Check Out 'Crazy Heart,' 'Young Victoria' And 'A Town Called Panic' In This Week's unLimited

With "Avatar" receiving great reviews and topping critics' awards, the 3-D sci-fi blockbuster will be a huge hit with all kinds of moviegoers this weekend, not just the mainstream audiences that typically go for lots of action and special effects. But if you're looking for an alternative, at least until the crowds die down, there are a few smaller movies opening this week that might be of interest. Actually, two of these spotlighted limited release offerings open tomorrow, so you might have time to see them before you have a chance to see James Cameron's latest. And if you're not in one of the cities playing these films this weekend, hopefully they'll garner enough Oscar buzz to warrant a wider release soon enough.

Bioware Releases Impressive Cast List for Mass Effect 2

14 December 2009 11:27 PM, PST | GameRant | See recent GameRant news »

Bioware is one company that takes its voiceover work seriously. For Star Wars: The Old Republic, Bioware hired over 100 actors to voice over 40 novels worth of written material. And now Bioware has announced that it has hired several top-notch voice actors for the heavily-anticipated sci-fi sequel, Mass Effect 2.

Dr. Ray Muzyka, co-founder of Bioware and Group General Manager of the RPG/Mmo Group of EA, reasoned that,

“[e]motionally engaging narrative is a key design pillar for Bioware, and the top-notch voice talent in Mass Effect 2 helps drive this goal. Credible, powerful personalities are vital to delivering a compelling story experience in Bioware’s games, and we have assembled an amazing ensemble cast that surpasses the very high bar set in the original Mass Effect!”

Did You Hear About "Avatar"?

14 December 2009 7:09 AM, PST | ifc.com | See recent IFC news »

This week we can immerse ourselves in tales of American sentiment, French fantasy, English history, Italian romance and alien invasion.

"Avatar"

After more than a decade on hiatus, James Cameron returns from his days as "King of the World" with a mind on conquering a few new ones in this sci-fi epic that the director maintains will alter the face of moviemaking forever. (Early reviews seem to agree.) A galaxy away from Cameron's days as a miniature maker on Roger Corman's "Battle Beyond the Stars," "Avatar" blends performance capture technology with real world photography to create Pandora, where a troubled U.S. marine (Sam Worthington) is tasked with infiltrating the Na'vi, a tribe of primitive but proud aliens, via a genetically created body, though he finds his loyalties torn when he falls in love with one of their own (Zoe Saldana). The film's reported $300 million price tag is surely »

Review: 'Robot Chicken Season 4' on DVD

13 December 2009 7:17 AM, PST | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

I don’t know how I missed Robot Chicken when it debuted several years back. I heard the buzz, I saw the ads in the comics and still, I somehow never got around to watching. When the Cartoon Network sent over their second Star Wars Special for review, I finally indulged and was delighted.

Now, they sent over the two-disc set collecting the complete fourth season, which goes on sale Tuesday, and watched with great delight. The season, which ran from December 7, 2008 through December 6 (last week!), has 20 episodes and the set also includes The Robot Chicken Full-Assed Christmas Special.

The show is a riotous tour through the pop culture zeitgeist, presuming the viewers know the players from Tila Tequila to the torturous relationship between Thor and Loki. Many of the episodes are loosely connected vignettes while others feel entirely like a collection of whatever was finished in time got included. »

Clip From This Week’s Venture Bros. Episode ‘Self-Medication’

19 November 2009 8:00 AM, PST | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

Over the past few weeks we’ve been able to bring you exclusive preview clips of upcoming episodes of The Venture Bros., which have shown off some of the truly great stories that the show’s creators, Doc Hammer and Jackson Publick, have brought to us this season.

This week’s episode is shrouded in a bit of mystery, but we were able to determine this awesome fact: both Robot Chicken’s Seth Green, Patton Oswalt, John Hodgman of the “I’m a Mac, I’m a PC” Apple Ads lend their voices as guest stars. That information should be enough to keep you glued to your computer screen as you watch the preview clip after the jump.

This season alone, the show has had Kevin Conroy (The voice of Batman), and Brendan Small (Metalocalypse) make an appearance. Check out the clip from “Self-Medication” after the jump and be sure »

Marvel Locates The Warriors Three for Thor

16 November 2009 9:45 PM, PST | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

We reported just yesterday morning that Marvel is preparing to shoot their next big comic book film Thor in January, with director Kenneth Branagh now ready to get the story of gods and warriors from another dimension underway. And with that has come a few last minute casting decisions. Per a Variety article that has mysteriously disappeared off their site since it posted about an hour ago, Marvel has signed Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson and Tadanobu Asano to play The Warriors Three, a trio of Asgardian adventurers who fight alongside the Norse god Thor, who will be played by Chris Hemsworth (Star Trek). Stuart Townsend, who recently wrote and directed the excellent political drama Battle in Seattle, which starred his fiancee Charlize Theron, is best known for playing the vampire Lestat in Queen of the Damned and starring alongside Ryan Reynolds in Chaos Theory. He is also a frequent voice cast contributor to Robot Chicken. Ray Stevenson »

Short Circuit Remake Gets a Director

27 October 2009 4:10 PM, PDT | HeyUGuys.co.uk | See recent HeyUGuys news »

News has come out today on Variety that the Dimension Films remake of Short Circuit is set to be directed by Steve Carr who has most recently directed Mall Cop! The 1986 version of Short Circuit starred Steve Guttenberg, Ally Sheedy and G.W. Bailey as the mean army dude trying to destroy Johnny 5 even though he was aliiiiiiive!

Variety: Scripted by Dan Milano (”Robot Chicken”), the remake is a robot reboot that brings the iconic Johnny 5 into the 21st century. Built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon, Johnny 5 develops a conscience and personality after being hit by lightning. He befriends a lonely boy and his fractured family.

David Foster and Ryan E. Heppe of David Foster Productions will produce with John Hyde of Rehab Entertainment. Jason Taragan, who partners with Carr in Rumpus Entertainment, will be exec producer.

Please don’t wreck one of my childhood favourites Steve! »

'Paul Blart' Director Boards the 'Short Circuit' Remake

27 October 2009 3:40 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

Were it not for Dan Milano (Robot Chicken) writing the screenplay, I'd have very few good things to say about a remake of Short Circuit. What a silly movie. And it was tragically unnecessary back in 1986, which makes me wonder how it will be refitting almost 25 years later.

Dimension is revamping the concept - another bad omen - and the studio has hired Steve Carr to direct. Carr made lemonade out of Paul Blart: Mall Cop, an idea so leaden it absolutely shouldn't have worked. It was a mild distraction, neither good nor terrible, but if you polled anyone who saw it, I doubt they'd say it was well-directed. If anything, they liked Kevin James, who has a way of getting audiences on his side. »

Steve Carr Takes on ‘Short Circut’ Reboot

27 October 2009 12:15 PM, PDT | The Flickcast | See recent The Flickcast news »

As much as I might think this is yet another in a series of needless remakes, reboots and re-imaginings, it seems inevitable that they will keep getting made and my protests will go unheard. So, with that in mind I bring you the news that director Steve Carr (late of Paul Blart: Mall Cop) has been tapped to take on a reboot of the film Short Circuit for Dimension Films.

I’ll let that one sink in for a minute. Okay, now that you are probably making your “Wtf?” face I can tell you some potentially good news about this project. It’s being scripted by Robot Chicken’s Dan Milano, so at least that gives it some kind of chance to be funny — especially if they actually follow the script. Plus, the story, which concerns military robot Johnny 5 who “develops a conscience and personality after being hit by lightning »

'Paul Blart: Mall Cop' Helmer Tackling 'Short Circuit' Remake

27 October 2009 11:48 AM, PDT | Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news »

Considering several, if not most, movie bloggers are all of the same generation I am assuming a lot are like me and grew up watching the 1986 sci-fi classic Short Circuit. However, while I enjoyed the film, I don't think I will be falling in line and getting all that upset about the remake Dimension Films is putting together.

It was announced back in June that Dan Milano ("Robot Chicken") would be scripting the film as original producer David Foster told Variety, "We're bringing Number 5 into the 21st Century and taking advantage of the improvements in robotics that are so massive that robots are now performing heart surgeries in hospitals."

It seems Milano did his job as Variety now informs us Steve Carr, director of Paul Blart: Mall Cop, will direct the new Short Circuit for the studio, but there is no word on when production will begin.

Paul Blart Director Steve Carr Hired for the Short Circuit Remake

27 October 2009 6:44 AM, PDT | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

This right here, this is when we know this movie is going to suck. Say what you will, but there's no giving Steve Carr the benefit of the doubt on this one. Besides directing the pile of crap known as Paul Blart: Mall Cop, his other credits include Are We Done Yet?, Rebound, Daddy Day Care, Dr. Dolittle 2, and Next Friday. Sure, the script, written by "Robot Chicken" writer Dan Milano, might not be that bad, but Carr is going to screw it up. This Short Circuit remake is going to go onto his filmography right there along with the others as yet another piece of crap. This finally confirms what we knew all along - this remake will suck! Variety says that "the remake is a robot reboot that brings the iconic Johnny 5 into the 21st century." Built by the military to be a highly sophisticated weapon, Johnny »

Short Circuit Remake Gets Director of Paul Blart: Mall Cop

27 October 2009 6:18 AM, PDT | FilmJunk | See recent FilmJunk news »

Let's get one thing straight: I don't think anyone has particularly high expectations for the upcoming remake of Short Circuit, and I don't think anyone is kidding themselves when it comes to the quality of the original 1986 comedy. It was pure fluff, but also a memorable cultural artifact from a previous era. Now that Dimension Films have named a director for the 2011 update, however, it's becoming painfully clear just how mediocre and pointless this thing might actually end up being. According to Variety [1], Paul Blart: Mall Cop director Steve Carr has signed on to helm the new Short Circuit. Carr's previous credits also include Dr. Doolittle 2, Daddy Day Care, and Are We Done Yet?, with not a single gem in the bunch. I know some people liked Blart, but I still can't imagine Carr bringing any real charm to this flick. Maybe there's still hope for the remake based on »

Johnny 5 Is Indeed Alive – Thanks To Steve Carr

27 October 2009 6:13 AM, PDT | FilmShaft.com | See recent FilmShaft.com news »

Twenty long months ago, our original online home (Original Sharp Says) was still just a tiny blog, chatting film to the few dozen readers we had – and there were whispers on the horizon of a remake of one of my favourite childhood films – Short Circuit.

Now with a new home, and an ever growing readership, it’s my pleasure to say (in the cheesiest way possible) that Johnny 5 is alive!

Variety reports that “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” director Steve Carr will helm Dimension Films’ remake of the popular 80’s Steve Guttenberg vehicle Short Circuit. “Robot Chicken” writer/actor Dan Milano is penning the script and David Foster, Ryan E. Heppe (David Foster Productions) and John Hyde (Rehab Entertainment) will produce!

Paul Blart: Mall Cop Director to Helm Short Circuit Remake

27 October 2009 5:18 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

We've known that Dimension would remake Short Circuit, and we've known that Robot Chicken writer Dan Milano would be scripting. Now we've got a director: Steve Carr. Who? How about this: he's the guy who directed Paul Blart: Mall Cop. I haven't seen Paul Blart: Mall Cop. It might be more funny than a lot of people would like to admit. (I doubt it, but trying to be fair here.) But knowing that I have no interest in seeing Paul Blart, I'm looking at Carr's resume to get an idea of what to expect. Maybe Paul Blart wasn't really his fault. Let's see...we've got Next Friday to start with. Funny enough, not a bad start. Then...uh-oh. Dr. Doolittle 2. Daddy Day Care and the very aptly titled Are We Done Yet? Yikes. I'm glad I had no particular ties to this remake in the first place. Dan Milano replaced »

Johnny 5 Is Alive! Short Circuit Remake Has Director!

27 October 2009 5:11 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

That’s right, Johnny 5 is coming back to our screens, and they have named their director! Steve Carr, director of (ahem…) comedy classics ‘Paul Blart: Mall Cop’, ‘Daddy Day Care’ and ‘Dr. Dolittle 2′ is to take up the challenge of remaking a cult favourite. Cynical fans may perhaps call into question the choice of director, a man with such a hand in Eddie Murphy’s comedic downfall and with a history of making barely anybody laugh. I was desperate to fit a ‘but’ into that last sentence, any reason that this remake might not be a disgrace to the original, but I’m at a loss. The only possible saving grace is the choice of writer, Dan Milano, who wrote for ‘Robot Chicken’, but that is even arguable, as whilst ‘Robot Chicken’ is (in my opinion, of course) occasionally very amusing, there are a lot of misses, and the »

Paul Blart director to helm Short Circuit remake

Number five is alive. Number five is alive. Number five is alive!

Dimension Films has signed Steve Carr to direct Short Circuit.

The 1986 sci-fi flick starred Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenberg and Fisher Stevens. Carr’s most recent directing was behind the camera of the Kevin James hit Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

Variety reports the film is written by Dan Milano (”Robot Chicken”).

If you’ve forgotten the plot or are under the age of 27, here’s the deal … The military built a highly sophisticated weapon called Johnny 5. But the robot develops a conscience and personality after being hit by lightning.

It appears this time around Johnny 5 will befriend a lonely boy.

At first I was upset with the Blart director doing the remake. But it fits. The first film was cheesy as hell in 1986, so there’s no reason to expect anything else with this one. The one wrinkle is Milano writing the screenplay. »

Steve Carr directing Short Circuit reboot

27 October 2009 1:34 AM, PDT | TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news »

The 21st century reboot of '80s cult favourite Short Circuit has been rumbling along for a while now, but it finally has a director: Steve Carr. Carr's last job was Paul Blart: Mall Cop and while it made a lot of money, it wasn't particularly A) funny or b) good. So we can't say this raises our hopes for the quality level of Johnny 5's return to the screen. At least the script - or one version of it - is from Robot Chicken writer Dan Milano, which will hopefully guarantee some chuckles as the story switches to the former military robot...

Short Circuit Remake Goes The Way of the Mall Cop

26 October 2009 10:55 PM, PDT | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

Johnny Five is still alive. And unfortunately, he's in the hands of a Mall Cop director. Dimension Films has signed Steve Carr (Paul Blart: Mall Cop) to direct Short Circuit, the remake of the 1986 sci-fi film starring Ally Sheedy and Steve Guttenberg. This abomination, er, remake will be penned by Robot Chicken scribe Dan Milano, and will bring Johnny 5 (originally voiced by Tim Blaney) into the 21st century. This time around, Number 5 will be a highly sophisticated military weapon who develops a conscience and personality after being struck by lightning. But instead of making friends with a babe on par with Ms. Sheedy, Johnny 5 will this time be connecting with a lonely boy and his fractured family. In a syllable, ugh. As a major fan of the original movie, I reserve comment out of sheer unadulterated anger. Please join me in protest below. »
