Exclusive: Robert Carlyle on 'Stargate Universe'

29 September 2009 9:40 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

Scottish-born character actor Robert Carlyle is one of the most versatile thespians you're likely to meet. He's played a cold-blooded killer on the classic UK crime drama Cracker (1990), a police officer in the BBC drama Hamish Macbeth (1995-97), a psychopath in Trainspotting (1996), a strip-teasing steelworker in The Full Monty (1997), an international terrorist who feels no pain in the Bond film The World is Not Enough (1999), and an intelligence operative in 24: Redemption (2008).

And those are just a few highlights.

Inspired to take up acting after reading Arthur Miller's "The Crucible", the graduate of Glasgow Arts Centre probably never imagined, however, that a journey that began in Scotland's largest city would one day take him to distant worlds aboard an ancient starship. Yet, it is aboard the starship Destiny in a distant corner of the universe where Carlyle now finds himself, as he dons the persona of Dr. Nicholas Rush in Stargate Universe, »

Tron Legacy: High-definition trailer plus latest on casting

3 August 2009 5:57 AM, PDT | The Geek Files | See recent The Geek Files news »

Back in 1982, Disney's virtual-reality sci-fi adventure Tron seemed like a cutting-edge concept.

It's still way ahead of what can be achieved with real-world digital technology so it's no wonder the movie retains its cult status.

At this year's San Diego Comic-Con, interest in the sequel - now revealed to be called Tron Legacy - looked just as strong.

As I already reported, there was no new footage to show this year (filming on Legacy has only just wrapped) but the preview from last year's Comic-Con was screened again, this time converted into high-definition 3D.

This new HD trailer with its thrilling light-cycle race is now available online and I've included it above. Never have neon motorbikes looked so good...

To put the franchise into context, the original came out two years after Pac-Man was released on the world's arcades and a year after the arrival of Donkey Kong, the game that introduced us to Mario. »

Is Cowboys For Christ Underway?

5 July 2009 4:14 PM, PDT | EmpireOnline | See recent EmpireOnline news »

Robin Hardy has been talking about Cowboys For Christ, a "spiritual sequel" to his 1973 pagan horror musical classic The Wicker Man, for years. He published the story as a novel in 2007, but hasn't directed a film since that mind-boggling 70s original. Until now.Funding fell through last year, but Shock Till You Drop are reporting that some shooting has now taken place in Texas, and is currently underway in Scotland. Christopher Lee is apparently on hand, along with Ed Speleers (Eragon) and Susie Amy (Lesbian Vampire Killers). Joan Collins was originally involved, but it's unclear whether or not she's still aboard.Plot-wise, we're very much back in Wicker Man territory, as two Texan Christians attempt to introduce God to a remote Scottish border town.  "There is a tradition among 10 or 15 little towns on the borders in Scotland," Hardy told The Guardian in 2007, "where once a year, usually around the summer solstice, »

Hardy's Cowboys for Christ Rides On!

3 July 2009 | shocktillyoudrop.com | See recent shocktillyoudrop news »

It's been over a year since we've heard anything about Cowboys for Christ . Reports in early 2008 said director Robin Hardy's "companion piece" to his 1973 chiller The Wicker Man had lost its funding shortly before shooting was to begin in Scotland with Christopher Lee and Joan Collins leading the cast. Things are picking back up for Hardy. Sources tell us a bit of shooting has already taken place in Texas and Hardy is currently in production in Scotland! Now, according to the IMDb, the film still stars Lee, as Sir Lachlan Morrison, and includes Ed Speleers ( Eragon ), Susie Amy ( Lesbian Vampire Killers ), Henry Garrett, Keith Warwick and Morgan James. James and Speleers play Beth and Steve, respectively, Texas Christians on a mission to spread the word of the... »

'Tron 2.0' Comes With a $300M Price Tag?

10 April 2009 7:35 AM, PDT | CinemaSpy | See recent CinemaSpy news »

A report in the Vancouver Sun is suggesting that Tron 2.0, which has just begun production here in Vancouver, is budgeted at $300M dollars! That's a whopping sum if one stops to consider British Columbia's film and labor tax credits...and a 20% difference between the Us and Cdn dollar. Even if that figure is in adjusted Cdn dollars, it's still a walloping sum for such a niche sci-fi film; a sequel to boot.

If true, that would tie the new Tron movie with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End as the most expensive movie every made.

We're not quite sure what's going on here, or where all that money will go (we hear craft services in town are charging more these days, but c'mon...), but with only three producers officially attached, it's not as though the film is above-the-line top heavy.

Here's the full report...

Inside The Business: Temp Scores (Part 1)

25 March 2009 6:49 AM, PDT | Daily Film Music Blog | See recent Daily Film Music Blog news »

The temporary score (a collection of pre-existing music utilized during the editing) is a controversial creative aid which was first utalized by the editors to keep some rhythm to their works. Today the job of producing and editing temporary track is a whole job onto itself. In the following article you'll hear a lot more about this job from two of Hollywood's top temp editors: Scott Stambler is a frequent collaborator of Rob Reiner and served as a temp editor on such features as Forrest Gump, The Kingdom and most recently on Tropic Thunder. Mark "Vordo" Wlodarkiewicz does a variety of music editing jobs which naturally includes temp editing: his most recent credits include Eragon, The Simpsons Movie and yes, he worked on Tropic Thunder as well.

First the bad news: many composers criticize the temp track as a way to stop creativity. True, many directors and producers ofter force »

TV Review: Ambitious ‘Kings’ With Ian McShane Unlike Anything Else on Network TV

13 March 2009 1:00 PM, PDT | HollywoodChicago.com | See recent HollywoodChicago.com news »

Television Rating: 3.5/5.0 Chicago – You won’t see many shows much more ambitious than NBC’s “Kings”. The multi-character drama borrows from the story of King David to create a tapestry piece about power, corruption, and war. It’s dense, layered, complex storytelling that you rarely see on network television. In other words, I don’t think it’s going to be on very long.

“We give up what we want when we want power.” - King Silas Benjamin (Ian McShane, “Deadwood”)

In the two-hour premiere of “Kings,” directed by “I Am Legend“‘s Francis Lawrence (as are all of the first four hours) and created by “Heroes”’ Michael Green, we meet the popular King of Gilboa, Silas Benjamin, played with driven perfection by the great Ian McShane. His people have recently emerged stronger from a horrible war and the King lives with his Queen Rose (Susanna Thompson of “Once and »

Eragon Movie Review

24 February 2009 1:52 PM, PST | ScreenStar | See recent ScreenStar news »

Eragon is based off the bestselling book by Christopher Paolini. Fans of the book series will notice that the story in the movie is only very loosely based off the books, but to someone new to the story, it will be an epic movie that is very enjoyable. The movie was released in 2006, making $249 million worldwide in the box offices. It tells the story of a young farm boy by the name of Eragon. He finds a mysterious stone in the mountains and later learns that it is a dragon's egg. After the murder of his uncle, he sets out with the village storyteller, Brom. They plan to reach the Varden, where Eragon can join the freedom fighters and one day take down the evil King Galbatorix. Eragon was filmed in Hungry and Slovakia, home to the stunning views shown on Eragon's travels. The critical response was mixed. Some »

Ang Lee Helming Adaptation of Yann Martel's Life of Pi

18 February 2009 2:12 AM, PST | firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news »

Not to be confused with Monty Python's Life of Brian, Yann Martel's novel "Life of Pi" is set to be adapted by Taiwanese director Ang Lee. The story follows an Indian boy named Piscine "Pi" Molitor Pate who is the lone survivor of a sunken freighter that winds up sharing a lifeboat with a hyena, an injured zebra, an orangutan and a hungry Bengal tiger. So it's kind of like The Jungle Book and Noah's Ark combined, or at least that's my initial perception. The project is being developed at Fox 2000 and while there are older scripts around, including one by M. Night Shyamalan, Lee will find and hire a new writer to adapt. Fox producer Gil Netter, who has a very sketchy track record with films like Phone Booth, Flicka, Eragon, and Marley & Me to his name, is producing. Ang Lee is currently finishing his Taking Woodstock film, »

Tron Lead Chosen

7 January 2009 11:00 PM, PST | toxicshock.tv | See recent toxicshock news »

Disney has picked up-and-coming actor Garrett Hedlund to star in the Joseph Kosinksi-directed “Tron,” the sequel to the 1982 Disney cult science fiction classic. Hedlund has appeared in “Troy,” “Friday Night Lights,” “Four Brothers,” “Eragon,” and “Georgia Rule.” Hedlund will play the lead, who finds himself pulled into the world of a computer and retracing the steps of Kevin Flynn from the first film, played by Jeff Bridges, who is reprising the role of Flynn. Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett have also been cast in the project, which was known as both “Tron 2″ and “Tr2n” before its latest naming. “Tron”, released in 1982, is a sci-fi film by Disney, [...] »

Lead Actor Cast in Tron 2.0

7 January 2009 4:44 PM, PST | newsinfilm.com | See recent newsinfilm news »

Garrett Hedlund has been cast as the lead actor in the Tron sequel, Tron 2.0.  (I’ve also seen it called simply Tron, which is confusing, and Tr2n, which I think they’ve thankfully discarded.)

The story details are still very secretive, so we don’t even know the name of the character.  All Disney was willing to share is Hedlund plays a man pulled into the computer world and retraces the steps of the original main character, Kevin FlynnJeff Bridges played Flynn in the 1982 science fiction classic and will return as him in some capacity for the sequel.

If you don’t know who Hedlund is, don’t worry.  You’re like most everyone else.  He’s only been in movies since 2004, when he had a small villain part in his debut, Troy, a supporting role in Eragon, was one of the football players in Friday Night Lights, »

‘Tr2n’ Gains Lead Actor, Loses Idiotic Numeral

7 January 2009 4:44 PM, PST | MovieBlog.Ugo.com | See recent Ugo MovieBlog news »

This just in.  The male lead in Tron will be Garrett Hedlund.  Wait, what?  Didn’t we just report that both Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner will be back reprising their roles of Flynn (and possibly Clu) and Alan One/Tron?  And that the newfangled technology from Benjamin Button would help that become a reality? Yes we did, but that never meant that they would be the lead of the film.  Hell, someone has got to make out with Olivia Wilde and neither of those dudes is gonna get that lucky. The word on the street today is that Garrett Hedlund, from Friday Night Lights, Georgia Rule, Eragon and Troy (he played Patroclus, Brad Pitt’s boy-crush) will get sucked into the McP to fight off angry computer matrices with frisbees (I so effing love Tron!) We’re hardly die hard Garret Hedlund fans (we admit, we had to look »

‘Tron 2′ Gets Its Lead

7 January 2009 8:08 AM, PST | ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news »

The sequel to the classic 1980s film Tron, now going by the same name (but we’ll keep referring to it as Tron 2), is a highly anticipated one and the news being released of both original stars Jeff Bridges and Bruce Boxleitner coming back as well as the fact they’re “staying true to the original” makes me very excited about it.

Well it seems that the project is zooming along at light-cycle speed as Disney has announced they’ve found their leading man. He is Garrett Hedlund, who you may recognize from such films as Four Brothers (he was the youngest one), Friday Night Lights, Georgia Rule, Death Sentence (he was bad-ass in that) and Eragon.

He reportedly beat out Ryan Gosling, upcoming Star Trek star Chris Pine and Michael Stahl-David (Cloverfield) for the role.

Not much is being released by Disney about the film’s plot details, »

"Tron 2" Casts Leading Man: Fanboys Shrug

Disney has taken a major step forward with the casting of its lead for the upcoming sci-fi adventure movie, Tron 2, with the tapping of Friday Night Light's co-star, Garrett Hedlund.

Hedlund who has been flying under the audience radar for most of his young career, has made a name for himself with supporting performances in Troy, Eragon and Georgia Rule. With his casting as the lead in the sequel to one of the most popular and influential sci-fi movies in the genre, Tron, Hedlund will soon become a cover boy for Ok!, People, Tiger Beat and Foaming Teen Mouth Breather magazine. »
