In Wonderful World, which premiered at the 2009 Tribeca Film Festival, Matthew Broderick stars as Ben Singer, a misanthropic pot-smoking single dad whose only friend is his Senegalese roommate Ibu, played by Michael K. Williams (The Wire, The Road). When Ibu falls ill, his beautiful sister Khadi (Sanaa Lathan) comes to visit and Ben finds his worldview slowly shifting. Tribeca sat down with Wonderful World writer and director Josh Goldin recently, where he talked about working with his longtime friend Broderick, chipping away at negativity, and his upcoming project with Jay Baruchel. Goldin's unnamed movie, which stars Baruchel as a stand-up comic in love, will be produced by Albert Berger and Ron Yerxa (Little Miss Sunshine, Little Children, Hamlet 2) and Danielle Renfrew (Waitress). Goldin wrote the script and will also direct. Tribeca Film: You wrote on the Huffington Post that the character of Ben is a combination of »

A film as incredible as the original Toy Story was lucky enough to be followed up with a sequel that fired on all cylinders and stood up to Pixar’s original work. I would have never expected a Toy Story 3, but I’m glad one is headed our way, and relatively soon: the film will be released on June 18, 2010.
The whole cast of the original film is returning to Imax 3D theaters, directed by Lee Unkrich and written by Little Miss Sunshine scribe Michael Arndt. On June 30, the third film in the Twilight saga will be released in Imax, and I’m counting on all of you to make sure that Toy Story 3 dominates it in box office totals.
I suppose this isn’t much in the way of news, only a brief reflection on how lucky we are as audiences: Pixar, a company of wonderful storytellers, has »

I wish I had enough sway in Hollywood that studios would seek out script rights just so that I could be put in the film. That’s what The Office star Steve Carell’s life is like, living the new American dream.
Warner Bros. has just picked up an untitled script by Cars writer Dan Fogelman for $2-2.5 million dollars, in what is being called the biggest spec script sale of the year. Fogelman has just hit the jackpot, it seems.
According to Variety, the film will have “a tone comparable to Love Actually. Carell will play a father whose life unravels while he deals with a marital crisis and tries to manage his relationship with his children.” I’m glad to see they’re taking the Little Miss Sunshine semi-serious route instead of goofy stuff that tempts talented actors like Carell away from their successful careers.

The trailer for Date Night, starring Tina Fey and Steve Carell, was tragically unfunny. You’d think the pairing of these two television comedy giants (and a slew of other talented people) might find a way to delight an audience, but things aren’t looking good for the pair’s collaboration.
Not to worry, Fey and Carell may be working together again soon, giving everyone a second chance at comedy. The duo is loosely attached to Mail Order Groom, according to Pajiba (later ripped off by the Hollywood Reporter).
The high concept comedy is about a woman who is desperate to find love and winds up ordering an Eastern European husband. The story is based on an idea by Jeff Richmond, Fey’s husband. Yes, apparently she’s already married in real life. Sorry to let down “30 Rock” fans who thought they had a chance with the funny lady who »

Produced largely by the same team as the delightful Little Miss Sunshine, this is never as successful or as funny as that surprise hit, but does have the performances of Amy Adams and Emily Blunt to commend it. Not only are these strong and empathetic, but they are playing very much against type: the usually imperious Blunt is the family screw-up, while Adams, sunny, ever-optimistic star of Junebug, is the sensible sister, putting together a new family business cleaning up crime scenes. Director Christine Jeffs, best known for Sylvia, juggles the dark humour and wistfulness with skill at times, but the ending is jarringly unconvincing.

Last year four of the five SAG-nominated ensembles appeared in films that went on to earn best picture Oscar nominations -- SAG contender "Doubt" was replaced by "The Reader" -- and "Slumdog Millionaire" won both prizes. Two years ago, only one SAG ensemble nominee -- "No Country for Old Men" -- made it into the best-picture race, although that film won both awards. Three years ago it was three of five, with "Little Miss Sunshine" taking the SAG prize but losing the top Oscar to "The Departed." Last year, 18 of the 19 SAG acting nominees repeated at the Oscars. Looking back over the past decade, no awards show gained more credibility in this period than...the Oscars? Yes, it's true. The venerable organization expanded its membership base, got younger (relatively) and returned to embracing films that would have been unthinkable even ten years prior such as "Brokeback Mountain," "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," "Little Miss Sunshine," "Juno" and "Slumdog Millionaire." Unfortunately, even a entity of 6,000 members has its share of foibles and disappointing decisions. In fact, when cinema historians judges the Academy's worst Best Picture choices they may surprised to discover two were made since the turn of the century. Can »

Veteran actor Alan Arkin's latest movie features his most difficult scene - with a naked Blake Lively.
The Gossip Girl star had to strip for a scene in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee, in which she lies naked on top of the Little Miss Sunshine actor - and the 75 year old admits he was mortified throughout the shoot.
He explains, "I spent the whole day apologising to her. That was a tough day. You're thinking about being alone in a room with Blake Lively with no clothes on; I was there with 50 people and it was freezing and I had lines I had to say.
"In making 45 movies, it's only been an issue three times for me. It's not the kind of parts I get. It's always been uncomfortable for me and not something I really look forward to."
But the actress insists she preferred to get naked for Arkin over younger hunks: "I think being with a young dude would've been more awkward. I'd be thinking, 'Does he think I look cute?' I don't want that.
"I didn't have to worry about that with Alan because he was so uncomfortable and I was so uncomfortable, so I didn't have to worry about anyone being creepy. It was very easy." »
