, Eli Roth's Advice And 'Hot Fuzz' Slash Fiction In Today's Twitter-Wood

19 October 2009 4:00 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

Lucky you, Movies Blog readers! Not only do you get a second helping of Twitter-Wood reportage today; I also come bearing the answer your last-minute Halloween costume plans if you've been pondering how to pull the perfect outfit together from Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds." Eli Roth tweeted a helpful diagram for anyone looking to replicate his Sgt. Donny Donowitz look, which helped earn his character his racy nickname "The Bear Jew."

In other sanitized-for-the-sake-of-this-column tweeting, Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost collaborated on a slash fiction parody of their movie "Hot Fuzz," today, which apparently gained a lot of followers for Wright. Check out the barely family friendly ones after the jump, along with the "Eclipse" reveal planned for the "Twilight" Twitter account, Aziz Ansari's amusement park adventures and Jason Reitman's breakfast with the Chemical Brothers. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for October 19, 2009.

Up in the Air clip

After screening Up In The Air at Tiff, Chris Bumbray gave the movie an excellent 9/10. His review actually made me more interested in the project from director Jason Reitman (Juno, Thank You For Smoking). George Clooney plays Ryan Bingham who has the ballsy job of flying from city to city firing workers because their own bosses can't do it themselves. Bingham has been quite accustomed to the perks of the job, like meeting gorgeous women (Vera Farmiga). Unfortunately his fun ride is... »

BFI Lff Review: Up In The Air

18 October 2009 2:32 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

Jason Reitman’s feature follow up to the Oscar Winning Juno is many things. Up In The Air is an indictment of the economic misfortunes and the erosive nature of corporate culture, it is a road movie populated by dysfunctional family members (who are not related), it is a love story in reverse peppered with distant epiphanies and existential pondering, it is not Juno, and it is funny. Very funny.

Ryan Bingham (a nuanced performance from man of the festival, George Clooney) is a corporate downsizer for hire. He spends most of his life in airports, flying to industrial states in America, visiting workplaces and firing the staff. When we meet him he is on the receiving end of abuse, disbelief, emotional fallout from blue collar workers being let go of (firing is not a word he or his company use). He is a man of routine and control and »

Richard Kelly's Balloon Boy Movie, Frankie Muniz' Brush With Death And Jesus In Today's Twitter-Wood

16 October 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

If the rights to the balloon boy story haven't been swiped up yet, they may have a buyer in "Donnie Darko" director Richard Kelly. He tweeted his questionable interest today even as balloon boy mania continued to occupy posts all over Twitter-Wood. Someone has apparently even started up a fake @BoyInTheBalloon account, which reached out to Andy Milonakis.

In other tweetage, Frankie Muniz survived a run-in with a dangerous snake, which may have come closer to killing him than any race he's driven in. Read all of those tweets along with pics from a couple "Twilight" actors, Fred Durst's anti-Facebook stance and the film that even Jesus apparently supports. They're all after the jump in the Twitter-Wood report for October 16, 2009.

Katie Holmes has enrolled her daughter in a Catholic school. The "Thank You For Smoking" actress reportedly infuriated Scientologist husband Tom Cruise with her insistence that three-year-old Suri attend the Catholic Charities Yawkey Center For Early Education And Learning in Boston, Massachusetts.

A source close to the couple - who are living in Boston while Tom shoots his latest movie "Wichita" - said: "Katie has been listening to her parents who are devout Catholics."

"She is not convinced by Scientology and has told Tom that she wants Suri to be educated as a Catholic - as she was."

"They had been having huge problems agreeing on her school. To say they were having arguments it putting it mildly - but Tom came around to the idea in the end."

Twitter-Wood's sort of like that today with good news following Elizabeth Taylor's heart surgery, Emmy Rossum with cotton candy, Paris Hilton with a monkey, and Arnold Schwarzenegger's happy breakfast picture.

All of those pics come in addition to an announcement by Jason Reitman that "Ghostbusters" fans should not want him to direct "Ghostbusters 3," as well as an on-set shot of Rainn Wilson with the band Frightened Rabbit, who recently got a tour of the office used in "The Office." Up in the Air Trailer

2 October 2009 8:14 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

George Clooney plays a kind of specialist. He fires people. Like in Michael Clayton, he cleans up situations which his bosses deem too messy, dealing with those employees who literally need to be escorted out of the building by police. As such, he travels a lot, and that distance would be enough to put him on the moon. That’s the concept behind Jason Reitman’s latest film, Up in the Air, which is like his previous full length features, Thank You for Smoking and Juno, in that people who treat the world with casual indifference by looming just a little above the fray get too close to the heat and are mollified by the very thing they try to be indifferent to. In the hands of a lesser director, such stories might sound like routine Lifetime movies of the week (you know, like a doctor who fixes hearts, but »

Up In The Air Theatrical Trailer

1 October 2009 11:39 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Barely a month after a teaser and a clip, here's the full theatrical trailer for Up In The Air; the eagerly anticipated pairing of star George Clooney and director Jason Reitman. As you'll know by now, Clooney is the morally empty "corporate downsizer" on a mission to collect a million air miles as he travels around eviscerating small businesses, until circumstances start converging to prick his conscience. The new trailer obviously showcases Clooney, doing his wounded Michael Clayton corporate schtick, but it also gives us a good look at Vera Farmiga and Anna Kendrick as the female leads, and glimpses of what's sure to be sterling support from Jason Bateman, Jk Simmons, and flavour-of-the-year Zach Galifianakis. The mainstream smarts of Reitman's Juno, plus some of the edge of his Thank You For Smoking reapplied, plus Clooney on top of his game, plus sterling co-stars and supporting cast, equals palpable hit. »

Jason Reitman’s Up in the Air Trailer Arrives On Time

1 October 2009 8:02 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

I feel as if destiny has connected me with Jason Reitman's latest movie, the high-flying dramedy Up in the Air. I just finished a long week at Fantastic Fest, where I saw George Clooney star in another film, The Men Who Stare at Goats. I also just started planning to cover next month's Austin Film Festival, where Up in the Air is the closing night film. And to top it all off, I've been to the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport twice today, transporting various Fantastic Fest house guests who were flying home. Needless to say, I am ready to see this theatrical trailer. Luckily, the folks at Paramount and Apple are obliging my state of readiness this evening, as they've debuted the brand new Up in the Air trailer for all to see. You can watch it below, then head down to the comment section below and let me know what you think of it. If »
