Amelia

23 October 2009 7:48 AM, PDT | FilmExperience | See recent FilmExperience news »

The review... If you’re going to make a film about an aviatrix, it better soar. Mira Nair's Amelia seems to understand this with reverent voiceovers about flight sprinkled throughout. It even begins by prepping for liftoff as we see Amelia Earhart (Hilary Swank) waving from her plane’s wing, about to embark on a historic flight. Unfortunately it's the historic flight, as in her last. Argh! The movie has opted for that musty old biopic framing device: Start at the famous end, jump backwards in time to see how it all began, count down with us to the famous celebrity death! When a biopic begins this way, you have to worry that it has nothing fresh to say, being closer in spirit to a Wikipedia entry than a movie.

From that initial take off, complete with an overzealous score that assumes every moment's a climactic one, Amelia the »

Naomi Watts Named Most Bankable Actress

8 October 2009 12:15 AM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

And the best investment for your leading lady dollar is...Naomi Watts? Well, there's irony. Her best friend, Nicole Kidman, has been ranked by Forbes as the biggest loser in terms of box office returns, but Watts was recently crowned by the magazine as the actress who affords studios the greatest Roi.

For every dollar Watts is paid, her past three films have grossed $44. The rules are that the actresses must have starred in at least three movies in the past five years that opened in at least 500 theaters. Therefore, King Kong and Eastern Promises make up for The Painted Veil and The International, which weren't profitable at all.

Forbes says, not surprisingly, that Watts works cheap. Given her talent, I'd say that's true. She has one Oscar nomination already (21 Grams), and has been very good over the years, even when the movies are only so-so.

Most Profitable Star: Naomi Watts

7 October 2009 5:15 PM, PDT | Cinematical | See recent Cinematical news »

In this time of economic uncertainty and the potential evaporating of the old, reliable Hollywood star system, some math nerds may have saved the jobs of ten lucky actresses. Forbes Magazine has recently completed its annual list of female stars that provide the most bang for the buck. Their poll process is pretty complex. To qualify, actors must have appeared in at least three movies over the past five years that opened on 500 screens or more. Someone then adds up and averages the actors' salary on each film, each film's budget and each film's final gross. This year's winner: Naomi Watts, who earned $44 for each $1 she was paid. Despite starring in interesting movies like The Painted Veil, Funny Games and Eastern Promises, it looks as if Watts' place on the list was snagged mostly by King Kong, which earned $550 million worldwide.

Promo Posters for Stone Starring Robert De Niro and Edward Norton, and for The Mechanic Starring Jason Statham

27 September 2009 10:16 PM, PDT | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Collider reader “Max” has just sent along two promo posters for the upcoming films “Stone” starring Robert De Niro and Edward Norton and for “The Mechanic” starring Jason Statham.  Neither of these posters is official and you’ll probably never see them in your theater’s lobby.  These are made to influence an individual or a specific group rather than for public consumption.  But even though “Stone” is currently in post-production and “The Mechanic” is only in pre-production, hit the jump and consume away at these posters as well as brief plot synopses.

Dramatic heavyweights Robert De Niro and Edward Norton square off in this thriller from director John Curran (The Painted Veil). Stone finds a prisoner and a corrections officer battling over the man’s attempt at parole. The proceedings get ugly when the convict’s wife enters into the equation.

Earlier this year, she blogged about what she did all summer, which included listening to bands you may or may not know like Meese and White Rabbits, as well as some you might, like Muse, Animal Collective and Silversun Pickups.

IndieWire Precious takes the audience prize at Toronto. Could this season be another like the Slumdog last when everything was a foregone conclusion before the big night. If so, zzz and uh-oh. The buzz is so deafening now it might sadly become one of those movies where everyone's opinions are pre-formed and no one's can fully be trusted. Hate it when that happens (but I am totally dying to see the film. Very soon. very soon)

Trailer - De Niro, Norton, Jovovich in 'Stone'

16 September 2009 4:47 PM, PDT | GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news »

This trailer isn't Red Banded, but it should be for the dialogue. I mean, I don't care either way, but if you've got this one going at work, there are some objectionable words bound to come through your speakers. You've been warned.

The movie is Stone, starring Robert De Niro and Edward Norton. There are actually two previous collaborations here to take notice of. The first, of course, is De Niro and Norton in The Score and the second is Norton's recent work with Stone director John Curran in The Painted Veil. Bobby D plays a parole officer who is seduced into freeing a convicted arsonist (Norton) after having an affair with the prisoner's wife. That femme fatale role might open some new doors for Milla Jovovich, who looks appropriately dangerous here.

The movie doesn't open until sometime in 2010, but given the players involved, we thought you might have some interest in it. »

Jovovich Seduces De Niro in Stone Trailer. Plus, Ed Norton has a Funky Accent.

16 September 2009 10:42 AM, PDT | Beyond Hollywood | See recent Beyond Hollywood news »

Remember when Robert De Niro was Ed Norton? Well, now Ed Norton is Robert De Niro. Trust me, it makes perfect sense. Check out a promo trailer for Norton and De Niro’s new thriller “Stone”, set for a 2010 release from John Curran, the director of “The Painted Veil” and “We Don’t Live Here Anymore”. The film stars Norton as a bad, bad dude who tries to get De Niro to set him free. How does he do that, you ask? Well he’s got a pretty little wife played by Milla Jovovich who will do anything for him. This includes seducing De Niro’s parole officer and having lots of extra-marital sex. Hi-jinks, as they say, ensue. “Stone” is based on a play by Angus MacLachlan, who also wrote the movie. A word of warning: though whoever put the trailer up on YouTube doesn’t mark it as such, »

Stone Promo Trailer Featuring Edward Norton, Robert De Niro and Mila Jovovich

16 September 2009 4:00 AM, PDT | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

Millenium Films has released a marketing trailer for The Painted Veil and We Don't Live Here Anymore director John Curran's new film, a prison-set psychological crime thriller. Edward Norton stars as a convicted arsonist who looks to manipulate a parole officer (Robert De Niro) into a plan to secure his parole by placing his beautiful wife (Mila Jovovich) in the lawman's path. Originally written as a play, and adapted for the screen by Independent Spirit Award-nominated scribe Angus MacLachlan, a Winston-Salem screenwriter and playwright, best known for the 2005 film Junebug and the short film Tater Tomater. A bit of trivia: Zachary Quinto (Heroes, Star Trek) played the lead in the one and only Los Angeles table reading performance of the play in 2003. It's a rough cut trailer for exhibitors and marketing, but you'll get the idea. Watch it now embedded after the jump. Leave your thoughts in the comments below. »

"Wolverine 2", a sequel to "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", is being developed by 20th Century Fox and Seed Productions, but there is a chance that Liev Schreiber won't return to play Sabretooth. At "Taking Woodstock" junket, the Charles Townsend of "The Painted Veil" revealed that he is unsure whether he wants to reprise the role taking his age into consideration.

"I'm over 40 now, and do I really want to go through the physical stuff that it took to pull that off again? I'm not so sure," the life-partner of actress Naomi Watts explained as quoted by Cinema Blend. He added, "As an audience member, I'd be really interested to see how you'd go from the Liev Schreiber Victor Creed to the Tyler Mane Victor Creed [from X-Men]. So I'd like to see that."
