Cast Gathers at the Edge of the World

13 hours ago | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

Actor Charles Dance's sophomore outing in the director's chair is set to be a supernatural one called The Inn at the Edge of the World . Shooting is anticipated to start sometime in the first quarter of 2010 with actors Michael Gambon ( The Omen redo), Stephen Fry ( V for Vendetta ) and Penelope Wilton ( Match Point ). That's a strong cast for this story of a group of people who spend Christmas on a remote Scottish island. Flashes of "supernatural mysticism," however, make it a holiday they'll never forget. If you recall, Dance starred in David Fincher's Alien 3 and was the villain in The Last Action Hero . He started directing with the film Ladies in Lavender . »

Secret Identity: Who Should Play Catwoman In 'Batman 3'?

5 November 2009 1:02 PM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

In all likelihood, we're still quite a ways off from any real news regarding a third "Batman" movie from director Christopher Nolan—if he's even returning to the franchise, that is—but that's not stopping us from wondering which Dark Knight villain we should see in the inevitable sequel.

There's no shortage of rogues to choose from, but the one I think is an absolute necessity is Catwoman. Given the state of Bruce Wayne's life after the events of "The Dark Knight," this feels like the perfect time to introduce Selina Kyle—the woman who could either help mend Bruce's fences, or bring all of the walls tumbling down.

If Nolan, David Goyer and the other folks at DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. decide to go the Catwoman route, I think that these five actresses would be great for the role.

Remember, remember, the fifth of November, and the inspiration for 'V For Vendetta'

5 November 2009 11:54 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

On this day in 1605, Sir Thomas Knyvet, a justice of the peace, found Guy Fawkes in a cellar below the English Parliament building, involved in a plot to blow up Parliament itself. The day was later known as "Guy Fawkes Day" and served as an inspiration for Alan Moore and David Lloyd's graphic novel, V for Vendetta.

Today the folks across the pond remember, remember the fifth of November in honor of a sense of independence and a shaking of fists at British authority. While we reserve fireworks for summery July 4th, today is their excuse to blow things up and set things on fire. Really, every country should follow some such tradition of blowing things up in good spirits, but in light of recent world politics, let's not go there.

Or if we do, let's wear an awesome mask while we're at it.

The Yankees, Guy Fawkes Day And New Jim Lee Art In Today's Twitter Report

5 November 2009 11:01 AM, PST | MTV Splash Page | See recent MTV Splash Page news »

Simon Pegg tweeted an impassioned appreciation for "V for Vendetta" today in honor of Guy Fawkes Day, proving that he has not forgotten the 5th November. Also not forgetting were Jill Thompson, Neil Kleid and a few other I couldn't fit in.

Jon Favreau, it seems, didn't have time to commemorate anything last night, as he was hard at work editing "Iron Man 2." If he was following Joe Quesada or Matt Fraction, however, he probably kept up on the game's details just fine. Scope out all of those posts below, along with a new Jim Lee page and Geoff Johns' mystery project that he wants to work with Greg Rucka on.

It's all in the Twitter Report for November 5, 2009.

Guy Fawkes Day Remembered On MTV Splash Page Through The Lens Of 'V For Vendetta'

5 November 2009 9:30 AM, PST | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

From Splash Page: Do you remember, remember, the fifth of November? Aside from being the day after the New York Yankees won the 2009 World Series, it's also widely known as Guy Fawkes Day—a day that has some significance not just for our revolutionary-minded readers, but also for comic book fans in general thanks to Alan Moore's "V For Vendetta."

Guy Fawkes, a 17th century revolutionary, attempted to blow up England's Parliament building on November 5, 1605, in what is now commonly referred to as as the Gunpowder Plot. After getting caught, tortured and subsequently executed by British authorities, Fawkes' efforts and likeness became immortalized through parables, rhymes and other such stories—including comic books.

Photo Gallery: Natalie Portman in V Magazine

4 November 2009 8:05 AM, PST | Celebuzz.com | See recent Celebuzz news »

Wow, we've never seen Natalie Portman quite like this before. The V for Vendetta actress graces the cover of the latest V Magazine, rocking a bold new look and offering some thoughts on very important topics—such as how Internet porn sites affect her career. Says Natalie, “[O]nline bullsh*t interferes with what I want to do artistically. I’m not opposed to sexuality or nudity in a film, but I’m very opposed to pornography sites and you’re pretty much giving them material if you do any of that.” Hopefully, Portman won't allow this attitude to hamper her upcoming sex scene with Mila Kunis in Black Swan. Review: V... It's the New X!

4 November 2009 2:19 AM, PST | doorQ.com | See recent doorQ.com news »

Ever since the original V TV miniseries hit the airwaves in 1983 (you can trust me, I was there ;-P), the letter v has been working it’s way up the ladder in popularity. After all, before that, all v really had to its name was V-Day and a crappy holiday where you try to see how many cavities you can give the object of your affection in one day.

It’s had some pretty stiff competition, though. A-f have always seemed to be pretty popular in the school grading system, while N and Y have made their fame through surveys. The most notorious letter of all, though, has to be X. After all, everything is cooler with an X!

As mentioned before, the letter v seems to be gaining more and more popularity. It helped spawn two V miniseries in the early 80s, followed by a TV show in the »

'Eclipse' Actress' Site Gets Hacked, U2 And More Halloween Costumes In Today's Twitter-Wood

26 October 2009 3:30 PM, PDT | MTV Movies Blog | See recent MTV Movies Blog news »

"Eclipse" actress Jodelle Ferland claims that hackers descended on her website, which would explain the disarray currently on display if you visit Jodelle-Ferland.net. Her "Twilight" series costar Ashley Greene seemed to be having a much better weekend, however, taking in the U2 concert at the Rose Bowl Sunday night. Greene was joined by Danny DeVito, Demi Moore, and a host of others who tweeted pictures from the night.

Elsewhere, Tom Felton and Emmy Rossum are still undecided on their Halloween costumes, but Felton has officially nixed a Dalmation outfit and Rossum may be warming up to Pippi Longstocking. Check out what they had to say after the jump along with Edward Norton doing yoga, Billy Burke's "Harry Potter" shout-out and Stephen Fry's new secret video game role. It's all in the Twitter-Wood report for October 26, 2009.

‘Lobo’ & ‘Judge Dredd’ Won’t Rely on Comic Book Guys

26 October 2009 1:49 PM, PDT | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

What are the chances that this is good news?

/Film relayed to us that comic book writer  Alan Grant mentioned at the McM Expo (the little sister of Comic Con that takes place across the pond) that neither he, Keith Giffen nor Simon Bisley have been contacted about consulting for the upcoming Lobo film and the same goes for him and John Wagner regarding a new Judge Dredd.  “Jock,” (a.k.a. British Comic book artist Mark Simpson) who’s been working on concept art for Dredd stated plainly that no one’s been tapped to direct the film.  How plainly, you ask?  This plainly!

“…there’s not a director attached at the moment”.

Crazy.  Anyway, wanna little context for all these names and movies?  Then read on, people.

Let’s deal with Lobo first.  He’s the central character in the eponymous comic published by DC that follows him »

Ninja Assassin Gets Karate Chopped

22 October 2009 12:49 AM, PDT | www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news »

Ninja Assassin definitely has a lot going for it. You got James McTeigue directing, nice. You got the Wachowski brothers on as producers, cool. And you have freaking ninjas! But, it looks like this action flick has no depth. Not that we were expecting much, but now we're told that even an infant can karate chop his way through this story. Eesh.

Ninja Assassin Reviewed

The only thing I don't like about the review posted by Variety for Ninja Assassin is that they compare it to V for Vendetta, like V for Vendetta is a bad film. I adore V for Vendetta; how dare you! Check out a snippet below.

Seemingly made to capitalize on a dubious CG innovation -- namely, the slicing of bodies in half by whizzing five-pointed stars -- "Ninja Assassin" has little else to recommend it, not even laughs. Working again with the Wachowski brothers as producers, »

Stephen Fry Says He's Writing Jackson's 'Dambusters'

20 October 2009 11:37 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Peter Jackson can still do anything he wants. He's loaded, his movies have earned everyone involved a ton of money, and if The Lovely Bones excels, he'll have even blancher carte or something. With Tintin and The Hobbit expecting big things, too, well...you can do the math.

But Jackson has his eye on another project, one that's been mentioned for some time, and it appears that it might have his full attention after he makes it through the next couple of years. Ain't It Cool News heard that Stephen Fry (V for Vendetta) has confirmed he's begun work on the script for the remake of The Dam Busters, saying that Jackson is so involved already that he has commissioned the construction of Lancaster bomber airplanes in his native New Zealand so filming can begin whenever Jackson's ready. »

Peter Jackson is Moving Like 'Dam Busters'

19 October 2009 9:15 PM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Peter Jackson, like Steven Spielberg and Ridley Scott, has a full roster of film projects on his plate. But that's not stopping him from lining up his next project, according to a scooper over at AICN.

After wrapping post on The Lovely Bones, working on Tintin with Spielberg, and moving into pre-production on The Hobbit prequels, Jackson will next tackle the long rumored remake of the WWII thriller, The Dam Busters.

The scooper tells AICN that while attending a charity event, writer/actor Stephen Fry (V for Vendetta) confirmed that Dam Busters is in pre-production and that he is currently writing the script for it. He also mentioned that Peter Jackson is heavily involved and has even built the Lancaster Bomber aircraft in New Zealand so that filming can get underway.

No production dates have yet been announced, however.

Viff 09: Review of James McTeigue’s Ninja Assassin

Year: 2009

Directors: James McTeigue

Writers: J. Michael Straczynski / Matthew Sand

Review by: Marina Antunes

Rating: 6 out of 10

[Editor's note: Big ups to our gal-pal Marina of the famous Row Three crew for supplying this great review from Viff '09]

Big props to studios who make big budget B-movies: extravaganzas of sex, action and blood that titillate the senses, but keep the mind on the back burner while still managing to say something about our culture. Arguments that all Hollywood blockbusters are B-movies are somewhat valid, but few films achieve the coveted status of “good B-movie” and though Ninja Assassin certainly tries to get there and almost succeeds, it simply doesn’t manage to be as fun as needs to in order to succeed.

That’s not to say it doesn’t try. The opening sequence in James McTeigue’s V for Vendetta follow-up is a spectacular feast of darkness, blood and mind bending martial arts, a spectacle that starts the film off on great footing and which mixes »

'V' gets cloudy promotion

19 October 2009 11:05 AM, PDT | EW.com - PopWatch | See recent EW.com - PopWatch news »

ABC is taking to the skies to hype its upcoming alien invasion series V: Skywriting! It's true. ABC will be clouding blue skies with big ole Vs to generate buzz for the series and confuse fans of True Blood. It's a fine way to promote something, especially if you subscribe to the belief "If it's good enough for Tori and Dean, it's good enough for ." I can only assume this was the first draft of the skywriting pitch (I watch Mad Men, I know how "pitches" work): I guess it makes sense then that they settled on just "V, »

Viff 2009: 'Ninja Assassin'

14 October 2009 6:43 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Ninjas used to be scarier. In the B-movies of the 1970s, the ninja was a mysterious and occult figure, cold and soulless, that was to be overcome by the likes of Chuck Norris.

But in the past thirty years, the ninja has become commodified. Chris Farley's Beverly Hills Ninja and the Ask a Ninja Web site are clever, but they are evidence that the ninja has become a joke.

Producers Andy and Larry Wachowski and director James McTeigue are trying to reappropriate the ninja character in Ninja Assassin. Starring Rain — who appeared in Speed Racer, also from the Wachowskis —  the film is both an attempt to put the fearsomeness back into the ninja, as well as an homage to those B-movies that made the ninja so iconic to western audiences.

And it almost works.

In Ninja Assassin the ninja is something to be feared. They are ghost-like, literally disappearing »

John Hurt to be a BFI Fellow

7 October 2009 12:56 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

As part of the 53rd London Film Festival the BFI will be making John Hurt its latest Fellow, according to the BBC.

Hurt has acted in over 150 film and TV productions, from the fuzzy black and white of early UK tv series to the biggest Hollywood blockbusters of the day, he is an outstanding actor who brings a sublime, gentle energy to each role. From his iconic turn in The Naked Civil Servant to the role of Mr Ollivander in the Harry Potter films, every role is as unique as the last. That the BFI have chosen to single out one of our finest actors is testament to the quality of his work.

Coincidentally I watched Hurt suffer a heart stopping Heimlich in Ridley Scott’s Alien last night and am now watching the 1997 Robert Zemeckis film Contact, in which Hurt plays a billionaire philanthropist with cosmic ambitions. In both films he steals every scene, »
