Bloody Disgusting learned today of some major news. Stephen Susco, who penned The Grudge and The Grudge 2, is currently doing a rewrite on Paramount Pictures' The Butcherhouse Chronicles, which is to be produced by Platinum Dunes (Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street). Frank Borin is no longer attached to direct. Originally written by Michael Hidalgo, Butcherhouse is a darkly comic horror stage show about four high school students out to discover the truth behind a mysterious old (haunted) property known as the Butcherhouse. In addition, Susco also has been developing The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3D for Twisted Pictures. No word on where that project is at. »

With Michael Bay and his buddy Brad Fuller recently becoming too occupied with their other horror remakes to worry about another sequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, their Platinum Dunes production company has opted not to renew the rights to the franchise. Normally I would think this was great news, but instead it appears that a new deal is being worked out with Twisted Pictures, the same folks behind the never-ending Saw series. Yay. According to Variety [1], they are planning to restart the franchise all over again, with Stephen Susco (The Grudge, The Grudge 2) getting the call to "contemporize the storyline" for a new Leatherface film. As you might expect, this new Texas Chainsaw remake is also being planned as a 3-D release. Is it just me or is 3-D now becoming a new excuse to remake things that have already been remade? It's getting pretty ridiculous. Carl Mazzocone, »

Asian superstar Edison Chen is returning to the big screen for the first time since a sex photo scandal threatened to ruin his career.
The Hong Kong-based singer/actor hit headlines last year after over 1,000 intimate shots of him engaged in sexual acts with several different women - all rising stars in Asia - hit the web.
The furore around the sex snaps forced Chen to flee Hong Kong and the controversy ended the entertainment careers of most of the girls involved.
But studio bosses have decided to give Chen another chance, and have signed him up to appear in new English-language comedy Almost Perfect.
The film tells the story of a girl who juggles her boyfriend and her family, and is reportedly set to his Chinese cinemas next year.
Chen has previously appeared in Infernal Affairs, The Grudge 2, and also had a cameo in last year's Batman movie The Dark Knight. »

Debbie Rochon, often described as a scream queen herself, wrote in an article originally published in Gc Magazine that "a true Scream Queen isn't The Perfect Woman. She's sexy, seductive, but most importantly 'attainable' to the average guy. Or so it would seem." Nastassja Kinski Films: To the Devil a Daughter (1976) [1] Cat People (1982) [2] The Day the World Ended (2001) [3] Inland Empire (2006) [4] Kinski will always be remembered for the iconic photograph shot by Richard Avedon (with a snake coiled around her body) and her role in Paul Schrader's (not so good) remake of Cat People. Needless to say, it was a hit at the box office and Kinski deservingly received a Saturn Award for Best Actress. Caroline Munro Films: The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) [5] Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) [6] Dracula A.D. 1972 [7] Maniac (1980) [8] Faceless (1987) [9] Demons 6 (1989) [10] Caroline Munro seduced audiences in her Hammer roles in films like Dracula A.D. 1972, but for gore hounds, »

A direct-to-dvd sequel to a marginal horror flick, a surprisingly bad-ass Liam Neeson, a direct-to-dvd sequel to a cult movie about a time-traveling rabbit and a little-known thriller with Anne Hathaway tops off DVD Tuesday for today May, 12th.
Taken, S. Darko, Passengers, The Grudge 3, and Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, oh my.
Warm up your Netflix queues.
S. Darko, the sequel to the 2001 genre-bending thriller Donnie Darko, was supposed to be released on wide release to your neighborhood cineplex. It didn’t happen because, as it turns out, according to big-wig Studio execs, nobody wants to pay upwards of $10 to see it. (But we’d do it for Street Fighter: Legend of Chun-Li. Go figure.) But, ironically, Darko fans may pay $15 for the DVD.
The film stars Daveigh Chase, reprising her role as Donnie’s (originally played by Jake Gyllenhaal who does not appear in the sequel) younger sister, »

“Because of my success at Screamfest, Ghost House Pictures asked me to film a short film called Mouse Trap for their mobile phone division,” explained Wilkins. “From there, they asked me to do a series of short films for The Grudge 2 which was a blast. Dipping your toes into those waters was a huge joy for me.”

As if any more proof were needed, The Grudge 3—the third in the American series based on Takashi Shimizu’s Japanese screen quartet, the first to go direct to DVD and the first of any of these not helmed by Shimizu—demonstrates that this concept has been well and truly exhausted. Particularly given that this sequel was created not by untried up-and-comers or music-video graduates, but a couple of guys who have shown themselves to have true horror chops.
The Grudge 3 was directed by Toby Wilkins and scripted by Brad Keene, who held those posts respectively on Splinter and From Within, two of the smarter and more satisfying independent fright films to emerge in the last year. Yet even their best efforts are defeated by the necessity of adhering to a formula that has now become familiar well past the point of banality. No matter what the context, »
