Yes, the 1987 Norwegian film "Veiviseren" was called "Pathfinder" (a literal translation) for its foreign release. It had limited theatrical release in the USA, and was nominated for the Best Foreign Movie Award at the Academy Awards (the oscars). The director and writer of "Veiviseren" Nils Gaup is co-credited for screenplay for the 2007 adaption, and confirms that he sold the story to Hollywood.
The theatrical release of Pathfinder was rated R by the MPAA while the DVD contains the longer unrated version. Unlike the mostly parallel released R-rated/unrated versions, the US-DVD contains both cuts so that the customer can choose between them. Also mentionable is the type of the changes that do in fact include more violent scenes that are predominantly made up of mediocre CGI-blood additions. A detailed comparison between both versions can be found here.
