Trivia:
This film originally came from a script by the director Darren Lynn Bousman which was called "The Desperate". After trying for years to get it made but being told repeatedly that it was too violent, finally a company wanted to do it because they suspected "Saw" which was becoming a hit at Sundance might blow out big and they wanted to capitalize on its success. Some producers even described Bousman's script as "Too Saw-ish". Just before he was about to close a deal to make the movie, Saw (2004) opened huge at the box-office and the next day he received a call, and the producers asked if he could change it around to "Saw 2". Leigh Whannel (who wrote the first "Saw") was then brought on a little later to help Bousman with creating his original idea into a proper sequel to "Saw". more

Great and gory sequel, 31 October 2005
8/10

Sequels, with a few exceptions, have a tendency to be very bad. In the wake of all this being let down by them I was initially unimpressed with the idea of a brilliant horror film like "Saw" to have a sequel. It seemed like too much of a cash in a successful revenue and good reception of the original and while this one isn't as good it is a very good continuation.

The story starts with a gruesome scene where a victim of the infamous Jigasaw Killer has his head squashed by a "death mask." A detective, with problems outside and in his line of work, investigates only to find that Jigsaw has special interest in him. The crime scene yields a crucial bit of information that takes the police where they have been wanting to go for a long time: the Jigsaw Killer's lair. Once there they find Jigsaw, but not without him already have set up a new "game." The police find that Jigsaw has locked up several people in a mysterious house and one of them is the detectives son. All out horror ensues.

The film is very much like the first one in style only this time the gore meter has been kicked up a good 20 or so notches. There are more sickeningly inventive traps and blood curdling death scenes to watch as the seemingly helpless group locked in the house try to get out and the police try to find them. In a nice twist the film makes a strong connection to the first one and that is what makes it a strong sequel. There is no "it just more of the same feeling," but rather a thought out continuation of the events in the first film. The only down side is that if you thought the first film was bad then your in for the same thing here, but everyone should find this a well made horror film. Just be sure to see the first one before this. 8/10

Rated R: gruesome bloody violence, gore, torture, profanity, and drugs. Whew!
